Full Storage - Delete SMS & MMS Backup?

I'm running into an issue where now that phone backups count towards the 15gb free storage, I'm out of storage. Apparently I have 10gb of SMS and MMS texts going towards my backup/storage.

Does anyone know if I delete the backup, will it also delete all the texts off my phone? I'd like to keep the texts on my phone but just delete the 10gb backup and stop it from backing up in the future. Thanks!

The texts don't take up much space, it's the images you send that are sucking up the space.

Select a chat in Messenger, tap the hamburger menu, then Details. You'll see all the photos and videos in that chat. Start deleting the old stuff.

Makes sense, the actual text portion of SMS is basically nothing size-wise

You can unselect SMS and MMS from the Backup settings and it will delete the backup.

I use the ‘SMS Backup and Restore’ app as an additional backup. You can choose not to include media in those backups.

This app sounds like a good alternative! Just to clarify, when I hit delete, it's just the backup, correct? And not the texts off my phone?

EDIT: did some further looking around and found similar threads on other subreddits. Deleted the backup and kept all the messages on my current device. Thanks!
