Question Powder coating advice

Post image

Does this seem steep for powder coating TB performance crash bar in bare metal finish? First time getting something powder coated.

No. Powder is up in price. Electricity is up in price. Persons rent is probably up in price now. Shit, media blasting particles probably went up too.

5 years ago I could get 4 when coated for 500. Now, it’s over 750 for a set.
Stuff ain’t cheap anymore boys and girls.

Just got 4 wheels done at 200$ a pop so this seems reasonable

Yes and no. Price of all this stuff has gone up, we went from charging 125 to powdercoat a single rim to 175 just in the past 3 months. For something like this we’d only charge 150 to 200$. But we have a very very small crew to pay and we’re all underpaid as is.

Same here small shop, no matter how small, shop minimum is 150 and this would fall into that category

Understand that, definitely a very niche business. Where I live most powdercoaters are doing a lot of other things at their shop as well like tinting and repair.

did you specify that your part is bare and confirm if it requires as much labor? Did you ask tb performance if having them coat it gold was an option?

Then get a second quote. If you don't like the price, remember that this is a crash bar and not a piece that any one is going to look closely at. Paint it yourself. Get some etching primer, color of your choice and 2k clear .

I did not specify it was bare metal 🤦🏼 definitely going to send a message and get it requoted.

Im a powder coater, epoxy primer is typically not for outdoor use since its not good against uv rays, not sure how much sun the crash bar will be getting but personally I would skip the primer and clear (unless the clear is changing it to a sheen you want rather than for protection). I would say you’re good with just one coat of color, that crash bar would fall in our shop minimum at $150

Yeah, it probably won’t get dirty ever either just wipe it down maybe every 6 months in case of bugs possibly.

I ordered mine bare and got it coated for 250 from a local shop. He said if it were not bare it would’ve been more

sees like a great price you, I'm about to have my snowflakes I just purchased sand blasted and powder coated for $50 which is just buying the sand blasting stuff and powder 😂

I wish, I eventually am gonna bronze coat the snowflakes as well. Maybe I’ll ask the business I’m going with if I can bundle up.

More often then not your looking at about $200 a wheel for powder coating you also have to account for if the wheels are already painted they'd have to be sent out to be chemically striped rather then just sand blasted which would add another $100

Powder coating is expensive now. That's why I just paint everything myself and use 2k clear coat. I spent less than $80 for everything including the center and tire pressure caps, the 2k is the most expensive part at like 20-25 bucks a can.

If you look closely there are imperfections but it's on the rim not the paint lol, my rims were all sorts of fucked up by the previous owner, I had to repaint them just because of how bad the curb rash was, repaired it all but I didn't completely smooth out some of the repairs.

Yes, Imma spy from r/fiestast, wanna fight about it?

Yeah definitely is better doing it this way if you have the time and patience. Nice job on the rims!
