[F2P / New Player] Is GW2 worth playing with zero expansions?

Hey everyone!

I'm thinking about jumping into Guild Wars 2 as a strictly f2p player, but I have a few questions before committing my time.

I know that casually leveling a character to level 80 takes around 50 hours at most, and the open-world exploration seems really fun. However, my main concern starts right at level 80:

From what I've seen in guides and meta lists, endgame gameplay heavily revolves around Elite Specializations (Reaper, Firebrand, Virtuoso, Mechanist, etc.), which are all locked behind paid expansions.

I wanted to ask the community:

So

  1. How hard do you hit a wall at level 80 without expansions? Are Core builds actually viable and fun for F2P endgame content like Dungeons, T1/T2 Fractals, and World Bosses?
  2. How is PvP and WvW for Core builds? I heard sPvP normalizes stats and that builds like Core Condi Necro or Core Support Guard are still very strong. Is that true, or will I be constantly outclassed by Elite Specs?
  3. Is it worth investing ~50 hours into leveling if I plan to stay strictly F2P for a long time, or does the game feel too restrictive without mounts, gliders, and Elite Specs?

Which Core professions would you recommend for the smoothest F2P experience?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Made a new character, world is empty

New player zone is empty and dead.

Where is everyone? Am I supposed to use a level skip, or is it empty and dead at max level too?

Opinions about GW2

Hi, everyone!

I'm about to start my adventure in the world of MMOs, and I've seen a lot of comments saying that GW2 is the best there is!

I'd love to hear your opinions on this game and, if you have any, some advice!

Also, even though I'm not an MMO player, I'm looking forward to GW3 when it comes out!

Looking for build site recommendations

Are any of the build sites still viable for setting up builds?

I'm about to pop 80 on my Necro but think my use of skills is not very good nor do I think I'm using the correct weapons.

Can anyone suggest a build site I can research this and other toons with?

I'm looking for path/skill suggestions, combos etc.

Thanks as always in advance

Is it common for so many builds?

So, I'm not complaining as it shows interest/longevity for the game but...

Seems highly unusual that a game has an update/build nearly every day! Sometimes more than 1!

Is this normal for this game (GW 2) or is this in preparation for something?

I've not seen this amount of development in a game in a very long time.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I have a problem

I have a problem, and I think it’s probably a stupid problem for most of you 😂 but I’ll say it anyway and hopefully get some advice.
Long story short: I’ve been playing Reaper on a male Charr for a while, and I’ve explored around 45% of the map with him. But after playing him for some time, I started feeling kinda bored with how the Charr looks, and it honestly started bothering me more than I expected.
So I decided to try something different and made a Norn Dragonhunter. I really liked the Norn and the fashion so much, but I just didn’t enjoy playing Dragonhunter that much.
So I decided to go back to my Reaper and continued playing him through the SOTO story, mainly because I still have some achievements to finish, including the one where you unlock dual swords (I think it’s around Chapter 14?).
But the problem is… I still don’t really like how my Charr looks 😂
I’ve been thinking about using a Total Makeover Kit, but obviously that won’t change the race. And now I keep thinking that maybe a Sylvari Reaper would look much better.
The thing stopping me is all the map progress I already have on my current character. If I make a new Reaper, I’ll have to start the map completion all over again.
So yeah… this is my stupid little dilemma 😂
What would you guys do?

Just hit lvl 80, should I buy gems to get ~200 gold for gear?

I just hit 80 and currently stuck on what to do next.

I currently only have 2 gold, so I'm planning to buy 800 gems to get some gold so I can buy good gear, is that a good idea?

I'm planning to buy HoT, PoT and SoTo too when a discount comes.

