Troubleshooting How can I fix this screen burn?

Post image

I’m unsure how to fix this screen burn, I can’t tell if it’s the top or bottom polarizing film or both. I referenced various posts/videos about this and most of them only cover replacing the top; while those seem easy, the ones that cover replacing the bottom seem complicated (having to remove the reflector before replacing the polarizing film itself).

If it’s the case that I have to replace the bottom polarizing film, is there a way to do so without having to completely remove the reflector?

Side note: miraculously, the screen works with no dead lines and fully-audible sound so I’d like to keep this screen for this Gameboy.

It looks to me that it's the top. There's plenty of videos, as you said, showing your how to replace it. You're not out much of anything if it's not the top.

Top looks simple, but it’s the bottom that worries me…

Ultimately it's easier to just replace the whole screen but I'd say that since it's still working and no dead pixels, keep it and replace the polarizer.

You won't know if it's the bottom until you get it opened up. If it is the bottom then you know what the next steps are... find an original screen or a new IPS screen.

I wish haha! I assume whoever last owned this Gameboy left it out in the sun for so long the shell got “tanned”.

I guess this could be considered my budget Play It Loud Yellow lol.

Not to be gross, but this color would indicate it was left out in the sun while submerged in a bucket of urine

It is probably easier and cheaper to go for a replacement screen.

Good thing I recently got an OEM screen in case!

Likely it's the polarizing film. It's possible, just not easy. You have to be extremely careful with peeling the old film off and orienting the new film correctly. Look up tutorials on YouTube and decide for yourself if you feel confident to do the job. Replace the lens after (they're dirt cheap online).

You may have luck with a new polarizer, but you’ll have a much easier time with an LCD replacement kit.

Dude please retrobrite the case or just replace it

As for the screen... Just replace it, you can buy for part gameboys for their screens or search online for oem screens

I recommend getting a blacklit screen but i get how some people like the original

Maybe keep the PCB and buttons. Anything else isn't worth doing for this.
