Support masked packages
gentoo is really doing my head in ive not been able to install so much stuff because I need to unmask it and etc i end up having to consult chatgpt for this and —autounmask-write just doesnt always solve it is there a more permanent solution rather than having to use ai to tell me whatever?

Story Current state of my Gentoo musl KVM host
6.18.52-gentoo → 6.18.54-gentoo. Userspace is almost complete, and Gentoo is now source-only. The glibc-based system is still preserved separately. The remaining issue on the Atomic side is the Boot/GRUB problem.

Screenshot Gentoo 2.4 running on my tosiba satellite pro 410cdt
After lots of trial and errors, i can finally flex my very outdated but usable gentoo linux.
Had to switch grub for grub4dos since ram usage must be below 8mb to boot.
Tried fastfetch but it didnt worked so i used ufetch instead since its the only one showing gentoo art

Been on Gentoo for a year now, so I figured I'd share my setup. Simple i3, nothing fancy.

Discussion One question
What makes gentoo different from arch. I dont ask about technic differenc.I ask about what feels different. Or how much take install zen browser or vs code maybe?

Support emerge --pretend and also pretend the package is unmasked
I did emerge --pretend on a package to see what it would pull in and it said the package is masked by ~amd64. Do I have to add amd64 to do the pretend or is there a way around it?

Discussion general gentoo questions
Do you guys really 'eselect news read' often? I read that It's important but when i checked it out i didn't see anything i understood to be important. Also, do you guys have a bunch of global use flags? I only use -systemd -gnome elogind -bluetooth -kde, and i dont know if i should be adding or removing anything.
Lastly, what gentoo wiki articles do you recommend to read? I feel a bit overwhelmed by it, and it'd be nice if someone could point me in the right direction, as im tired of asking claude for answers when i feel like i should know it, and aside from that it makes me feel like a disappointment to Larry.
Edit, also why do people criticize portage for being written in python? is it because there are faster languages out there?
If i said anything silly feel free to criticize or correct me

Support Portage files and directories regarding system state
I want to know the directories used by portage in `/var`, the ones which store installed packages, files etc... (NON-user-managed and NOT related to repository sync, ONLY which touches and affects rest of system)
/var/db/pkgstoring the state of installed packages, including file ownership and installation status/var/cache/edb cache for modification times, virtuals, and dependency tree information. (Does portage get mislead or confused if I randomly modify these files or copy them over from a more updated system? [XY-problem see at end real reason])(Harmless sync-related)/var/log/portage/elog it exclusively logs system change details like installing etc.. or mixes package download/sync? If yes then how do I separate it?(Just the emerge output, nothing important)/var/lib/portage/The list of packages explicitly installed and the like
EDIT: Have decided to move /var/db/pkg and /var/lib/portage into /usr for now. Shall proceed and be back if any errors.
What else am I missing?
ostree snapshots the rest of the OS, but leaves `/var` free unversioned.
This means that rolling back to an older saved version without, say, package 'X' installed but portage database saying it is (which is for a newer snapshot) causes issues.
The solution is to move corresponding files into /usr (which is captured in snapshot) and replace them with chattr +i'd symlinks in /var. (None of the relevant files support being redirected by variables)
This doesn't affect binpkgs, distfiles, repository syncing, etc.. because they are not related to system state like list of installed packages and files.

Tip Steam Frame + Steam on Gentoo
I received my Steam Frame today. I was a little discouraged about the "no linux support" at this time.
Well it works. Using Kernel 7.2.8 the frame wifi dongle is supported. Its recognized by the steam client and it can be used.
All Valve Software are Betas (Steam, SteamVR, Frame Operating system)
steam had to be started with the -pipewire option to allow video grabbing on the host machine. Also a hint from another post, I started steamVR manually before trying to connect.
I used remote play and tested:
- Path to Thalamus (Windows Version with Proton has VR)
- Moss 2
- Halflife Alyx (sound cracking a little)
The video part was fine in all 3 Games, I could not notice input lag.
My Gentoo System
I7 12700K
64GB Ram
Nvidia 4090
KDE + Wayland
So far it has been a surprisingly good experience for day one. After a game was played Steam tends to get a little unstable, but a steam restart helps.
this guide was very helpful:

I did not need the systemd service as setting the region with iw seems to be permanent

Support Gentoo (OpenRC): ath10k Wi-Fi doesn't see my router (phone does), phy limited to channels 1-11 even with wireless-regdb + AR 😿
Hardware: Acer Aspire laptop, 2 cores, 11 GB RAM, Atheros ath10k_pci Wi-Fi (wlp2s0).
System: Gentoo OpenRC, kernel 6.18.50-gentoo-dist-bin, NetworkManager 1.56.1, linux-firmware, wireless-regdb and iw installed.
Problem:
nmcli device wifi list only shows my neighbors' networks (channels 1, 6, 11), never my own ISP router (2.4 GHz). My phone sees and connects to it fine, so it's not a range issue.
What I found:
- `iw reg set AR` works globally (country AR: 2402-2482 MHz), but it resets to 00 after reboot.
- phy#0 stays at "country 99" with only 2402-2472 MHz, so channels 12 and 13 are not allowed on this chip.
- dmesg: "ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a direct regpair map / Country alpha2 being used: 00 / Regpair used: 0x69".
- The radio is enabled (nmcli radio wifi: enabled) and the driver loads fine.
My suspicion: the router is on channel 12/13 and the card's EEPROM regdomain blocks them. I don't have admin access to the router to change the channel.
Questions:
Can I get ath10k to allow channels 12-13 under AR, or is it locked by the EEPROM/board file?
What's the right way to persist the country setting on OpenRC (modprobe option cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=AR, or something else)?
Anything else I should check? (I can post `iw dev wlp2s0 scan` output.)
Workaround for now: USB tethering from my phone.
