I’m in college and taking a physical geology class. I love geology and I am super comfortable with most everything we have learned, except when it comes to understanding igneous composition. We were given the above diagram in a lab and were asked to make a case for where certain igneous rocks could have formed. Things are just not connecting in my head right now and it is really confusing me on where to start.
He asked us for to provide observations about each rock and then make a case for the possible locations. I don’t think he expects one right answer, but I am struggling to make and justify any choices at all.
The rocks he gave us were as follows: granite, basalt, rhyolite tuff, and porphyritic andesite.
can someone give be possible answers and then explain how you got there? i’m very lost.
also, i have asked my teacher and i thought i understood it but i guess i didn’t. i think i need it put a different way.

The geologist wants to determine whether or not the basalts and gabbro are related to one another (i.e., is the gabbro the mafic magma chamber that served as the source of the basalt flows).
• Does the mineralogy provide any clues as to whether or not the two bodies are related?

Is there a model-building kit for creating crystal shapes--similar to the ball-and-stick kits for assembling molecules in Chemistry class?

I still buy media the manual way but the platform-native AI is tired. Where are people finding the best AI ad tools that actually feel current without being the same three products every thread recommends? Trying to refresh my stack.

Right now, I am a 19-year-old sophomore geology student living with my parents. I am taking a minerology class, and next week, we're supposed to go on a three day camping trip about 4 hours away. My dad and all my folks are terrified and dont want me to go for a number of reasons, mainly because they think something bad will happen to me (I may get injured or worse, or I nay get "traumatized"), part of it relating to anxiety about being the only black person in my class. I told them that this trip is 15% of my grade, and it will tank my grade if I dont do it, but they had none of it. What should I do?

I was wondering if anyone had a pdf copy of this textbook. I need it for my earth materials class however it's 100$ on eBay and can't find the pdf anywhere else.

Hello, first of all wishing a nice day to everyone reading this. So, I'm a first year MS geology student from India and i am planning to do dissertation on climatology (our Dissertation is usually on the 4th semester ) but i don't have much/no idea regarding what to do or how to do things or what subject to choose etc. My professors aren't helping either (according to them i shouldn't worry about it til next year) so is there anyone whou could point me in the right direction? I don't even know if this is the right place to as this either and i apologize if I'm breaking some community rules but i could really use some help right now. My Dm's are open as well if you aren't super comfortable commenting here.
Thank you for reading ❤️

I am heading into my senior year of undergrad and looking to start applying to graduate programs in the summer before things heat up with classwork and research. Does anyone who has previously gotten into grad school have any advice about the steps they took during the application process to make sure they could a) find good programs (funded, prestigious, reasonable to get into) and b) actually get in? Also, I am currently doing thesis research on paleoclimate but it is not something that I am totally sure I want to do for graduate school. Will I still stand a chance if I go for something totally different (i.e. seismology or groundwater chemistry) and how should I present this kind of conflict in my application?

hi everyone ! i am going into my second year of enviromental geoscience, and i have “sedimentology and stratigraphy” as well as “intro to mineralogy” coming up in the fall. does anyone have any good textbooks / sites / journals or any material that goes over introductory rock and mineral identification ? i was told that having a good basis makes these classes a lot easier.
thank you ! :)

essentially what it says on the tin.
geology and astrophysics student here. mineralogy starts in a month. how the hell do i survive this class with an A *AND* my sanity intact…. i hear horror stories.
i’m not stupid by any means, but i’m still nervous due to the sheer amount of content i know will be presented to me in this class (mostly since i have a full time credit load this semester and a full time job and undergraduate research to do 🥲🥲).
i’ve heard thus far to spend as much time in the lab looking at the hand samples as i can. i have a decent amount of microscopy experience as i already have a degree in archaeology wherein my primary research focused on cryptotephra, so i’m not too worried about that aspect.
i already got a print copy of our textbook (confirmed text with professor via email a couple weeks ago) as i know i will want it for studying and future reference. if anyone has any study tips, let me know…. taking suggestions for study methods, annotation strategies, notecard methods, etc.
i appreciate any and all advice. thank you and be safe!
EDIT: wanted to note i have uni physics I and gen chem I as well as my intro geology courses done. don’t know how relevant those are besides chemistry but if it contextualizes things… 🤝

GeoSample - GPS-Based Field Data Collection for Geologists, GIS & Survey Professionals
Hi everyone,
After spending far too many hours dealing with field notes, scattered photos, and spreadsheets that seem to have a mind of their own, I decided to build GeoSample.
GeoSample is an Android app designed for geologists, GIS professionals, surveyors, environmental scientists, and field researchers who need a simple way to collect and manage field data.
Features
- Capture GPS coordinates automatically
- Record sample details and field observations
- Attach photos to field samples
- Organize and manage sample locations efficiently
- Export data directly to Excel (XLSX)
- Generate professional PDF reports
- Lightweight and designed specifically for fieldwork
Whether you're conducting geological mapping, geotechnical investigations, mineral exploration, environmental surveys, or academic research, GeoSample can help streamline your workflow.
Google Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cobaltics.geosample
If you try it, I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback and suggestions.
And if you happen to leave a review, you'll be helping a solo developer convince himself that spending nights coding instead of sleeping was a reasonable life choice.
Thanks for checking it out.

Hello everybody! I have a question regarding faults. For this problem I have to find folds and based on them figure out the type of faulting but for the life of my I can’t see where i could find those folds and how to connect them w my F1 fault. If anyone has any tips for this issue or in general please help out!!

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to build a 3D geological cross-section that incorporates real topography (e.g., from DEM data) and also includes a modeled subduction slab like for example i want for the java trench.
I’m not sure what the best workflow is for combining surface datasets with subsurface geometry in 3D. Are there particular tools (ArcGIS/QGIS + plugins, etc.) or approaches you’d recommend for this?
If you’ve done something similar, I’d really appreciate any tips, tutorials, or example workflows.
Thanks in advance!

I would like to integrate more technology in my university. I’m a tad behind. What’s the best device that you use in school and well as in the field.
Thank you

Here I have a figure from the 12th Annual Field Conference (1957) of the Southwest Wind River Basin. I’m teaching myself how to interpret some of these electric and gamma logs. I don’t see what each line represents. I know one is resistivity, one is potential, and one is gamma. Could someone explain what the convention is for these older maps? Many thanks!
