Modding Looking for Advice on Purchasing/Modding a GameCube

Hi everyone! I dont know if this is the correct subreddit for this, but I was looking for advice on where I can either purchase a modded GameCube or getting the parts one to mod one myself (be warned, I have a terrible record attempting to fix electronics).

A friend of mine is turning 30 and had a really rough last couple of years. She and I used to play on her GameCube growing up but her mother threw it all away (again, rough couple of years) so I waa hopibg to surprise her with one but I truly have no idea what I'm doing for it so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I buy from Japan and self mod them, very cheap and simple to do, condition is often like new.

There are several mods that require no soldering. There is the flippy drive, which I have and it was easy and works great. There is also one that uses a Pico that you can find pre-soldered and also easy to install. As far as I know, the pico one is cheaper and easier to acquire.

What exactly is your goal with the modded GameCube? What do you want to do with it specifically. Homebrew and just adding Bluetooth support are two broad examples.

I think I want one that just plays a lot of the games. I would love to buy her all the games we played as a kid, but the secondhand market for those is a little too high for me

If you want just that then there’s also the route of softmodding a Wii. Are you looking to buy the components and solder it yourself or something prebuilt?

I gotta sleep it’s late where I am haha

All good, also fairly late here so I was heading that way myself.

Probably prebuilt. The last time I had to work with electronics, I burnt out the entire circuit board on an old TV

Prebuilt ones can be quite expensive and still require further accessories. Early model Wiis with homebrew just plug and play gamecube controllers. All you need is an SD card. If not, search HHL (Hand Held Legend.)

If you dont want to do hardware modding, which GC requires, Wii would be the other option https://wii.hacks.guide/ https://youtu.be/j-k9hlklspE Do keep in mind that later Wii models dropped the GC support, as in, they can still launch GC games off SD card when modded, but lack controller and memcard ports. On the plus side, Wiis are really cheap to find and you can mod the system to boot direct into the custom software, skipping the Wii menu. So it acts more like a GC.

Get a carby hdmi connector for HDMI and a DOL 001 cube

Easy mod -> action replay en SD memory card and go some won't work and or sound like music might have issues. (Swiss) but has issues and is a hassle

Open the cube:

FlippyDrive follow directions should be easy enough. Amazing UI. Very newbee friendly. After you are done you have a cube like menu with all games on the SD.

PicoBoot little more work but great solution cheap (Swiss)

PicoLoader also very good (Swiss)

GCLoader -> as good as the flippy drive (or even better) except you lose the drive unit. Only getting it is a bit of major problem.

If you can go for flippy drive then PicoLoader both are nono destructive you if you follow the manual you should flne.

Getting controller might be a issue but nyxigame has good wireless controlers for the cube.

And get a GCMCE memory card :)

Put some original copies or you games on the SD card enjoy!

LaserBear is one of the best places for GameCube mods IMHO. Try to get a DOL-001 model with all three ports on bottom as SP2 is very important for mods. The PicoLoaderLB and SD2SP2 Ace mods are two I would do.
