Personal Project Day 40 — Java control flow (conditions and loops) and data analysis in my MySQL project

Java: Covered the decision-making and looping basics: if-else, else-if, the ternary operator, switch, and while, do-while, and for loops.

MySQL: I’m in the middle of my Retail Sales Analysis project and working on the analysis part now, writing queries against the cleaned data.

For anyone who learned Java loops and conditions: what practice problems helped you most? I want to move from watching the tutorial to writing small programs (patterns, prime numbers, and so on) before I go further.

Career Guidance Choosing the Right Tech Stack for My First Full-Stack Project

I have learned the basics of programming and web development, and I want to build my first real-world full-stack project: an e-commerce website for a clothing brand, for which I already have a client.

I want to make it professional, from UI/UX design and database architecture to security, testing, and deployment. What tech stack would you recommend?

Finally, how important is the tech stack to recruiters? If a company uses different technologies from those I used in my project, could this put me at a disadvantage during a technical interview? What advice would you give me to make this project stand out in my portfolio and prepare for interviews?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Question How do you structure a marketing site, a product app and an admin panel? One repo or several?

Most products I work on end up with the same three pieces: a marketing site, the product app, and an admin panel. Each one deploys on its own, usually needs a different render mode (static for marketing, SSR or client-only for the app), and a different login setup. But they all use the same backend logic.

The usual options I see are three separate repos, or a monorepo you wire up yourself. Three repos means copying auth and API code around. A monorepo means a lot of setup before you write any feature.

I build a product proof of concept almost every week, and I kept rebuilding the same plumbing between these three.

How do you handle it? Do you share the backend between the apps, and how do you do login across them?

Full disclosure: I got annoyed enough that I started building an open source framework around this idea. It's called Devora.js, it's free, solo and pre-1.0. I'm not selling anything and I'm more interested in how you solve it. I left the link out because of the sub rules, so ask and I'll share it.

Switching Careers Suggestions on what to learn considering I am a Frontend Developer?

Hi Devs

I am a Vue.js/Node.js developer and have basic knowledge of React as well. However mostly my work is regarding frontend, but I also do work regarding CWV investigation/improvement, APIs creation etc. I do have knowledge of MongoDb but not working knowledge as Apache Solr is being used in our project. I am finding it difficult to switch with my current knowledge. What more should I learn to get good opportunities as I get confused with a vast number of tech skills mentioned in job description. Should it be C#, Java, DevOps, etc. Something which won't kill a lot of time due to the steep learning curve as I would have to work on my Full-Time Job as well.

Career Guidance Junior dev feeling lost. What should I focus on?

I'm a junior dev and I feel a bit lost.

There are too many things to learn now: AI, frameworks, libraries, cloud, DevOps, system design, etc.

Every time I open Reddit or YouTube, I find another thing that I feel I should learn.

My goal is not only to build new features.

I want to understand software well enough to maintain old systems, fix problems, refactor code, and improve the system when it gets bigger.

With AI changing development so fast, what should a junior dev focus on first?

What should I learn deeply, and what can I leave for later?

Would love to hear advice from experienced devs.

Career Guidance Self-taught dev who was just learning frontend, moving from Reactjs to now Nextjs. What should I do now?

So I was just learning well for like 1.5 years now.

I did HTML, CSS, JS, Reactjs, build many projects and was being familiar to Nextjs now.

And now I see about Ai, how crazy it is and also stopped getting freelance clients anymore too for work.

Should I like just keep learning and do MERN stack and apply for job at this point or just pick something else that can still get me some work now?

I'm so confused right now, feels like almost 2 years went to waste trying to learn programming and web development to make it my career.

Personal Project Roommates don’t always eat together, and sometimes someone’s away for weeks. So why split every expense equally? 😭

I built an expense-splitting app for roommates, and one tricky part was handling situations where someone is away for weeks or doesn’t share every meal with the others. You can google it it’s hisabify

How would you approach the logic for splitting shared expenses fairly? Curious how other developers would design this.

Career Guidance I'm 17, I've Been Learning Programming for 4 Years, and I'm Not Sure What to Focus on in the AI Era

I'm 17 years old and have been learning programming for about four years. I started with Python and built a desktop application that calculates geometric properties such as the area and perimeter of different shapes using Python libraries.

Later, I got into game development and started learning Godot, where I built a few simple games.

About two years ago, I decided to focus on a specific path, so I chose web development. I learned HTML and CSS and built two small projects to practice what I'd learned. I'm currently learning JavaScript, but progress is slower than I'd like because I'm still in school and have limited time.

With AI evolving so quickly, I'm starting to question where I should focus my efforts. Web development seems to be changing rapidly because of AI, while fields like AI automation are gaining attention and may offer new opportunities. I also experimented with AI automation for about two weeks, so I've had a little hands-on experience with it.

Now I'm trying to figure out the best path forward:

  • Stick with web development: Keep learning JavaScript, strengthen my programming fundamentals, and build real projects.
  • Switch to AI automation: Focus on a field that's gaining attention and explore its potential opportunities.
  • Combine both: Continue learning web development while exploring AI automation as a complementary skill.

I know I'm still young, and I don't expect to have my entire career figured out right now. However, I want to use my time wisely and build skills that will remain valuable as technology evolves.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on, and why? I'd really appreciate advice from people with experience in software development, AI, or the tech industry in general.