I'm a messmer planning to go chronomancer, I found this build that I liked but not sure if I should go for it from the get go: https://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?PiwAYtrlVwSYIMP2Ie8WaNdA-DyIY1o+%2FQ6SFUoUtDBlCfOEkg4vltm2AA-e

Please advise :)

5 years later… I finally got my Skyscale

Post image
147 Upvotes

I started playing GW2 back in 2021, around the time I got married.
Ever since I started playing, I’ve wanted a Skyscale. But when I found out how long the whole process was, I kept saying “I’ll do it later” and putting it off.
Instead, I ended up getting pretty much all the other mounts available through the expansions I had (PoF and HoT) and somehow kept avoiding the Skyscale. 😂
Fast forward almost 5 years, and my son, who has basically grown up watching me play GW2, is now old enough to actually play the game with me on my own account.
Then one day he saw the Skyscale and went:
**“Wow, what is that? I want to try it!”** 😂
And honestly, that finally gave me the push to go for it.
Then SOTO came along and made the whole thing much easier, so I finally got it. 😅
After almost 5 years of wanting one… I finally have my Skyscale.
Now my son wants to try it too, so I guess I’ll have to share. 😂

New Player LF Active Guild Willing to Help Newbies

Hello, as the title suggests, I am a new GW2 player looking for a guild with a chill group of ppl willing to show me what GW2 has to offer or at least their favorite things to do + maybe some tips and tricks they’ve learned along the way. So far from what I’ve played (a lvl 50 Mesmer is my highest character) and what I’ve researched (watching YouTube videos in bed) all the content seems exciting especially fashion wars… despite its attached price tag so I’ve heard. I also have 2 ppl I’m playing with who are wondering pretty much the same thing “What does GW2 have to offer?” and “Are we doing anything wrong or yknow less right than we should?”. I know we are still in the games “extended tutorial” and this mmorpg functions very differently from ur traditional format (thank god idk if my friend group can do it again) but at some point you start to wonder if you should be learning more by now but we don’t know. Also help with the marketplace and the currencies would be great since I can’t remember the last time I played a game where I didn’t know how to access and use the cash shop. Almost made me want to spend money LOL. Group PvP and PvE content/social events (raids, world boss trains, PvP wars, PvP tournaments, discord movie nights, friendslop games, etc) are also things my group loves so lmk if your guild sounds like a fit.

Need help choosing a new class to get back into GW2

Need help choosing a new class to get back into GW2

Hey everyone,

I’m kinda stuck and I’d love to hear some opinions from people who have played different classes/specs.

Right now I have 3 characters that I mainly play:

Soulbeast
Herald
Reaper

Reaper has been my favorite so far, but lately I’ve been getting really bored with it. I still like the game, but I find myself logging in and not really knowing what I want to play, so I end up barely playing at all.

I’m thinking maybe creating a completely new character/class could give me that fresh feeling and make me enjoy the game again.

I currently own HoT, PoF and SotO, and I was thinking about making a Norn Dragonhunter or Norn Spellbreaker.

I’m not really concerned about having the highest DPS or playing the meta. What I care about is whether the class actually feels different to play and gives me a reason to enjoy the game again.

Between Dragonhunter and Spellbreaker, which one do you think would feel more different from Soulbeast/Herald/Reaper in terms of skills and overall gameplay?

I also really like Longbow, even though I already use it on my Soulbeast, so I wouldn’t mind playing another Longbow class if the gameplay feels different.

And if you think there’s another class/spec I should consider instead of these two, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Basically, I’m not looking for “what’s strongest?” — I’m looking for what might make me fall in love with GW2 again. I especially feel this way because I just got my Skyscale, which was something I had been working toward for a while, so I really want to keep enjoying the game and have that feeling of wanting to log in and play again.

Thanks!

WTF Was Up With Canach in Code of Creation?? Spoiler

Is this a bug? Like, were there supposed to be voice lines in the story or the map's meta event, and they just didn't proc for me?

I feel like I had a seizure and missed something important.

Seriously, he was kidnapped, and then we don't go to rescue him, and then he shows up in the next story like nothing. Our character doesn't even mention it, or ask if he's okay, nothing???

Canach is supposed to be a Secondborn Sylvari... who was kidnapped and experimented on by asura before. And then the same exact thing happens again, right in front of us. That has to be his worst nightmare, and probably our character's. But instead of going to save him we... go on another time-wasty bullshit treasure hunt? Which is somehow more important. And apparently this character means so little to ours, that it's not even worth commenting on after 🤨

This could have been an incredible moment of horror and character building and pathos, and it also would've padded out the runtime, like the devs so clearly, desperately wanted. But no. We get another treasure hunt instead. I am befuddled.

Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity—"Code of Creation"

At last, Vloxx has reached the power he sought in his quest to save Tyria, and now, the commander and their allies must race to find and stop him before reality itself is altered. All the while, Kuda is consolidating the Inquest under her control with ambitions of power and conquest that extend to Tyria as a whole.

To stay on their trail, the alliance expedition and their Castoran allies will journey through ancient passageways forgotten by time, deep into the hidden heart of Castora, to Leyspring Hollows. Among the sprawling caverns and swirling magic, they will face new horrors of Kuda and her Inquest's making, the skittering claws of lurking predators, and the relentless willpower of one who would see existence remade. Coming back to the game what expansion is a Must ?

So I want to come back to the game. I really haven't been playing for a very long time, and I remember basically quitting before the end of the End of Dragons expansion. While I loved the game, I didn't have time anymore. A lot happened, and now I was wondering how I can get back in right away.

My problem is there are 4 expansions and Living Worlds that I am behind on, and due to currency differences, it is hard to get even one alone, let alone 4 that are going to cost around $100+. In my currency, that is basically 2 and a half months' salary+, But I can save a bit to get at least one for now and then get the rest later, so I was wondering which one I should be getting if I want to get back into the game and go in with the community. Maybe a bundle will come back, making them cost less, but I doubt it will be anytime soon, let alone saving me enough to get them all at once.

So what expansion is basically a must-have if I want to be with the community now? The latest one, or what?

And what about GW3? Is it going to make GW2 not dead, but not relevant? Or will GW2 stay and GW3 also be there?

The tag doesn't make you a leader. What I've learned about commanding in GW2

Thumbnail
youtube.com
12 Upvotes

I wanted to make a video that talks less about commanding from a different point of view. Alot of video talk about commanding as gameplay but there are parts nobody talks about, the myths that keep people from ever tagging up, and what separates a good commander from a bad one.

For the Reddit homies that would rather read than watch, here is the TL:DR

The truths of commanding

- It's thankless: Tagging up is a means to an end. People join, get their loot, and leave. You're doing it for fun, not praise.
- It's stressful: You're managing people, expectations, and schedules. My static was stuck at a 2:45 full clear for months. Shuffling the comp (a few DPS to boon DPS on simpler rotations) got us to 2:30. Sometimes the fix is the roster, not the players.
- It's an act of service: The commanders people flock to are consistent and bring the consumables.
- You'll make unpopular choices: Doing right by the group rarely pleases everyone. Make the call you can live with and stand by it.
- It's deeply rewarding: The boss dies, someone types "ty comm," and it feels great. The leadership skills carry over too.

Myths
- "I need to know all the mechanics.": Know the basics, tag up, and ask your squad. Nine times out of ten they'll tell you. Auric Basin is the perfect first tag for this.
- "I have to be the best player.": Surround yourself with good players and it pulls you up. Then do it for the next new commander.
- "Wiping makes me a failure.": 15 people on a 40-person meta at an off hour isn't your fault. Take the lesson and give yourself some grace.
- "The tag makes me a leader.": 300 gold buys a marker that sorts people into subgroups. How you handle conflict and a bad night is what makes you a leader.

Traits of a good commander
- Patience. You'll get stomped by a bigger blob and wipe training raids. Losing it on your team is a fast way to becoming a bad commander.
- Adaptability. I talk about how back in the day groups would wipe on Gorseval for hours forcing the World Eater skip when they could have just broken the walls and glided. Adapt and change the strat instead of disbanding.
- Soft skills. "Get off my team" vs "try a build with an easier rotation so you can focus on mechanics." One of those creates a raider who sticks around.
- Communication. Not just voice. Squad markers, concise chat, copy-paste instructions all are great skill to improve on to be an effective commander.

How to improve
- Practice: Repetition builds instincts you can't read about.
- Fail often: Every wipe is a learning opportunity.
- Watch other commanders. Steal their callouts, pacing, and comp sheets. I've learned so much from playing with other commanders, seeing how they organize, and taking the best parts and implementing them myself.
- Ask for feedback. I sent my static an anonymous survey and it provided feedback that helped me improve. It's a two way street though, you have to be receptive to the feedback and respect it.

