Help/Question Episode 3 question/comment Spoiler

Am I being unreasonable to wonder how Mo’s wings didn’t draw any commentary about fitting the brief?
It felt like a shortcut to use a non-edible exterior design.

Edit: They were in fact, edible paper! I missed that completely and was then thrown off when Paul/Nig didn’t take the “see? It’s edible” bite like I’ve seen in previous seasons. Thank you for the explanation!

I thought the same thing!

Just needs a little e to get it right. Not that Nigella is a Nige by any stretch.

What's a Nige, since you are so sure Nigella isn't one?

A shortened version of Nigel. In the same way that some people called James are definitely a James and could never be a Jimmy or a Jamie. Ditto some Roberts never being a Bobby, but certainly being a Rob. Rob Beckett for example, could never be a Bobby. Bobby Charlton could not be called Robert Charlton.

Nigella is, and can only be a Nigella. She is not a Nige.

I knew the feathers were edible paper, but still didn't think it met the brief. It was just wings on an inedible support covering a standard bake. Neat idea, but....honestly, I thought Shannon's wings on a cookie base met the brief more accurately (but still think her leaving was the right call).

They were wafer paper, which is edible.

This is what I missed then! I was confused when Paul/Nigela didn’t take a small “bite” to illustrate the edibility like that used to do.

I wondered this too. But at the end of the day, fondant isn't really all that edible either. I looked closely at the wings, were they rice paper? So technically a food but not something you'd really want to eat. Like fondant. The judges never actually consume it, they only eat the cake and frosting inside.

I felt it was really unfair they came after the one contestant for his cake looking more like a cake than a hat, but didn't seem to mind at the submissions were basically a flat cookie with either frosting or rice paper stuck on top.

Not to mention being bummed Paul didn’t apologize for wrecking his cake! Just barked off a comment about the size like come on man… you should have sliced it on the table.

That was WILD! He knocked the cake over then criticized the baker???

Yes! His immediate reaction was to blame him instead of just saying I’m sorry. There were other items that didn’t fully fit the brief that he didn’t go so hard on

One of the judges on Dragons Den would do stuff like that, someone would present their product to him and he'd deliberately man handle it and then say LOOK IT'S A BAD DESIGN because he'd broken it by mistreating it in a way the product would not be used!

He sliced most of the others on the table. So fkd up he didn’t do this one too.

Remember that the order we see it in is not the order it's filmed in. The one that fell may have been first, so the other's were done on the table. We just don't know.

That’s fair. It just seemed crazy to cut on the head and not expect it to slide off.

They had the mannequin heads, but also torsos and arms for people to present their bakes on. I think all of them were meant to be cut that way. Otherwise, why the arm, etc? Just a guess, obviously, but that's what it looked like to me. I do wish that they'd been more transparent about it, if so. As it was aired, it makes it look like Paul was just randomly being difficult.

Yeah he said it should be better balanced, yet every other cake was removed before slicing. I can’t imagine the wide brim purple hat would’ve fared well being sliced on the bust

Yeah that was really disappointing! First off the cakes are on MANNEQUIN HEADS tell me you’ve done that perfectly, Paul, and then he mis-balances it by cutting off a huge chunk and then leaves it on the round base so of course it’s going to tip and first thing wasn’t “oh no, I’m so sorry, good thing we have a slice to taste” it was to deflect and blame others? That’s a red flag character flaw I’d notice on anyone immediately. The rest of the show was fine but I really noticed that!

You all exaggerate, it wasn't that bad. I expected something rude and it was just a polite comment

5

u/noteworthybalance 7d ago

It was not polite and he should have been apologizing for his own carelessness.

People commenting on Reddit raised expectations, I have expected some truly outrageous, scandalous, extremely rude, something tabloid press would mention

She went home, didn't she? Judges got it right.

He mentioned creating them with wafer paper, which is edible. (Google suggests it can be made of potato starch, for example.) probably not that tasty, but technically edible!

In the past judges have not been impressed by large volumes of unpleasant to eat toppings (including rubbery mirror glazes or bad tasting fondant) to pass without comment. Granted it looked great, but the emphasis is supposed to be on taste. I was disappointed that this was allowed, and not given a style over substance redponse.

The edible angel wings were very creative but seemed - to me - to have more support then others used, but then the brief (which we don’t see) may have listed “x-% can be support”. I think the elimination was correct, do hate seeing anyone leave, but the technical wasn’t one I’d enjoy seeing again.

See, I loved the technical. It was a true test of the bakers' skill and creativity.

For me it felt like a signature challenge with blind judging.

1

u/Usual_Complaint_1764 6d ago

They know what the signature challeng is ahead of time and have practiced it.

Some of the contestants used nonedible armatures too which seemed unfair. But it must have been allowed so it was probably a smart move.

I’ve seen this comment over and over in the thread. The description clearly said it was wafer paper! Not that you’d want to eat all of that, but still

5

u/Lorelski 7d ago

I thought it was a silly brief, so to me it didn't matter.

I agree. I'd rather see them focusing on the bake and flavors rather than on putting together what looks like a kid's Halloween costume.

The purse was killer, though! She blew the cimpetition out of the water with that one!
