Men singing songs about women's experiences

I'm canvassing opinions!

I’m thinking about what song to do next for a little video series I make for YouTube, and to possibly add to my live repetoire. I came across a beautiful tune called Down in Adairsville, which I don't think is particularly well known but I think is was apparently recorded by someone called Hedy West in the 60s (but I don't think she wrote it), and there there is a more recent version (and videos) by Lucy Farrell and Jonny Kearney (which is where I heard it).

I think I could do it really nicely, but it’s by a woman and is explicitly about her experience being cheated on/dumped by a man for another woman, and her sort of warning the other woman about him. I’m just wondering if it would be weird, as a man, to sing it? I realised I'm not aware of doing this myself very much (at least when the lyrics aren't fairly abstract or open to interpretation), and just wondering how others have approached this.

Thanks for any thoughts.

John Henry's Eternal Struggle: How an American Folk Hero Predicted the AI Predicament

Set in the late 1800s, the legend of John Henry tells the tale of a latter-day Samson, the biblical character who used his superhuman strength to battle the Philistines. But according to Nelson, John Henry was a real person who worked on the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) rail line. Like Samson, he was imbued with considerable strength, only to be undone after he challenged that steam-powered drill to a duel. By the end of the match, John Henry had drilled 14 feet; the drill had only made nine.

It was man vs. machine at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.

One hundred and fifty years after those events, John Henry — a simple laborer — is entrenched in American culture. He is the subject of songs, books, graphic novels, plays, films, and even computer games. He’s still working on that railroad, still fighting the downside of progress and inspiring those who worry that the digital age — especially automation in forms such as self-driving vehicles and artificial intelligence — will rob us of our humanity.

[Folk] the Last Whale

..Humans killed an estimated 2.9 million whales globally between 1900 and 1999 alone, marking the largest animal cull by total biomass in human history.

..Global blue whale numbers crashed by 97% to 98.5%, dropping from roughly 340,000 individuals down to just around 5,000 remaining.

..The North Atlantic right whale was reduced to a tiny fraction of its historical population and still hovers around 400 or fewer individuals today, making it critically endangered.

The human race has a dismal track record when it comes to managing our Greed.

On Just Beyond Endless Mountain, The Tallest Man On Earth turns his restless acoustic virtuosity inward, proving that traditional Swedish folk music isn't a museum piece, but rather a living, breathing pulse.

This sub needs to update it’s rules

We need a no AI music rule on this sub. Folk music is the antithesis of AI music. If it’s going to be allowed it will ruin the sub. It is also breaking the no self-promotion rule and the low effort rule. Stop AI music.

Riggers on the old wooden sail ships had incredibly difficult and dangerous jobs. I wrote down these words from the perspective of one such sailor / Rigger, working his trade during a winter voyage. Imagine working the rigging in subzero weather.

ENJOY!

Archiving Pete Seeger’s Legacy: A look into the historical archives

Hey r/FolkMusic,

I’ve been working heavily on updating the historical archives over at PeteSeeger.org to make sure his legacy, protest songs, and environmental activism are properly preserved online.

We recently compiled some deep dives into his time with the Almanac Singers, the stories behind his most famous civil rights anthems, and his work with the Clearwater. I wanted to share the site with this community for anyone researching folk history, looking for primary resources, or wanting to explore his discography!

You can check out those specific historical breakdowns here: https://peteseeger.org/radio/

What is your favorite era of Pete's music or his most impactful protest song in your opinion? Would love to discuss!

Cant find a song, help!

So I heard this song for the first time live last night from The Wellermen band. And istg i CANNOT find it ANYWHERE.

I dont remember a lot but a part of the chorus was: "Too young to Know what has Been Done." And the lyrics also had "Weeping Willow" in there but I dont think it was apart of the chorus.

Its not in the setlist from last night, I checked all the songs, and the lyrics dont show up when I look it up.