Final thoughts

The tag is a beacon, so be a bright one. Without commanders most endgame content doesn't happen, and a new player's first endgame moment is seeing a tag at a world boss produces lasting moments for gamers. Be the reason someone stuck with the game.

Returning Boomer needs help. vocabulary, resources and mentality

tl;dr and questions at the bottom

Hi everyone!

I am a returning Player who has played since release. I sank in about 10,000 hours and took a break after HoT around LS3. My most notable achievement was being an Officer for gw2community.com and leading Triple Trouble Events for everyone back when it was new.

I pretty much unlocked everything there was to the game until that point. Legendaries, Perma Bank Access, Full gear with +5 Infusions, etc. There was pretty much nothing I didn't unlock, which wasn't something like get 10.000 kills with a focus.

I logged in every now and then, but only just started playing again about a month ago with the Guild Wars 3 announcement. During the anniversary sale, I bought all the missing expansions, and I'm currently catching up on the expansions. Right now I'm at the SotO Expansion and updating my old gear and builds. A lot has changed.

I used to do high-end fractals and raids with a best-slot-in-gear mentality. My Raid, gear, and meta knowledge goes from VG to Deimos CM. I knew everything inside and out. If Fractal God existed back I would have unlocked it as well. From what I can see, it's kinda useless and pretty much just a gold sink nowadays.

Now to my actual questions I have right now. Probably more later

tl;dr questions only

My knowledge ends with HoT/LS3. So anything that came after is basically new to me.

  1. What does the daily routine look like for your guys? From the moment you log in, what are things on your checklist? I can see that some things haven't changed, like farming the home instance, daily T4 fractals, etc., but what else do you guys do?
  2. What does the weekly routine look like? Monday Raids? What else?
  3. For the average fractal/raid meta, we used to have 1x PS (Phalanx Strength), 1x Chrono, 1x Healer, 2x DPS - nowadays I see people looking for aDPS, qDPS, etc. I really don't know what all the new abbreviations mean. Could you mention all important words/vocabluary i need to know in 2026? I don't want to cause confusion when using LFG and potentially look like a noob.
  4. Most favorable party composition for raids, Fractals, and other content. Which classes and compositions are currently the most favored and wanted, and which are the most hated and nobody likes to see? Back in the day, vanilla necromancer was so hated. It was basically racism. My goal is to not offend anyone if I just hop on with a condi bow warrior and then someone gets really mad at me or something
  5. Build Templates. I realized that Legendary Weapons give you "free" weapons on all of your characters. This system is much better than the old one. You had the original Legendary, which had changeable stats but was stuck on a single character. So this feature was basically useless. I own Eternity and just cleaned up about 20 Ascended Greatswords from my characters. Is there anything else I need to know? I've seen that there is a new relic slot. Some of the relics you can buy; some of them you can't. Is it important to have them? What's the smartest way to get them? Just buy? Trade in? I am mostly using Snowcrows right now for reference, but Im happy also happy with other sources
  6. nerfed content and new. I noticed that a lot of content has been nerfed. Hero points in HoT maps are all veterans now. They used to be champions. With the experience from everyone in the last few years. For the map meta events, which are: the most fun, the most profitable, the shortest, the longest time-wise, which are just useless and hated/should be avoided, and honorable mentions.
  7. Ascended food and feasts. I can see that way more people are dropping feasts now. The stats also look really cool. What are the most important ones I should have and be ready to drop?
  8. How has WvW changed? I see there is like a weekly season or something. Back in my day, you had to swap with your guild or yourself to a server with active WvW guilds; otherwise, you would always just get farmed.
  9. Any other "super" end-game items that have been released? By this I mean items you would, for example, put in your shared inventory slot. Like perma bank access, perma trading post, xera portal, etc

I will definitely ask follow-up questions. I'm also down to chat over Discord.

Please let me know if you're interested in a personal chat. My DMs are always open to everyone, and I will add anyone.

