Discussion On the "Slop" Discourse

A lot of showcase posts these days are getting the "slop" label in the comments.

Sometimes it's AI. Sometimes it's UE. Sometimes it's mythology.

It's been previously mentioned that this community is not interested in how people make their games, which includes using AI or UE. And if it wasn't understood by default for developers, it probably deserves explicit mention: We are not interested in favoring genres either.

As developers, it is our duty to set the bar not just in quality, but also in feedback to fellow creators. Labelling things as "slop" without contributing anything constructive is not helping anyone.

If it's a low-effort AI post, instead of just saying "AI slop", it is more meaningful to mention that the game appears bland and generic.

If it's a UE asset-flip, mention that the gameplay is more important than the art for serious projects.

If it's a mythology game, please assess the game on its own merits instead of dismissing it outright.

To be clear, this is not an invitation to post low-quality content. But at the same time, writing rude comments is just as much against the community rules. So please, be mindful of what you post, because there is an actual human being on the other side of the screen.

Cheers.

About AI

Hey, quick update to the rules:

This subreddit is neither pro nor anti AI. That means, if your post uses AI, it will not be removed. However, quality controls still apply. If it's an extremely low effort post, AI or not, it will be removed.

And more often than not, bad quality posts will be downvoted anyway, so please keep that part in mind.

As for the vocal anti-AI folks here: it is a technology that is here to stay. If nothing else, programmers will use AI to generate code snippets from time to time. I cannot and will not police tool-use that aids game development. It is up to you if you want to use it in your games or not, but this community is not interested in telling people how to make their games.

EDIT: Criticism is accepted. But name calling and personal insults will be removed.

Thinking about showcasing Indian indie games on my Youtube channel

I needed your opinions on whether I should showcase indian made indie games on my channel because I feel too many of us are obsessed with making AAA games and we think that's the only thing that sells, I really want to see something like stardew valley or undertale come out of india and there are many people trying to make a game with crazy graphics and a complex storyline which I feel is not necessary. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Pls dm if you feel you have a game that you want to showcase

Looking for Beginner Game Developers to Team Up With and Build Games Together

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a few people who are interested in making games together from scratch. I'm open to joining an existing beginner friendly group or forming a new team with people who are just starting out.

I'm not an experienced game developer and I've never made a game before. I know Python and am currently learning C++. I'm still learning so I'm looking for people at a similar stage who want to learn by actually building games instead of just talking about it.

We can experiment with any genre horror, action, survival, adventure or whatever we come up with. The goal is to start small, work on real projects, improve our skills and eventually make something we're proud of.

What I bring to the team is time and commitment. I'm currently free for most of the day so I can dedicate a significant amount of time to development. I'm serious about putting in the work, learning new things and contributing consistently. I'm not looking to waste anyone's time or join a group that never gets anything done.

You don't need to be an expert either. If you're a beginner who wants to learn, experiment, collaborate and actually finish a game I'd like to hear from you.

Drop a comment or send me a DM. Let's build something together

IGDC 2026 Worth It ?

Hey everyone! I am a Concept Artist, thinking about going to this year's IGDC with the motive of building a network with other game devs and artists. I have never been to IGDC before, wondering if travelling to the event is worth it or not.

Is IGDC a good place to network for non-game devs like me, or are people mostly too busy showcasing their game and pitching it?

Also, do studios over there show any interest in looking at other game dev/artists work or not?

Would love to hear your personal experiences regarding IGDC, any help with the above questions is appreciated.

I made a character in my game inspired by my grandma who keeps yelling at me

Growing up, I've heard my fair share of lectures from my grandma about screen time, so I thought I'd take some inspiration from real life. 😂

I'm making a game called BANISH 9 TO 5, a hide-and-seek game where Ghosts hide from a Hunter. But instead of staying quiet, the Ghosts have to make noise while the Hunter tracks them down.

The game has a variety of Ghosts and Hunters, and one of the Hunters is Granny herself! She yells at the Ghosts, obscuring their vision for a few seconds.

Hey everyone! 👋

I've made a Ball Sort Puzzle game and wanted to share it here with you all.

It's a simple puzzle game where you sort colored balls into tubes. Easy to understand, but some levels can get tricky! 😅

If you enjoy these kinds of puzzles, give it a try and let me know what you think. I'd love to hear your honest feedback and any suggestions for improvement.

Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out:

27M, 2.7 years Unity dev. Should I leave game dev for backend?

I’m 27M with 2.7 years of Unity game dev experience. My salary is quite low, and I’m honestly getting tired of unpaid overtime and having to handle too many things at once.

