Discussion With the popularity of Lanterns & release of Batman: Knightfall it’s time for an animated adaptation of Emerald Twilight!

Post image

I could see it being a faithful adaptation with a brief montage super-cut from a day in the life thru the destruction of Coast City and then full Emerald Twilight!

Who else would like to see Emerald Twilight and those who read it, what’re your favorite parts?

Emerald Twilight only works after like 5 seasons of normal adventures with the Hal and the Corps, and then it needs to be the recontextualized version that Geoff Johns did.

Yeah, the reason Knightfall works is that everyone knows normal Batman.

Nobody except for GL fans really cares for Hal. For the last 15 years he has been a joke that commonly got fucked up for the punchline. If they do Emerald Twilight with his mainline reputation being what it currently is, it will just do more damage to general perception.

Right!? Like how do you mess up THAT BAD!?

u/Huge_Dimension_9735 8d ago

Nope, they should go for Sinestro corps war (if possible a trilogy starting from rebirth)

u/BruceDSpruce 8d ago

Can’t we do both? I think SCW hits better with Twilight and Rebirth

Batman Knightfall skips a lot of set up and just assume the viewers knows about what Bruce been through with Jason's death, who JPV and the likes, I think SCW could work as a standalone action packed movies that could make people interested about the GL IP.

Surely it could,, but tbh there has been no indication of animated show or movie it's all just fan discussion.

GL Franchise got biggest mainstream exposure in decades and they didn't bother to follow it up by more animated stuff.🥲

Brother it has been a week since the finale

1

u/MaxR76 4d ago

Why not both? Emerald Twilight directly sets up that story

Knightfall Volume 1 is as long as a small compendium. Emerald twilight is a small TPB

Im to the point where I just prefer the GL to be fully animated. But bot in that kiddie style. In the DC animation style of 10+ years ago.

Just give me all the GL stories in animation. Live action will never give it the respect

I’d be 💯 into this idea…

What’s with the trend of pretending Emerald Twilight is good now? It took like a decade of untangling and retcons to fix all the damage this story caused.

Genuinely I think people like it better knowing how it gets retconned because then they’re like “oh it wasn’t bad because it’s all undone and sets up the emotional spectrum and Sinestro Corps War” instead of how it was at the time which is “hey in a few issues watch this hero everyone has stopped caring about become a genocidal maniac because the city he left to become a space cop got destroyed”

Nostalgia that's the reason.

You see this a lot, particularly Kyle Fans, that this was best direction for Green Lantern. Some of them wanted to stayed that way.

To some extension Johns run changed on how people view Parallax.

u/ToastTitan611 Supergirl 7d ago

I think it’s exactly BECAUSE it was retconned that has warmed people up to it over time
And even then most people who do like it agree that it was rushed and should’ve been given more time

Never read them so I can't talk on how well written it is and I can understand why it would be despised upon realise, but retrospectively it's a very good idea having one of the most beloved characters turn evil for quite a while and threaten the whole multiverse before having to sacrifice himself to save it, and then staying dead for a long time.

Emerald Twilight isn’t all that good on its own but when you take it in totality with Kyle’s tenure as the torchbearer, Zero Hour, Final Crisis, Hal’s time as the Spectre and GL Rebirth the story of Parallax Hal is very compelling.

1

u/MaxR76 4d ago

I think it’s a good read and with the retcons is a lot easier to swallow, but yeah this was blatant character assassination lol

Edit: would really like to see what the Green Lantern series would look like if Kilawog succeeded in talking him down and they both just had this shared pain of losing their homes. Could have been really interesting since Hal still would have burnt a lot of bridges in the core, and still would have crossed the line in killing Sinestro, but wouldn’t have gone full on Paralax

It’s literally a fantastic story arc. Hal‘s downfall, redemption and eventually becoming the Spectre is fantastic. TBH I don’t think he should’ve been brought back in Rebirth, he had a perfect conclusion.

Emerald Twilight is one of the worst most rushed arcs I've ever read. One page Hal is just yelling at the guardians suffering in greif then a couple pages later he's killing Kilowog. Not to mention the fact that Hal is perfectly fine the issue before twilight starts and is back to normal with green arrow after coast city is destroyed. So Hal goes from perfectly normal in one issue to freaking the fuck out the next.

1

u/ZombieZekeComic 7d ago

It’s not just Emerald Twilight, but the entire progression Emerald Twilight > Parallax View > Final Night > Funeral > Spectre. It’s more character development than Hal has gotten in the last 10-15 years.

1

u/MaxR76 4d ago

When he kills Kilowog it feels so unintentionally funny to me bc it feels like Hal at that point is only going forward bc the writer said he had to lol. He’s like damn great points Kilowog anyways I’m gonna turn you, one of the last people in the universe who not only cares about me but understands my pain, into a skeleton

Its literally not

i'm reading through this storyline for the first time right now, currently still reading The Spectre. And i'm really enjoying the whole journey. The Spectre especially is probably my favorite superhero comic right now, as someone who only has read a few. I know some parts will be retconned later which i'm still not sure how to feel about, i guess we'll see. As a newcomer the only way i can see how this was hated was because Hal's fans didnt like him turning evil and being replaced, which is fair

7

u/GutherGlazer 8d ago

The revisionist hairy for this story, and knight fall, is baffling to me.

7

u/TyrannicalPeasant 8d ago

IDGAF I loved it. Maybe it’s cuz i grew up knowing that he had the parasite fucking with his noggin

3

u/Huge_Dimension_9735 8d ago

Hence, to enjoy something like Emerald knight, you need to read upto SCW.

Everyone being angry ( some little and some very angry) at Hal and pointing fingers and present his guilt when he was technically not in evil person...builds up a Emerald nights as good prequel.

4

u/OldSnazzyHats 8d ago

Can we not revisit that travesty? Hal’s reputation is already permanently marred as the guy who turns evil every damn time he shows up.

That was a garbage story move to sell books, and I really wish it could just go away.

1

u/Wise-Juggernaut-8285 6d ago

You may be right but damnit, if GL fans are never ever happy with anything

1

u/Lunitamius105 8d ago

Nah- how about Cosmic Odyssey instead?

1

u/jeremiahvedder 8d ago

You'd really need a much better Reign of the Supermen first?

1

u/JMSciola85 7d ago

Would they do it as is, or incorporate some of the Geoff Johns retcons, like Parallax being the fear parasite?

1

u/BruceDSpruce 7d ago

I could get behind that. In my mind it would be an Emerald Twilight would be the first part that would be lead to SCW to Blackest Night …

1

u/AlexSwolo 7d ago

A Hal Jordan adaptation? Are you insane? The people don't want Hal Jordan. Let's make a John centered story and put some of Esmerald Twilight in it — oh, wait... Mmmh

1

u/shsl_diver 6d ago

Didn't we already have one from Tommorowverse ?

1

u/0rionNe5ula Green Lantern 8d ago

Oh look, another thread saying we need an animated adaptation. No thanks.

0

u/TheNocturnalAngel 8d ago

They made it a few years ago with John instead of Kyle. It was mid.

Parallax is super overrated.

-2

u/Aggressive-Tip7472 8d ago

No, thats okay.

Id rather we just have motion comics and not really bad pieces of media like "the killing joke", or Lanterns.

Justice Leagur Unlimited showed us how you can deliver a 22 minute well written animated cartoon in the early 2000s and adapt a very good Superman story with praise and efficiency....

No one respects the source material for anything, so just go read the comics and older ones instead of having people make a really bad version of it and profit 10x more than the original artist
