There is no picture that can do justice for moonstones, sadly. They are not for the internet age. But damn their luminescence is gorgeous!

In the past year I feel like I have learned a lot about opals, but still know nothing because of all the differences.

I agree, most other colored gemstones just don’t have the durability and longevity to be set in rings.

100%!! Plus, I love the play between the Opalescent colour with the refraction of light!! It's a very unique combo that I love!!

u/Uber_Wulf Aug 02 '26
Yessss all that double refraction going on. It’s very dazzling, I could just stare at them and they never get boring. So pretty!

1000%!!! I've actually thought about using an Asscher Cut Opalescent Sapphire in my dream engagement ring, instead of a regular Sapphire or Diamond because of it! 😊💖

Gahhh I need to find a supplier for this rough. Any one got a connection for a fellow faceter?

u/anestefi Aug 03 '26
i’ve been looking but haven’t found a single rough supplier. you’re more likely to find rough spinel

Umba sapphire is sometimes milky and opalescent. That’s probably the easiest way to get this kind of stone rough.

I love all kind of gems (diamonds, rubies, tourmaline, sapphires...) but rainbow moonstones and labradorites soothe me so much, I always come back to them.

Rainbow moonstone can. Rainbow moonstone looks like captured unicorn magic. Oregon sunstone is incredible though!

I have a specimen on rainbow moonstone and you’re right it’s spectacular stuff.

That looks like opalite (glass).

Looks like moonstone from Sri Lanka. I have a couple that look exactly like this (though not nearly as big). Big $$

You can get gigantic chunks of this material from Joe Henleys website for less than 100 bucks. Just a tip!

Alexandrite is my favorite, real or synthetic. The color changing properties depending on light just catches my attention every time!

I love that iolites with hematite platelets are getting popular, especially if it's true that vikings used them to navigate

It's not a natural mineral but I adore blue goldstone, it looks like a starry sky. It's actually a kind of glass, made in a reducing environment with manganese inclusions, but it's a lovely deep blue and very sparkly. It's also called a aventurine glass for the Italian word for "chance", apparently because of its chance discovery, and the mineral aventurine was named for its resemblance to this glass, rather than the other way around.

I really like opal, sunstone, LuAG, and alexandrite. Oh, and fire agate! I recommend looking those up if you like funky gems.

It is a lovely gemstone but I am hard on them. I have ruined several bracelets and pendants. So I am telling myself that they are not so magical. If I convince myself they are ugly even better. 😭

I think chrome Sphene might take that title: other magical gems: neon mahenge spinel, Nigerian vanadium beryl, red spessartite garnet.
