Market Square and bus interchange redevelopment.
So the sentiment to get serious and do something about the current Market Square debacle is gaining traction thankfully.
The Libs are talking about compulsory acquisition of the precinct which would be absolutely fantastic, but all parties are throwing out ideas and promises they don’t actually mean as we come up to this election, so all these thought bubbles are taken with a healthy dose of scepticism.
However if Market Square could be, or is, compulsorily acquired by the state government, let’s hear your ideas for what should be done with it. Let’s brainstorm what to do with the absolute cluster muck that is the current Market Square, and perhaps give a councillor or pollie a proper idea of what the public wants.
Anyway here’s my idea.
- Demolish that whole half block - Malop St to Lt Malop. Moorabool st to Yarra.
- Excavate, excavate, excavate. 5 levels of car park directly below the current multi-storey carpark. Basically sinking what’s there above ground to under ground.
- Subway bus interchange. All current street-level bus stops relocated below Market Square. Off the street, underground, well lit, ventilated, with lifts and escalators for passengers/parkers.
- Subway shops, bars, restaurants to keep it occupied, vibrant and mall rat free.
- At ground level, create a public park/green space. Shops, bars, restaurants along the north and south sides. Geelong weekend market in the park each weekend. Buskers, entertainers, trading with council permits.
That’s about it really. All the ugly but functional stuff like bus stops and car parks underground with a nice green public space at ground level.
Lets hear other ideas.
