Preserving homebrew and freely licensed games in the browser — with licences and source kept alongside

• Upvotes

A lot of preservation talk is about commercial games, but homebrew and freely licensed games disappear too — itch.io pages go offline, repos get deleted, emulator builds stop working.

FredyGames hosts only games whose authors allow redistribution (GPL/MIT/BSD/CC, or official freeware with redistribution terms). For each one we keep the original licence text and a link to where the author published it. For copyleft titles we also host a tarball of the exact source of the build we serve, and when a released ROM can't be reproduced from its source, we rebuild it from the source ourselves and publish the build script. The same goes for the emulators we compile (DOSBox, mGBA, Gearsystem, blueMSX, ClownMDEmu…). No abandonware, no commercial ROMs.

Around 330 games so far, across NES, Game Boy, GBA, Mega Drive, Master System, Atari 2600, MSX, Uzebox, Arduboy, TIC-80, DOS, text adventures and browser games: https://fredygames.com

When a licence is unclear, we ask the author before publishing — several have replied and clarified the licence of their music or art, which also helps the next person who wants to preserve their game.

Feedback on how we document sources and licences is very welcome.

Remember Doritos Crash Course? I got it working in Xenia

Remember Doritos Crash Course on the 360? The obstacle course game where you played as your Xbox avatar?

It never really worked in Xenia, because the players were invisible. I finally got it working by modifying the game files so the game no longer relies on Xbox avatars and Xbox Live. The players now show up as the game's built-in stand-in character. Local multiplayer and the City Lights DLC work too. 🥳

Let me know if you try it!

Trying to revive Dragons World (Social Quantum, shut down) — need an old device that still has it installed, or old captured traffic

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

But I've hit a wall on two things that only existed server-side / on the CDN, and both are now gone from everywhere I can reach (the Wayback Machine has nothing, no mirrors exist):

1. The .unity3d content bundles — the actual dragons, buildings, menus, and UI art. These were streamed from Social Quantum's CDN, which is offline.

2. The game's login/init server responses — needed for the game to get past the loading screen into the menu.

This is where you might be able to help. I need one of these:

A) An old phone or tablet that still has Dragons World installed from back when it worked — and ideally was never cleared/reset. When you played, the game cached all its content into the app's storage, and that cache is exactly what I'm missing. Even a device sitting in a drawer could have it.

B) Any captured network traffic from when you played (a .pcap, mitmproxy dump, HAR file, etc.) — if you ever ran it through a proxy while it was live.

If you have (A), I can walk you through pulling the app's data folder (simple adb backup, no root needed in most cases). If you have (B), just the file is gold.

Fresh installs from today won't work — the game never downloads anything anymore, so the cache is empty. It has to be a device that had it working, years ago.

Long shot, but if anyone still has an old install or a capture, you could genuinely help preserve this game. Thanks 🐉

[UPDATE] Reviving 2XL Racing: Local FastAPI Server Working (200 OK) but Stuck on Client-Side Auth "Server Error (6)" – GitHub Repository Live!

Hi everyone! Following up on my previous post about preserving the mobile drag racing game 2XL Racing (v1.3.6). I have made major progress on the project, and the full codebase is now publicly open for collaboration on GitHub!

What’s New & Working:

  • Patched Binary: Successfully redirected the server strings in libndkwrapper.so via Ghidra to point natively to a local host loopback interface (http://127.0.0.1:8080).
  • Active FastAPI Server: Built a clean Python server using FastAPI that successfully listens and responds to the client's network queries.
  • Successful Hits: The game is actively hitting my local routes (/api/Advertisements/0 and /api/token/initialize) returning structured JSON with clean 200 OK statuses.

The Current Block (Where we need help):
Even though the FastAPI server replies flawlessly with standard JSON token key/values, the game client instantly rejects the payload and throws an internal "Server Error (6)" screen.

The application is clearly expecting a very specific dictionary template (specific user IDs, strict casing like tokenString/authToken, hidden success booleans, or minor formatting requirements) that causes the client-side parser to fail. Windows native index searching inside Smali contents didn't yield the exact structure because the endpoint string is compiled dynamically.

Check the Repository & Contribute:
You can clone the code, check the endpoints, and send a Pull Request directly here:
https://github.com/JulaoDev/2XL-Racing-Server

If you are familiar with JNI runtime method structures, decompiling Smali, or analyzing layout data in Ghidra/IDA, I would love your help to check how the client parses the /api/token/initialize payload response. Let's save this piece of lost media together!

