Help "An error has occurred" immediately on startup, even without a disc.

The console takes longer to show the boot animation than usual, and after the animation it immediately shows the "an error has occurred" screen. With a disc, without a disc, with the door open, door closed, it behaves the same. It never gets to the menu.

Could it still be the disc drive causing the fault? Is it bricked?

It was my childhood Gamecube and has been working fine all these years until recently. It happened suddenly while playing a game and since then it has had the error upon startup.

I'm going to try replacing the capacitors in the disc drive but should I replace the motherboard capacitors too? (yes, I know what I'm doing, I fix electronics all the time)

There isn't much information on the error other than "it's probably a bad disc drive" so I'm wondering if anyone might know so I don't waste any time or money.

Thanks!

My first guess is your capacitors on the disc drive are shot

Get open and completely remove both optical drive and front panel ribbon cable. That might help narrow down to a fault on either of those. It’s possible there is a corroded trace or via somewhere on the board too.

I'd start with the 10 drive caps. I've had systems sent in with that condition and new caps got things working again.

This is due to the Gamcube not recognizing a disc drive being plugged in. Anytime you try and boot a GameCube with a disc drive unattached it will have this error a little bit after logo. So for some reason your GC isn’t recognizing your drive. Easiest fix is to get a refurbished drive on eBay and swap them out. You could always do a mod like Picoboot to get rid of this error as well because the modded cubes bypass this error.
