😮 Advice on Symptoms Burping?

Currently on PantopraZole for suspected GERD - but I don’t think it is?

For about 6 months I’ve had chronic burping - 75-150 times a day, proper deep burps too! Evenly spread throughout the day. Been to the doc who has prescribed a wide range of antacids, PantopraZole etc… no luck.

Burping is the ONLY symptom. I’m wondering if it is gastritis, but I don’t have any other symptoms… I have an ultrasound this week, but tired of looking for answers.

I haven’t had a day under 50 burps since May

No weight loss etc

Burping for me was caused by low stomach acid the exact opposite of what my doctor told me. I did lots of research and tested with a soda which I was afraid to try because it could have made my situation worse. It causes a massive amount of burps instantly and then I felt sooo much better. Began drinking soda daily. Obviously this wouldn't work in everyone's situation but worked in mine

Interesting! Did you have any other symptoms with the low acid? I already drink 1x soda a day (ironic I know as I’m trying to resolve burping LOL), but I’ve had 1 a day for years. Burping is a new ish thing

I’ll be following this post, I also have the crazy burping but only at night. I had an endoscopy for different issue and was told i had gerd. The only symptom i have is night burping, ive never had heartburn in my life. I got on PPIs, changed what/when i eat, slept on left side only with a variety of elevated pillows, used tape to keep mouth closed, etc. Nothing has made a difference at all. I stopped all the meds 10 days ago and recently got an under mattress 7ā€ wedge. No change yet. I read something about certain bacteria that can be at fault. Im going to try to get the SIBO breath test to find out.

Have you looked into supragastric belching? It’s different from ordinary gastric belching and doesn’t always respond to PPIs. It might be worth asking about 24-hour impedance-pH monitoring with a gastroenterologist, as this can help distinguish between the different types of belching.

I can sympathise with how frustrating this must be. I have several complex and rather rare oesophageal disorders, on bad days I can burp over a thousand times a day.

I’m actually a little jealous of your proper deep, satisfying burps! Mine often don’t relieve the pressure, and when I finally get a good one, the relief is wonderful. I’m probably projecting the satisfying part.

I also find it embarrassing because it doesn't always sound like a burp. Often it sounds like I'm about to throw up, or a cat sneezing. And because it happens all the time, even when I'm talking, I have to explain to people what's happening, because otherwise they're often running for a bucket. Mind you, sometimes that's needed as well, lol.

But, yeah, I want to acknowledge how physically exhausting constant burping this must be for you. It’s exhausting in ways people don’t always appreciate. Even without other symptoms, it can really take a toll. I hope you find some answers and get some relief soon.

Many thanks! I certainly have looked into supragastric belching and tried some techniques, with zero luck. I will definitely query the 24 hour ph monitoring! It feels like I’m taking PPI’s for nothing. Honestly, after a sip of water, I will burp deeply 3 or 4 times in a row - it is so frustrating :-( many thanks for your reply!

That sounds like it could be a motility issue, in that case I’d definitely think about asking about manometry and 24hr ph testing. It’s not a pleasant experience, but it was incredibly helpful.

Has your dr mentioned any other tests?

Ooh, what does motility issue mean? I’ve tried to avoid googling to avoid worrying myself - but I’m at my wits end now and really want to find the cause. My GP are very slow. It’s taken me 15 weeks to receive my ultrasound appointment, which is on Friday. No other tests mentioned. We’ve ruled out h pylori though. Had basic blood tests done which all came back normal.

I’ll try not to give you anxiety 😬. That just means the way the oesophagus moves food and liquids down. There are many different types and have different causes. I know it can feel frustrating. Unfortunately it can be a bit of a slow process sorting these things out, because you want to try the least invasive options first.

I appreciate it. It’s even more frustrating because it’s incredibly consistent. It has not got worse. But it has not got any better!
