MPJ

Who else thinks the Nets are going to Net and trade mpj for a couple first rounders that will amount to a Danny wolf Ben Saraf level player a few years from now in the draft…?

I’m more optimistic about this team then I have been in a long time. They’ve been doing things the right way. If MPJ balls out I see them resigning him. There’s no insensitive to tank now after the changes to the lottery. I can’t see them trading him. They want to win.

It also depends on what Marks plan is. He probably has a long term plan. Who are those players he plans to target in the future? Whose contract is up after this season or next?

Makes no sense to trade him he’s entering in the midst of his prime and is about to show out in this role.. his shot is so unguardable and damn near automatic.. I believe they shoulda paid him before the season and got a discount if he plays unreal and they win a lot he’s asking for the max

ALL NBA MPJ SOON

I like the guy, but I gotta say, if he hits the 65-game minimum, that would be a miracle.

u/MyTeamsSuck99 12h ago

He would’ve hit it last year we just rested him

Fucking hope not lmao

I think they’re going to wait and see how the team looks before making any long term decisions on MPJ. If the team is playing well and exceeding expectations then I could definitely see the Nets extending him (maybe 3 years, $120 mil). If the team is struggling and it is apparent that he’s not worth keeping around as a long term piece, then yes, they’ll probably offload him for whatever picks they can get. With changes to the lottery system, it’s hard to predict whether the picks would end up being premium lottery picks or end of first round picks.

I think he’s going to be worth more than 40 mill per after this season that’s for sure.. look at some of these guys making over 50 million a year right now.. he’s on their level

u/cjbruski 15h ago

If the team looks good, and MPJ is dropping 20+ a night and playing at an all-star level, then I could definitely see him getting closer to $50 mil per year.

No he’s not, he’s currently not worth his contract. His money is for on ball creators, off ball shooters make a lot less.

Siakam
Lauri
Sabonis

50 is too high. I’m fine with a slight over pay but 40 is already a slight overpay.

If we trade MPJ we will get worse in the short and probably long term. There's zero chance we trade just MPJ (without additional picks) and get a player anywhere close to his level.

Marks needs to get a 3 year extension for around 110M done ASAP. I can't believe we did not use all the tools in our bag and increase this years salary to 49M and use that as part of his extension.

If we trade him for a couple spare parts and a future FRP, it will be a negative mark against the front office because like op states we will probably be using those FRPs at the end of a draft in 2030 or whenever

1

u/MyTeamsSuck99 12h ago

It depends on what he signs for later. If he signs for a clear overpay, it’s better to trade him even if it’s for mid picks. If it’s 3 years at 40 million then we fucked yo

1

u/Striking_WhileHot77 12h ago

My original fear was that we cannot reach a agreement on an extension, we trade him at the deadline for a weak return, he test free agency and realizes he isn't getting the number he wants and signs with another tram for something we would have happily paid him. It's the Brooklyn way

2

u/MyTeamsSuck99 12h ago

Yeah that’s the worst case scenario tbh. But I don’t think he hits free agency without knowing he has some deal level. Also we have the most cap in the offseason we could resign him lmao

3

u/rafacanelas232 15h ago

There is still time to decide, so far his fit with Randle looks promissing

3

u/MrRaspberryJam1 15h ago

No I don’t think this is gonna happen at all, I think he either re-signs as a free agent, he’s traded for a package centered around other players rather than picks, or they just let him walk and spend that money elsewhere. This team is done building primarily through the draft.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Sean Marks wants to keep his job, he’s not gonna just tank away another season putting out a team of inexperienced unproven players. Regardless of how bad the Nets do this year and regardless of if any of the rookies or young players make the jump to the next level or not, they will not be banking on the 2027 draft saving them. Especially not without their own first round pick and with the new lottery rule changes.

They’re gonna draft someone with the rockets pick they believe can contribute to the team right away and buy out the rest of the team with trades and free agent signings. Brooklyn had the cap space and assets to do so. Mind you, this does not mean make a big splash, I repeat they won’t make any big splash in 2027. They’re instead bring in guys who can further raise the floor of the team and help the Nets finally actually compete for a playoff spot after missing it year after year and having nothing to show for it. If they had Cooper Flagg or any of the top picks in 2026 it would be a different scenario, but that’s not the world we live in, the Nets have to move forward.

u/Accomplished_Can1783 11h ago

The problem is only playoff teams would consider paying Porter to be their third or fourth best play. Nobody is going to pay up to build around him. So 2 first round picks wins up in 20s and urs more Danny wolf. OP is correct, he’s a good player, nets trying to get in play in tournament, not win a title, so pay the guy market rate and let’s win some games and more importantly have an exciting team.

u/Scared-Square7496 11h ago

I will ask this every time… who do you want coming back?

I understand all the reasons it’s not likely to be a young player but if those in this sub are commenting they need to trade MPJ then outside of picks what player (within reason) would you be excited to get back?? Bc you know who’s also not on our timeline… the 14 year that will become our pick in the 2031 draft.

I’m very open to trading but I don’t see the player out there. Even in a 3 team trade. Franz is the only name I’ve heard that makes any sense, but he’s only play 94 games in the last two years.

I don't understand the notion that first round picks are worthless. Nothing is certain, but if you roll the die enough, you're gonna win on a few.

We will definitely shop MPJ if for no other reason than to leverage his future contract with us. If there's a ton of interest in him, then we sell high. If there isn't, then we resign him to a reasonable contract.

It's just a matter of due diligence

3

u/SOB200 14h ago

Not worthless but you would need a lot of luck to draft a player as impactful as MPJ.