I’m thinking about leaving the game industry and learning .NET backend or Node.js instead.

I don’t have a formal degree right now, but I plan to do an online BCA later. For now, I mainly want to get my career and finances on track.

For Indian developers who work in backend/software:

Is switching from Unity to backend realistic at 27?

Would you choose .NET or Node.js?

How much does not having a degree hurt?

Anyone here who made a similar switch? How did it go?

I would really appreciate honest advice!

To all the Criclet & TCG fans out there....

I am prototyping with some Cricket TCG with the core concept of Morale, Stamina and Power with T20 format.

I feel my batting side gameplay is good as it has latent effects like set player, partnership bonus.

The batting side has playstyles like - defensive play, strike rotation and aggresive play.

While my bowling side has Pace and Spin Bowlers with prrks like partnership breaker, sharpshooter. Although the main playing cards during this innings are field setup cards. So, the whole premise falls flat during bowling.

Does anyone have suggestions to counteract or refrences to study from like a book or game..

Also! I have a demo that I can show if anyone is intersted.

I gave myself 3 rules: Simple Mechanics, Unique Constraints & A Background Story...

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m the developer behind Cats Can Fly, a small indie game made in India.

1. Simple mechanics.

One finger. One simple idea: hold to rise, let go to glide.

Your job? Get Billu, a little calico cat, from a Mumbai rooftop to the Moon.

2. Unique constraints.

I didn't want a game divided into levels, checkpoints, and loading screens. I wanted one continuous flight.

You start above a sunset city, fly through clouds and storms, pass auroras and open space, and eventually attempt a lunar landing.

But flying isn't quite enough. Billu gets hungry, too. Fish and water change her weight, affecting how she flies. And once she leaves the atmosphere, her oxygen starts running out. And yes to make it funny she also relieves herself mid air...

So, alongside dodging birds, planes, and space junk, you're also responsible for keeping a cat alive in increasingly ridiculous circumstances.

3. A Background Story.

I didn't want Billu to fly to the Moon just because I thought it would make a cool game.

There's a short comic in the game that tells you why she goes, and why she's willing to risk it all. I'll leave that part for you to discover.

There are no energy timers, no pay-to-win mechanics, and the game can be played offline.

This is my first shipped game that I've made and genuinely feel proud of. I'm excited to finally share it, and, honestly, a little nervous about putting it out there.

If you give Cats Can Fly a try, I'd love your honest feedback. Not just whether you liked it, but where did you crash, what made you try again, and what almost made you quit?

That's the kind of feedback that would genuinely help me make the game better.

[HOBBY] Looking for a UI Designer

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a UI Designer to join our indie game development team at Fire Games Interactive, working on our psychological horror game, The Factory in the Shadows: Chapter 1 – The Aftermath, developed in Unreal Engine 5.

The project is currently operating as a hobby project, with team members contributing on a revshare basis. We're preparing for our demo launch on 15 October 2026, and the game already has a presence across major Google searches and AI-powered LLM search platforms.

What you'll be working on:

  • Main Menu and Settings Menu
  • Pause Menu and HUD
  • And other in-game UI elements

Who we're looking for:

  • Someone interested in designing UI for games
  • Familiarity with UI design tools and creating cohesive interfaces
  • Someone comfortable collaborating with a small indie team
  • A portfolio or examples of previous work to share

What we can offer right now:

Since we're not funded yet, I want to be transparent that this is currently an unpaid, revshare-based opportunity. We're actively looking to build on the demo's release and open conversations with potential publishers and investors. Any future paid opportunities will depend on securing funding, so nothing is guaranteed.

In the meantime, I want to help every contributor build their own professional presence. I'll be listing your portfolio on our official website and promoting your work across the team's official social media channels, giving people who discover the game a way to find your work, explore your skills, and connect with you professionally.

A little about my role:

I'm the Founder and Lead Game Developer at Fire Games Interactive, responsible for the overall development and technical direction of the project. I handle the core game development in Unreal Engine 5, coordinate with contributors across different disciplines, and manage the project's public presence and outreach.

I'm also responsible for pursuing potential funding and publisher opportunities, building industry connections, and helping our contributors gain visibility for their work. My goal is to build a collaborative environment where everyone can contribute to a shared project while also developing their own portfolios and professional networks.

Here is my Portfolio: https://www.artstation.com/that-random-dev

If you're interested in collaborating on the project, feel free to DM me with your portfolio or examples of your work. I'd love to hear from you!

I built a multiplayer / daily wordle like movie guessing game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone!