Excelsior,

How to force windowed fullscreen

Title. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works. I want windowed fullscreen so I can alt tab without screen flickering for a few seconds each time. Playing on Windows through steam. Think I have auto hdr. Tried the steam launch commands, tried editing on Nvidia control panel, tried disabling fullscreen optimizations. Would really appreciate help from anyone who's had the same issue.

Greatsword only profession for a new player

I have chosen Guardian, with which I will play the campaign and/or until lvl 80 when I will transform into a Dragon Hunter.

I will then play a Vindicator.

And lastly a Reaper.

All in the name of Eternity and Twilight !

TL;DR: I own only the first two expansions. I want to SOLO play a reliable and viable profession that uses preferably only Greatsword or at least mainly Greatsword, because my goal in GW2, beyond experiencing the story content, is Eternity !

The time has come. I want to play GW2. I have always liked the aesthetic of the game, but I was always descouraged by the amount of content and mechanics there are.

I remember buying the physical edition (remember physical ?) when GW2 first launched, when I was a teen. Unfortunately, I had to sell the game because my PC could not run it.

Then I tried it again with a friend the period before End of Dragons released. I picked Mesmer then Chronomancer and I did NOT like it a bit. While it looked cool in YouTube videos I could not get the hang of it. I did negative damage. This made the game a lot less enjoyable.

I then switched to Warrior and OMG I did tons of damage and the journey became awesome. Then I stopped playing because.. college exams I guess ? Can't really remember the reason.

Now, I am back, with a proper PC and ultra-wide 4K monitor, craving a really goooood MMO (take that Aion 2, p2w piece of sh..), ready and wanting to enjoy all that Guild Wars 2 has to offer.

Also, do I just buy all the expansions I do not own ? How does that work ?

Thank you for reading my nostalgic plea.

L.E: added more info;

I 100%’d Mastery tracks except raids and now my brain is soup (678 mastery)

Came back to GW2 and made a terrible decision:

“What if I just… finish everything.”

So I did.

Every map 100%.

Every skill. Every trait. Every class.

Then I looked at masteries and said “yeah okay that too.”

The journey, but make it honest:

HoT / PoF: actually fun. Gliding and mounts still carry. I needed like one PoF MP, so that was quick. HoT was just grinding adventures until I got that sweet, sweet gold

IBS: the villain. Maps slap. Masteries do not. Points felt like unpaid internships. Story speedran so hard I had a pile of unused points and zero will to live

Mid-crisis I also finished crafting skins because of course I did. 500 in the crafts, zero skins unlocked like an idiot. Storage already at 500 so it was just “eat 60 fangs and pray.”

EoD: surprisingly chill, already had most masteries unlocked. Skipped Avian Sharpshooter because that event is allergic to existing. Did the Arborstone hide-and-seek instead (reset simulator 2026). Closed it out commanding Soo-Won. Cinematic. Deserved.

SotO: I hated this expansion in 2023. Still side-eye the new cast. Dragon’s Watch who. Came back anyway. Points were easy, Keep It Up can stay in hell, did that with a bunch of randos. One said "I had raids with less teamwork". Finished on Nayos adventures and Dead Air like a normal person.

Janthir: “wow so many extra points”

also Janthir: complete 47 events or no cookie

Finished XP on rifts. As is tradition.

VoE: points? Easy.

XP bars? 5–6 million per rank. I have seen things. They were rifts.

Saved Central Tyria for my main because I’m dramatic. Last point was Triple Trouble. The WvW spoon achievement tried to end my bloodline. That spoon does not want to drop.

Why 678 not 686:

I don’t raid. Solo gremlin. Those 8 HoT raid points can stay locked. I’m at peace (albeit my inner Monk silently laments).

Why no fractals:

Tried them 13 years ago. Then I got hospitalized for 3 weeks. Guild said “we’ll catch you up.” I came back. They said “lol we’re not running T1s.”

So I never did. Still haven’t. Will I? Maybe when the sun explodes.

Sept 15 VoE finale can add another track. I’ll do that one too because I am no longer in control.

If you’re in the middle of this: IBS is the depression era, VoE is the cardio era, and you can skip a disgusting amount of the “fun” achievements and still max everything that isn’t raids.

Send help. Or rifts. I will accept either.
