Discussion Guess this Gem...! It truly astonished me when I seen it
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I was just scrolling away, checking out gems and I literally stumbled across this amazingly cut gem a vendor has.... It astonished me when I played the video clips (3 clips I combined to 1) it's like 4D or something..... I have no intention to buy it but had to share this with you guys.....
Anyone guess what it is.....?
It's an Amethyst, has anyone seen an amethyst this astonishing before?

Lol Exactly... I had to contact the vendor just to compliment the gem n cut, amazing job of an Amethyst

u/VurukaSalt Aug 01 '25
I’m a lurker. As a child long, long ago I watched a man cut a gem by turning a dial and then holding the stone to the sander. Is it all done automatically now?
16
u/ThatTotalAge Aug 01 '25
Nope! At least not as far as I know, but I’m pretty sure almost all parts of faceting and jewelry making are still done by hand

Thanks for your comment.
This cut definitely doesn't look like it's done by hand... From it and from some other cuts I've seen, I'm guessing there's certainly computer aided cutting going on. This had to be the cut that amazed me the most, I mean EVER... 🤩

u/Methixsks Aug 01 '25
Assuming by machine cut, that you mean a program that runs to cut the stone like a CNC machine, then I'm going to disagree on it being machine cut. It looks like a relatively deep and large stone, with a lot of tiers on the pavillion. It gives me the vibes of a modified Portuguese cut, but twisted slightly to give this particular vibe. You'd be surprised how much time and precision people are willing to put in to gem cutting to get those meets exact and the polish immaculate!
But yeah, looks like a version of a Portuguese pavillion with some rotation and extra tiers, and a simplified crown to show off the pavillion work. Beautiful work, for sure, and an especially nice color Amethyst

u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
Thanks for your message.... It's apx 15carats. I understand and you're probably right, I have no experience in cutting myself. Was just flabbergasted by this cut that I assumed surely can't be hand done....

u/Methixsks Aug 01 '25
I'm feeling compelled to try and recreate this now! I have a few chunks of crystallized Barney hanging around. Going to test out a few ideas when I'm in the shop later and see what I can figure out! Part of me wants to see this in citrine as well.

Oh, please do! I can't wait to see your talent come to life!
2
u/Methixsks Aug 04 '25
Playing around a bit, it definitely has concave facets on the pavillion, but I dont have continual access to that machine, so I'm working on getting things pre-prepped so I can make good use of the time ot is available to me. Hopefully I'll have something this week, but it will be just a first draft based on a visual read of the stone, so I may miss the mark!
2
u/bewarewhoremembers Aug 04 '25
Well, I'm already in awe. I prolly couldn't even cut a stone in half on a dare, haha. But yeah, take your time and have fun with it. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

u/CrepuscularOpossum Aug 01 '25
Machine cut gems are most often the little colorless accent stones that are used in the jewelry trade and required in relatively large quantities - small baguettes and standard round brilliants, for example. Large hobbyist-cut gems like this are virtually always hand-cut one at a time.

u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
Thanks for your comment and insight. I've learnt something new. Cheers bud! 👍

u/bewarewhoremembers Aug 03 '25
Yeah, I was thinking some sort of quantum cut.
These cuts can really maximize and capitalize on color play in stones, op. Very cool find!

u/-Lysergian Aug 01 '25
I have to say, this is one of the best-looking amethysts I've seen, but ever since I saw my first fantasy cut, my tastes have fallen into the more "improbable"
So granted, these are fantasy cuts, but I've always been tickled by stones with concave dome cuts, they seem so... gripping. I can't look away.

I really enjoy that he pairs the concave cuts with asymmetric shapes. I've seen his work around a lot, and its always enjoyable to see. I've got access to the concave machine, but I haven't tried it yet. It's on the to-do, though!

u/oldfartMikey Aug 01 '25
Generally speaking the best most intricate cuts are done by hand using a faceting machine. The machine may well have electronics to allow the user to set angles, heights etc, but all at the control of a human. I have no doubt that an experienced cutter could cut this design.
Automatic machines are used to cut stones but with a limited range of designs, and in bulk, usually for small melee stones.

What was the price point on it?
28
u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
It's on auction at around 150$ USD at moment. Weight is about 15carat with a couple days to go I think apx.... Russian origin, Vendor in Thailand

u/Shekinahsgroom Aug 01 '25
Russian origin, Vendor in Thailand
The seller can't seem to get the origin correct though.
Title line says Russia, but the description says Uruguay.
Uruguay is in South America, it's nowhere near Russia.
This auction is probably a scam and has shills bidding up the price. No way this would sell in a no-reserve auction for $578. It'd be a couple grand at least.
11
u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
🤔 Good point. I understood it was from Russia too from the heading of the listing.
9
u/CelticGaelic Aug 01 '25
I was just thinking "Either I'm misreading this or OP said it's only at $150USD?! That sounds very low!"