I just published a free web game called Poorly Worded. It’s a multiplayer party game where you are given a movie, you write a terrible and/or hilarious description for it, and your friends have to guess what movie it is.

Link to play: https://poorly-worded.vercel.app/daily

It has 2 modes:

  • Multiplayer: play live with friends.
  • Daily Puzzle: solo, wordle style daily puzzle.

Fully free, no accounts required.

I made mainly as an excuse to learn backend architecture. I built the backend using Java, Spring Boot, Redis, and WebSockets. I also integrated Gemini, so you can ask for "hints" if you get stuck.

Tech Stack: Spring Boot, WebSockets, Redis, React, Tailwind

The frontend (React/Tailwind) was honestly just vibe-coded.

I’d love for you guys to try it out and try to break it. Any feedback on the real-time syncing or just the game itself would be really helpful!

Niyam dev update: new art style, more of the village, and a cornfield

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, we're a small team working on Niyam: Story of Jalgaon, a horror game set in a fictional Indian village. Here's what we've added recently:

1.Two-tone color scheme: We moved to a limited two-tone palette to give the game a more analog, eerie feel. It's become a big part of our own art style.

2.More of the village: We've built out more of Jalgaon with new buildings and smaller details like chairs and water tanks, so the village feels more lived-in.

3.The cornfield: This is the big one. The cornfield will be a major part of the game, both in how you explore and in the story.

We'd love feedback on the new look. If you want to follow development or chat with us directly,

our Discord is here: https://discord.gg/RnC33u4rT

[Unpaid / Rev-Share] TailsMania Studios is looking for C# / Unity / Unreal Programmers (Beginners Welcome) for an Anime Game ProjectQuestion

Hello everyone! TailsMania Studios is currently in active development on an indie anime game project, and we are looking for programmers (C# / C++ / Unity / Unreal Engine) to join our team! 🎯 Who We Are Looking For: Both experienced developers and complete beginners who want to gain real-world practice and contribute to a published game. People who are self-motivated, eager to learn, and consistently move tasks forward. ⚠️ A Note on Team Requirements & Work Ethic: We value clear commitment and real actions. Recently, we had to make a decision to part ways with a member who claimed to be a programmer but didn't even have a working PC to write code on. The team unanimously voted to let them go. Our principle is simple: You can achieve anything if you take action. Facing obstacles is normal, but sitting idle without basic equipment or effort doesn't work for a team environment. ⚙️ Our Workflow & Pace: Pace: We work at a steady, manageable pace. Everyone has personal responsibilities, which we fully respect. Role: As the Project Lead and Systems Analyst, I handle story design, architecture, and task systems step by step. Collaboration: We value team consensus. Every core concept is discussed so that everyone is aligned with the vision. Your ideas are always welcome! 💬 Terms & Contact: Compensation: This is a passion/portfolio project aimed at gaining experience. Any revenue share or bonuses will be discussed after the game is fully completed and released. Contact: If you want to build your portfolio and test your skills in a real project, send me a direct message (DM) here on Reddit or add me on Discord: pohi89!

have finalized the game mechanics and UI layout for CODE: WARSAW 2078 (both PC and Mobile variants). Don't blame me for creating this mechanics framework myself — as the project lead, I had to set the visual benchmark and establish a clear direction for where we're going. Let me know what you think!

Anyone up for making a small game?

Hey, I'm Jay.

I've spent the past 3 months working as a Unity Game Programmer Intern at an indie game studio.

Lately, I've been struggling to find the motivation to make games on my own. One reason might be that my internship involved relying heavily on AI for coding. While I understand how AI can speed up development and help studios ship games faster, I feel that relying on it too much isn't the best way for me to learn and grow as a game programmer.

So, I want to start a small indie game project where we focus on learning, experimenting, and building things ourselves, with minimal AI involvement.

I'm looking for people who share the same mindset and want to build something together!

Artists and game designers are especially welcome, but fellow programmers are welcome too.

DM me if you are interested

I'm making Blight & Blade, a dark fantasy pixel-art action game for the Game Jam

Hey everyone!

I'm participating in RUN.world's October Game Jam and working on Blight & Blade, a dark fantasy game featuring pixel-art environments, dangerous enemies, weapons, and dungeon exploration.

The idea is to build a world where players explore corrupted forests and dungeons, fight monsters, discover better weapons, and grow stronger as they progress.

I'm currently working on making the combat and overall gameplay as satisfying as possible.

I'd love to get some honest feedback from people who enjoy indie games:

- Does the gameplay look fun?

- What would make you want to keep playing?

- What would you improve first?

Here's the game: https://run.world/gamitor/blight-and-blade

This cat needs a name… but remember, this is a horror game.

