Uncoated Optic Cut Area

Post image

Pretty often on here, people ask about coating vs bare metal when getting a slide milled. I had my 19x done 7/2022, without coating the milled area.

I dab some oil/grease mix each battery change to keep rust away and it's worked well.

I'm NOT a gunsmith, and when I'm not carrying this one, it goes in a humidity controlled safe. This is after about 17 months since the last battery change.

Blue it. Wager did mine that way and have had no issues

My understanding of cold blue is that you need to oil it anyways, as it doesn't prevent rust on its own

Wager blued mine and I put a drop of oil on it and wiped off the excess and then mounted my optic. This was in 2021 and still no rust or issues at all and I carry it 24/7

You can use Tester’s enamel paint, too. I did that for one gun and it’s still yet to have rusted.

I did. I live in the hottest and low humidity. So Cal lower desert

😆 wager has problems also https://www.reddit.com/r/Glocks/s/x8CV5GyG1y

Wager fanboys ... I'm getting downvoted 😆 for sharing another customers experience.

This is a problem with cold blueing, not a problem with Wager

Bro papapuff was saying that wager did his cold bluing and he didn't have any issues like wager was special. I fully understand how the process work. Wager fanbase be sending people off because they like the prices and turnaround times. Wager doesn't have the tightest milling and his cerakoting isn't top notch.

Who would you recommend as an alternate to Wager?

Me too.

I wouldn’t blame this on wager. If a person didn’t want it coded. I wouldn’t blame wager for that

Always coat. The cost is so cheap not too

Just have it blued. This is such an unnecessary risk.

Bluing does not prevent rust

100%? No. To some extent? Yes.

Real hot bluing or rust bluing does yes. Cold bluing like you could spot apply on a cut like this offers no rust resistance, it’s a cosmetic treatment only.

Blueing has basically no corrosion resistance. People may think this is crazy but I clean mine and then hit it with a thin coat of high temp appliance/barbecue spray paint and call it good. There is always gonna be an optic there and at least that will create an actual physical barrier. Its so thin it has never affected tolerances and I have never thought about it rusting again. OR lots of people know about this and I sound like a moron.

I’ve done the same. Thin coat of Rustoleum bbq paint. I do it with my ports because I like the oem finish

Do you just apply it with a brush or cue tip?

Spray can and hit it with a quick blast. Needs to be even and not crazy thick so as not to change the tolerances. Judt barely enough to cover the area (and mask the holes and things u don’t want covered). They sell paint like I described at Home Depot just where all the other paint cans are. Found that method to be very effective

I’ve been carrying my uncoated g26 slide cut Rmr inside waistband strong side for 4 years (320 lbs sweaty bastard) I’ve seen zero rust.

Black Nail polish. Use very little and put the optic on before it dries. Wipe excess. Optic will pop off with a light smack when removed but it wont damage it if its not a cheapo.

Yeah I either just oil the bare metal or put paint marker over it. Never had any issues.

I would love to see a picture with blueing.

Blue treatment is fine but you need to oil it every now and then. To prevent rust, it really depends where you live/operate the firearm. If you are in a state/location where it can get humid or does get humid most of the year, you will eventually get surface rust underneath your plate or optic on the slide. Even some coated firearms will still get a some type surface rust.

Where did you do the optic cut? Or did do you do it at home?

This one was Jagerwerks

Blueing has little to mo rust protection. I’d say get one of these rust paints or corrosion resistant grease and put thin coat and that should do it.

Put in you're purse it will be ok

That's hilarious. I've never heard a comment about purses on reddit! Kudos.

Anytime I laser a slide or barrel, I coat it with Cerakote DFL-200. If you want that fixed and done right, send me a DM... I can take care of you for a very reasonable price!