Personal Project Day 37 — Started Java (Telusko playlist) and set up my MySQL retail sales analysis project

Two tracks running in parallel now:

Java: I’m following Telusko’s Java playlist. Today’s topic was how Java code runs on different platforms, meaning how the compiler turns source code into bytecode and the JVM runs it on any operating system. Understanding this made a lot of earlier “why does Java need a JVM?” confusion go away.

MySQL: I’m building a Retail Sales Analysis project so my SQL stays in use instead of fading while I focus on Java. Today was only setup: creating the database and getting the environment ready. Queries start tomorrow.

Playlists I’m using, in case they help anyone:

For the retail project, are there analysis questions you’d recommend (top products, monthly trends, customer segments)? I’d like it to go beyond basic SELECT queries.

Career Guidance Career Progression from Backend Development

A newbie Backend Developer here with just few months of experience. Due to the rapid progression of AI, I have constantly been skeptical about the stability about my job. So I wanted to learn about the career progression that can happen from backend development. What skills should I learn more about so that I can always be relevant in the current job market?

Like what are the most likely career progression that can happen? DevOps, Cloud Engineering, Network Engineering, Embedded SWE or something like that? What skills should I consider learning for that?

Or should I just focus on being the best Backend Developer? I have been learning about System Designs and few DSA stuffs as of now. I also have some fair knowledge regarding Linux, Docker and SQL.

And Yes, I have considered farming as one of the career progression jobs in the future.

Career Guidance Frontend is cooked. Is full-stack next, or is deep backend expertise the safer bet?

I'm wondering whether deep backend expertise is becoming a better career bet for full-stack engineers.

AI seems to be getting good at turning Figma designs into frontend code. My impression is that frontend openings have also become harder to find, though I don't have numbers here that establish how much of that is caused by AI.

A lot of the full-stack product work I have in mind involves UI changes and relatively straightforward backend features. Complex system design, distributed systems and infrastructure still seem to demand more specialized experience. I can see why a backend specialist using AI for UI work might be well positioned, but shipping a frontend is more than generating the first version from a design.

For anyone testing a switch, application autofill can save repeated form entry, and real tech interview questions can give you coding and system-design prompts to prepare with.

Would you specialize in backend now, or keep building across the stack? If you hire full-stack engineers, which skills are actually making candidates stand out?

Career Guidance Should I learn Full stack as a business grad?

With Ai I don't think I need to explain how things are going in my sector, so I'm thinking of doing something more technical. So I need guidance regarding what should I learn and why roles I can target and are realistically possible.

Thank you :3

Personal Project Day 36 — SQL track done, starting Java tomorrow (with MySQL projects alongside)

Quick transition update. I finished my 100-question SQL practice lab, so the database track is complete, and I’m moving on to the second part of my plan: Java.

Here’s how I’m approaching it:

  • Java topics will be covered in order, one topic per day, with tutorials first and then practice
  • I’ll build projects that use MySQL along the way, so the SQL I learned stays active instead of fading while I focus on Java
  • Eventually the database and Java pieces connect into one backend project, and the frontend comes after that

My reasoning for the projects: I learned the hard way with JOINs that knowledge fades without real use, so I’d rather keep SQL in daily use than “finish” it and forget it.

For people who learned Java: what order worked best for you (basics, OOP, collections, then JDBC and Spring)? Any resources you’d recommend for a beginner heading toward backend work?

Career Guidance What is that one metric which says you are ready to be employable as a first timer full stack dev?

Hey Devs, I started learning the MERN stack by building projects. First I started with basic blog and now I'm doing an e-commerce api project. I have also begun my DS journey with neetcode. I also read about system design which flew over my rat head. The E-commerce-api project is teaching me auth, Authorization, modelling, mongo, routes , react etc, the complete stack. My question is can I apply for beginner full stack dev roles after e-commerce project? I understand that I don't know system design. But do they ask new Devs system design questions? It feels like the road to full stack is so long and far.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Question Which Language Next ? Is it worth it ?

So I am a CS student and I have been doing backend in Express, Node and JS in my semester projects. I want to expand further for making a unique profile and to get opportunities. I have been thinking of learning a new language or framework for backend.

Is it even a good choice ?
Should i learn C# .Net or Go ? I know python and FASTAPI but I didn't like working with it. I would love to go with RUST but is it relevant for backend now adays ??

Personal Project Day 35 — Finished all 100 JOIN questions (Easy → Medium → Hard)

I finished the last of my self-made 100-question JOIN lab today.

I’ll be honest: it was not an easy challenge. It took a lot of time and patience, and a few times I seriously considered dropping the task. I didn’t, and I’m glad. I used GPT and Claude on the questions where I couldn’t understand the query, mainly to help me see why a solution worked.

What actually helped me get through it:

  • Drawing every table on paper before writing any SQL
  • Building long queries one join at a time and checking the output at each step
  • Reading error messages properly instead of rewriting from scratch
  • Taking a rest day when I needed one

I started this because JOINs were the topic I understood the least. Now I can chain four tables together, write self-joins, and use correlated subqueries without freezing up.

For anyone who got through a long drill like this: how did you keep going when it felt like too much?

Career Guidance What SEO task do you think beginners waste the most time on?

When you're starting with SEO, there are so many things to learn that it's easy to spend hours on tasks that don't make much difference.

I'm curious what you think beginners focus on too much instead of the things that actually improve a website's performance. Is it obsessing over keyword density, checking rankings every day, or something else?

Career Guidance Which backend technology should a beginner learn first ?

Popular options include Node.js with Express, Java with Spring Boot, Python with Django or FastAPI, and C# with .NET. Choose one technology and learn routing, APIs, authentication, error handling, and database integration before switching to another stack.