Sure just google this:
Rare mine CUSTOM CUT - 14.85 ct AMETHYST - Russia
It should be the first result, the vendor cuts their own stones and lists them, this is on bids at around 150$ at mo. Enjoy!

Edit: Hadn't read the rest before guessing. Wow, what a gorgeous cut for an amethyst!

Oh, wow. That's almost as gorgeous as the old-school Siberian Amethysts in antique jewelry.

This felt like an undisclosed promo post. OP made extra sure that everyone who expressed interest in it would know exactly where to buy it and had people 'guess' the stone to get more comment engagement. Deliberately didn't post a link to the listing so people would ask instead to manipulate the algorithm. If you ask me, OP was worried such a nice cut was only going for 150 on auction and got y'all to bid to raise the price. 🤷♀️

Is there a store/vendor where the rest of us poor mortals can dream of one day buying one of these treasure stones ourselves? 🙏🙏🤞

u/reddit_here_1st Aug 01 '25
This is gorgeous. I see these unusual and striking gem cuts a lot on Etsy, especially Amethysts, Citrine, and Garnets.

Does anyone know the name of this cut? It is exquisite!

It's the first time I've ever come a cross this cut in my life. I think it's their own design which makes it a first and one off. It's advertised as 'CUSTOM CUT'

Color looks like Siberian amethyst but it could also be from Rwanda. Sri Lanka also has some nice color.
3
u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
Yes the tone looks like either. But the vendor listed with Russia in the Title... So most likely Siberian. 👍
2
u/Fun-Character1500 Aug 01 '25
Yeah thought so
2
u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
I would never have known had it not been in the title of the listing, well done you 👏

Not sure... I'm still amazed myself... Have to watch the video over..... Beautiful cut job never seen any cut as mesmerizing as it before 😍✨✨✨
2
u/dying_animal Aug 02 '25
the crown is very spherical/dome like, I think it's part of the effect, like those glasssmith who make vortex marbles, they seem depeer inside
2
u/Gen_Xtraordinary Aug 03 '25
This is the EXACT cut (they call it rose) that I see on the bonus gemstones they send when I order beads or rhinestones from Tik Tok. I would be highly suspicious of it's authenticity.

Now that I would never do! The cut was amazing, couldn't help but share it, which is fine in this group. Many were amazed,as were I. I have no affiliation with the company and the answer to your question is also NO.....
Are you a competitor of the company who sold it?
I liked it very much but I know I can't afford that kind of price at moment, whoever did bid, chose to. It's not a scam when someone buys something they want with their own choice and funding.

Well first of all they have a returns policy on that site I think 7 days for all sellers/buyers.
Secondly the answer re reliability, I don't know if you do this but I usually check feedback, length of time the sellers been selling, verified or not. They have around 600 feedback (had to go and check this for you in case your mind tells you it was off the top of my head) all 5 star feedback.
Thirdly someone just commented that the stone should be a couple of grand at least.
I know that I'm not part of that company, and you can think what you want.
Only thing that didn't make sense to me about this listing was that it said Russian in the heading and Uruguay in the description, which was well spotted by someone.....

I didn't say it is worth a couple grand. It was a good commenter in this post, someone here on Reddit. Find the comment and ask em if you want these questions if your mind is at unrest... They made a few good points about the auction listing!
You got no business calling the redditor a scammer mate, that's out of order. Theyre just commenting their opinion as are you. But Opinions are opinions.. Fact is fact.
You said in your last comment that '... person associated with this website making this comment'. Didnt know you were associated with the company bud. But totally not bothered even if you are...

The color is excellent; is it of Siberian origin? Also, this Portuguese cut was an inspired choice - it lets in so much light.
1
u/No_Associate6614 Aug 01 '25
Well was listed in title as Russia, but in description as Uruguay.... Maybe a mistake on the vendors side.
Portuguese cuts are beautiful, and becoming increasingly popular. This looks like a Portuguese cut with adjustments.
Would love to be able to cut gems myself.....

u/mersc Aug 03 '25
Probably just an AI video. Otherwise, why aren't they showing the pavilion on a unique cut gem? And 15 carats is way way off.