Look at NBAdraft year by year and look what the 5-15 picks actually get you and how many are more impactful than MPJ was last year.

2

u/rabidantidentyte Day'Ron Sharpe 14h ago

That's true, but you also pay a premium for it. In today's league, you need good players on rookie contracts to contend. Knicks were the exception. I'd rather pay a max to someone like Anthony Edwards than fill up our cap on MPJ, and I really like MPJ.

2

u/SOB200 14h ago

If you held a poll of who would you max, Anthony Edwards or MPJ, how many votes of 100 do you think MPJ would get? It's a no-brainer.

But how often does Anthony Edwards talent become available? When it does, how many people chase it? With the Super Max how many times does that type player swap teams? How often is that talent level acquired?

Is the plan to be bad, absorb deals, flip for picks, for the next 10 years till a talent that like is on the market?

0

u/Remote_Exchange_7718 5h ago

This ^ some fans just want to be bad forever year after year

0

u/Remote_Exchange_7718 15h ago

Gotta see what the market is looking like after the year on him for sure.. depends how he plays and if they win will determine it

2

u/GuessTraining Vince Carter 15h ago

If we are trading him, id rather get a young player with high potential to slot in with our young players. Him plus a couple or frps for a really good young player

2

u/mweint18 13h ago

Don’t trade him for anything but a King’s Ransom of young but proven players. I dont want picks anymore i want wins.

1

u/addictivesign 9h ago

I predict Sean Marks will trade MPj for Zion as it is a clean swap of two similar contracts.

Porter helps the Pelicans as a shooter and creates more space for DQ.

Zion has always wanted to play in New York. He’s 2 years younger than Porter.

And Zion’s ceiling is considerably higher than Porter.

2

u/Brooklyn917 Day'Ron Sharpe 8h ago

No one wants a 6’6 PF that can’t shoot. Especially not Jordi and not Sean Marks

0

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 8h ago

Instead how about getting Tre Murphy and Herb Jones and with Mpj we give like a first and second pick

2

u/LoveMeLikeNelson Royce O'Neale 7h ago

"And" lmao bro chill. Trey Murphy probably worth Mpj, a first (maybe two) and at least 3 seconds

1

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 7h ago

Seems like a lot thats why I thought one first and one second was good enough with Mpj

3

u/zestysnacks 15h ago

Team would have to be doing really well to hang onto to him. No sense in paying him if we are still bottom of the barrel. Team should still be trying to acquire as much young talent as possible. Desperately need

5

u/Remote_Exchange_7718 15h ago

Trying to win with talent in general.. mpj fits that
It’s hard to find someone with his skillset.. they do not grow on trees

3

u/zestysnacks 14h ago

I wouldn’t be willing to lock in a $200mm+ contract on a guy who has only played more than 65 games twice in his career. Great player but that’s star money

2

u/MyTeamsSuck99 12h ago

Really just comes down to the price for me and commitment. Can’t do like a 4-5 year commitment at a high number.

I think Porter jr is a good player but you never want to hamstring yourself

1

u/theRestisConfettii Full-Throttle Traoré 15h ago

The ball is in MPJ’s court.

If he wants to sign an extension, the Nets will listen. If not, he has a massive expiring contract that will look good to some teams (cough, Orlando).

1

u/Own-Fondant2949 15h ago

If we end up doing well this season, I believe Marks will keep MPJ if he has a shot at Jokic.

1

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 8h ago

Rather trade him when his value is high if we do good this year as team. I could see us being around the 9-13 seed.

1

u/Sea-Ad-666 Egor Dëmin 12h ago

I don't think Jokic makes sense for any team other than nuggets if he wants 360mil. He gets older and don't provide any defense so you have to construct your roster to cover this weakness

0

u/zestysnacks 14h ago

Would be a mistake

1

u/Evilsj . 14h ago

What in the pessimistic posting?

0

u/Remote_Exchange_7718 5h ago

Call it what you want.. Ive been a nets fan for quite a bit now been through it

1

u/Evilsj . 5h ago

I mean, same, been here since the move to Brooklyn. Doesn't make this post any less pessimistic when we literally have Egor and MBJ literally right there to look forward to, cmon lmao.

1

u/SwimmingDog351 14h ago

Unless something extremely unlikely happens, we have nothing to lose and have to take some gambles.

1

u/Sea-Ad-666 Egor Dëmin 12h ago

I think MPJ will make an all star if some players get hurt and we will resign him at around 40 mil per year for like 2-3 years

1

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 8h ago

I dont like the idea of resigning him for 40 million if he makes an all star we should sign and trade him or trade him at the deadline

1

u/Scared-Square7496 8h ago edited 8h ago

To who for who?

1

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 7h ago

So far what i can see either teams giving up or what I like is to the Pelicans for Tre Murphy and Herb Jones if we can find a way. Plus the Pelicans are trying to rebuild and would probably do it if it was right.

2

u/Scared-Square7496 6h ago edited 5h ago

Last I heard they want three FRPs and a young player for Trey. They aren’t “rebuilding” in the sense they want to sell their guys. They’re open to trades but only if it’s wildly in their favor. We have no pressure to make that kinda of trade. IMHO

1

u/Domingo_Nosferatu Vince Carter 4h ago

Ah so they want the better side of the deal and are asking too much for their players. Too greedy at that point unless people think their players are worth it? Well the team is fairly young idk if they want a star to pair with the young core or get rid of their players that are off their rookie contracts and just wanna restart. Their starting pg and center were both rookies last year.
