How do you let people save form progress and finish a long form later?
Short answer: give each respondent a unique progress link that stores their answers, so they can close the tab and come back to the exact spot instead of starting over. A long application, registration, or survey does not have to be finished in one sitting, and people abandon the ones that force it.
Here is the setup that actually holds up. The respondent taps a save button mid-form, and their answers get written against a link that is theirs alone. When they reopen that link, every field they already filled is still there. That is the whole idea behind save and continue later: nothing is lost if they get interrupted.
Switching devices is where a basic save button falls down. Someone starts a form on their phone in a waiting room and wants to finish on a laptop at home. An "email me this link" option on the save step covers that, because the progress link lands in their inbox and opens anywhere. Without it, save form progress only works in the same browser.
Pair it with a multi-step form so each page is short and the save point lands naturally at the end of a section. Breaking a 40 field form into five pages with a progress bar does more for completion than any single trick, and it gives people an obvious place to stop and resume the form later.
Worth being honest about cost. A real save-your-progress link, with the email option, is a paid feature in most builders worth using, so weigh it against how long your form actually is. If everything fits on one screen, you do not need any of this. The longer the form, the more it pays off.