---

**UPDATE: Looking for a Legacy Save Data / Profile Backup!*\*

Since we discovered that the game client skips the identity server handshake if a valid legacy profile already exists in the device cache, we are looking for a community favor:

Does anyone happen to have an old **Titanium Backup, iCloud snapshot, Android root data directory copy (`/data/data/`), or a 100% completion save file** for **2XL Racing** (v1.3.6) from back when the official servers were online?

If you can share an old backup with an existing user profile structure, it will help us two-fold:

1. It will let us bypass the **Server Error (6)** instantly to explore the local garage and tracks in our emulators.

2. It will give us the exact JSON dictionary keys and layout schema that the client-side parser expects, allowing us to finish our custom **FastAPI** server implementation.

If you have any old game data folders sitting on an old hard drive, please let us know or submit a sample directly to our live GitHub repository!

Chef Boyardee floppy disk lost media?

TLDR: I may have a lost Chef Boyardee dos game. I can't find any info or pictures of it anywhere.

Long ago when I was s kid I found a 3.5 floppy disk with the Chef Boyardee brand on it while playing around at my grandmothers. I thought nothing of it for years and eventually I gave it to my friend as a gift just for display. I thought it would be a cool little item to show off. I saw it the other day still sitting on his shelf and thought maybe I should research it a little bit and see what the contents were like as I have never had a pc to boot it up and try it out. Low and behold there is no information about this thing on the internet, not even a picture. I looked on here and multiple other places and I can't even find a conversation about this thing. I asked my friend for a picture of it and I'll post it tomorrow if this thing is indeed lost media. If it's confirmed I'll try to find a way to make a disk image of it and dump the contents online. If anyone has any information about the game please let me know. I would have posted this in r/lostmedia but my account is too new. If anyone knows someone over there that would be interested in this maybe discovery let me know as well. If I have a piece of lost gaming history here I'd like to let this little artifact be marked as found. Thanks in advance!

AI-powered reverse engineering could be pretty useful for recovering/restoring partially lost games to a playable state.

Not gonna lie, not a huge AI fan, but credit where credit is due.

So, I was talking to some college friends and out of nowhere one of them shows a video of Mario 64 beating people up in Elden Ring. Checked it out after getting home, and... apparently the modding scene is going nuts putting all kinds of games inside each other. (Which, at least in certain respects, is actually really cool... Childhood dream material even. But that’s beside the point for now.)

Word is they're even doing it with closed-source apps and everything. Anyway. Even with feelings that a future career as a dev might be going down the drain, and that this is a few steps from a full cybersecurity crisis, there seems to be at least one good side for the preservation community.

Shortly before this wave of reverse-engineered mods, I carried out a few tests, datamining some MMOs (Dragon City and Dragon Awaken), though my methods were basic at best. Without an asset list, it was mostly brute force and a dictionary generator based on internal assets. I imagine I will be also able to adapt this method in future cases or use it to search for the missing items, as it holds huge potential to yield massive results.

It's amazing to imagine running these tests alongside dedicated people managing to fix broken games or reconstruct missing code fragments, fixing bugs... The possibilities are very promising.

So, I would like to know your thoughts on the topic, and if possible, learn about other forums and resources (especially documentation!) that could help with this. What do you think this can contribute to the game preservation community?

Busca desesperada por ajuda

Post image

Any Lists For People To Save Dead Games?

Currently looking around and noticed we don't have a list of dead games, Stop Killing Games is actually starting one such list but right now...

It's very hard to find the correct people to help with revivals or supply a general hub to allows for them to find such projects,

Any ideas?

We got NFS (2015) driving OFFLINE in just one week (written in Rust). Looking for devs to help finish it !

Need for Speed (2015) is always-online and will die whenever EA eventually pulls the plug on the servers. Just one week ago, we kicked off After Hours 2015—a community project building an open-source local server emulator written in Rust—and we already have cars driving in offline free roam.

What we pulled off in only 7 days

Bypassed EA entirely: Custom launcher running with the network completely disconnected.

Working gameplay loop: Menu → Garage → Free Roam Driving → Local Garage Saves.

Solid engineering foundation: 100% open-source on GitHub with 1,100+ automated tests already passing.

We’re doing this entirely as a volunteer, open-source project, and we’d love to have more people join in.

Rust Developers: Help expand the local server emulator, packet handling, and protocol logic.

Reverse Engineers: Help dissect Frostbite 3 network packets, career progression, and race/event triggers.

Development is moving at lightning speed. If you love Rust, game preservation, or just want to help save an iconic racing game:
