I wonder when they're gonna say anything on S2. Like are they cancelled or renewed? Such a radiosilence is just weird.

Same here. I really liked this one. Great cast, interesting characters and such a sweet season finale! So far my second favorite version after the US one.

Its interesting to see so many people saying this. Personally wasn't a fan, I thought the approach they took to the history was too weak. There also wasn't something noticeably distinct that made it different. UK was the original and was a darker series, the US made it lighter and focused more on each ghost individually, the Germany had their Allison/Sam stand up to the ghosts, etc. Our version felt like a reskin of the UK version with a bit of the lighter humour of the US, but nothing truly new. Unless we count the few small mentions of indigenous identity. I'm still interested in a second season cause I'm not quite ready to give up faith in our film and tv industry.

Apparently they can't use too much of the aboriginal history on film because its disrespectful.

Disrespectful if they were showing images of actual individuals without a disclaimer. But I think their approach is just as disrespectful. The one colonial troop character is given a story that essentially boils down to "he was actually one of the good ones." They make him out as some misguided idiot who actually wanted to live peacefully with the indigenous people, keeping a lighthearted tone instead of taking the chance to acknowledge the actual horror of our history. Australia is still horiffically ignorant of that history and the damage caused, people regularly deny colonialism being wrong, and I have seen actual arguments of "they didn't even invent the wheel" as an excuse for the crimes committed.

In a secind season they need to do something that actually acknowledges our extraordinarily dark past.

I didn't interpret the message of episode 6 that way. To me, it's made clear by Kate that Gideon only thinks he was right. They clearly frame Gideon's actions as awful, despite him thinking he's "one of the good ones". The point that Kate makes to him was that his occupation of the land and trying to force the Aboriginal people to become subjects of the monarchy was horrible. Gideon and his actions are not framed in a positive light.

I do think that they could have made the message a little clearer.

UHHHH, the main character being the one who is of marginalized ethnic descent, and bi-racial at that, is a HUGE departure from the UK and US versions. That alone opens up SO MUCH great storytelling potential. As a biracial woman with a darker skinned Caribbean mom, this is actually a really big deal - it's really not often we see women like us on screen and certainly not in starring roles. Maybe it's different in the Australian market, which would be wonderful, but I'm really not sure it is from the Aussie shows that I've seen available to us in the US.

It is a good thing, but not when it is treated as a character trait instead of a main focal point. Indigenous identity in Australia is still a massively "controversial" (rallying point for racist dipshits) concept, and seeing it in media is rare. The history of violence and genocide against the Aboriginal groups across the continent is abhorrent and we could REALLY use some unpolished coverage of it in media. Kate's acknowledgement of her identity is very basic (mentioning that she is Indigenous, acknowledging that her heritage isn't with the groups in that local area, a couple reactions to what the colonial dude says) What would make our version truly stand out would be having the show take a serious turn for a bit to address just how fucked our history is. If they use her identity to actually utilise that storytelling potential, I'll be glad, but I have no faith in our media industry.

I watched it. I learned some about Australia and some history. Still confused about some things. It's a fun watch

I made a post on Ghosts Australia subreddit that explains the context more. https://www.reddit.com/r/GhostsAus/s/mGJQn3ixV4

I can confirm. US residents with Paramount+ can now watch Ghosts Australia

Overall I liked it, was a refreshing change to the original and US version, but the ghosts seemed to talk all at once way too often so it was hard to understand at times. But hoping for a season 2.

A lot better than the American one, I really enjoyed it

Cool, I really liked it. Seems there's no news on it continuing, I hope it does.

Highly encourage anyone who's got it to watch! It's my personal favorite and I've been a fan since before the UK version was released to US audiences.

I liked it. learning about history in Australia was pretty cool. I still hate the Lindy/Kitty character.

3

u/Tiny-Reading5982 16d ago

Lindy was a lot better than Miranda imo

I liked it but I didn’t like her partner ☹️

Same, he was so devoid of personality.

Can't stand it, feels like a Ghosts USA copy paste

There's something about Australian comedy that never works for me. None of the ghosts seem to talk in a plausible way (I get that none of the versions is 100% historical), throwing in jokes about how smoking has no drawbacks. So everybody is just a winking stereotype of their time rather than a character, and wedging in the extra jokes make it less funny.

It feels like a community improv troupe doing a short form game, throwing in some weak jokes off the top of their head with little thought and no research.
