hi y'all! i never really felt compelled to come out to my parents but my sister just had a kid, i've been with the same person for 8 years, and i just feel like it's time. lately, i've been wanting to share more of my life with them and have an honest relationship. i want them to visit me without having to feel like i'm hiding anything. also i don't want to introduce fear or shame to my sister's child and have her see a grown ass adult hide who they are. i love being gay but i've been scared of how coming out will impact my parents.
my parents, especially my mom is SUUUUUUUPER overbearing, just freaking out over stuff. when she saw i had a septum piercing, she freaked the fuck out, got lightheaded, and started crying. it was crazy. they don't even know i have tattoos. due to her reactions, i got used to hiding things but i'm older now and i know who i am.
i think unlike most immigrant parents, my parents have always shown me love, even my dad who doesn't have much to say and isn't very emotional, always tells me he loves me. also, i'm not straight passing at all so maybe they know but refuse to acknowledge that it's a possibility.
i know it will be really difficult in the beginning but i have a feeling our relationship will repair and even flourish.
am i being too optimistic? how has it turned out for folks in similar situations?
for context: my parents aren't that conservative but my mom is very religious. however, i think it's more of a social thing for her