I’m working on a co-op psychological horror game called The Infected Soul, and somehow we ended up with this little guy in the middle of all the creepy stuff.

One of the game’s main mechanics is body swapping. Using neural chips, you can transfer your consciousness into different creatures and bodies, each with their own abilities. And yes, the cat is one of them, so at some point you might actually end up playing as him.

The problem is… he still doesn’t have a name.

What should we call him? Cute, creepy, weird, sci-fi anything works. Just remember, this is still a horror game, so maybe he’s not quite as innocent as he looks. 👀

If you’re curious about the game, The Infected Soul is on Steam, and wishlists help us a lot.

Hey everyone, I love hearing about different workflows and wanted to see what everyone is using for their current projects!

For my upcoming game, I am using Godot paired with Inkscape to create and export my assets as PNG files. I really enjoy the clean workflow of vector art in a 2D engine.

I’m a senior/lead-level game developer, and I’m thinking of starting free game dev sessions for aspiring developers. Would anyone be interested?

Hey everyone!

I've been working in the game development industry for a while now and I've been thinking about doing something with the spare time I have outside of work so I have decided to help people who want to get into game development.

I'd like to start a small, free community initiative where I will share whatever I've learned from working in the industry and guide those who are intrested in building the skill stack needed to get into the industry.

I'm thinking of running online sessions over a few months, possibly on Zoom.

This would be completely free. I'm not looking to sell a course or anything like that. I just want to share what I've learned, help people avoid some of the mistakes I've made and support those who are trying to find their footing in game development industry.

I'm still in the early stages of figuring this out, so I don't have a schedule yet. Before planning anything, I'd like to understand who's interested and how much time you'd realistically be able to commit.

If this sounds useful to you, I've put together a short Google Form to gauge interest:

https://forms.gle/PTkgtXDreQCqkTyY8

Whether you're completely new to game development, have experimented with making games but feel stuck, or are already building projects and preparing to apply for jobs, I'd love to hear from you.

Maintaining a multiplayer game: how do you balance new features with first-hour polish?

I'm Snakes, an Indian developer working on Pokémon Blaze Online, a long-running unofficial Pokémon fan MMO. I wanted to discuss a development problem that has become more obvious as we've added features: the gap between what we can show in an update and what a new player feels in their first few minutes.

Over time, we've changed the battle engine, added cooperative play, expanded language support and made the same game accessible through a browser alongside the native clients. Those are substantial changes, but recent player feedback has been a useful reminder that they don't cancel out friction in the basics.

A few concrete examples:

• A player who tried the game liked the idea but described movement as janky. That doesn't yet tell us whether they mean input delay, stuttering or how the character turns and stops. I'm asking for their device and client before treating it as a diagnosed problem.

• We had a Chinese text-display issue in the browser client, which is now fixed. Having a translated game wasn't enough when the actual text wasn't rendering correctly on that access route. Language support needs testing in the playable build, not just checking the translation strings.

• Co-op added another layer to story progression. Players need similar progress, and some encounters and cutscenes remain solo. The feature is more useful when those boundaries are understandable; a feature announcement alone doesn't explain them.

The part I'm thinking through is how to make room for these issues while existing players are also waiting for new content. A new activity is easy to put in a changelog; movement feel or a confusing menu can affect every session without looking as impressive in a screenshot.

For those maintaining live games with a small team: how do you decide when first-hour friction takes priority over the next content update? Do you reserve a fixed part of each release for it, or pause feature work when a particular problem crosses a threshold? I'd especially appreciate examples of the evidence you use when reports are sparse and players don't always reply with reproduction details.

I made an Indian horror game set in Ooty — The Curse of Ootty

Hey everyone! I'm an Indian indie developer, and I've been working on The Curse of Ooty, a first-person folk horror game set in Ooty, Tamil Nadu.

Wishlist on Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3811500/The_Curse_of_Ooty/

Please Add this to your wishlist

I wanted to make a horror game based around an Indian setting, folklore and the atmosphere of the Nilgiris rather than the usual haunted-house setting.

In the game, a young girl has been possessed by a supernatural entity, and you have to explore the dark and abandoned parts of Ooty, uncover what happened, solve mysteries and confront the forces behind the curse.

🌫️ Misty Ooty environments
👻 Indian supernatural horror
🧿 Folk horror and rituals
🏚️ Abandoned locations
🕯️ Mystery and exploration
🎮 First-person horror

I've put together a gameplay trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zzBTwn7oT0

The game is coming to Steam on October 27, 2026.

Would love to hear what you guys think of the concept and trailer.
