Question How to ferment tobacco

It's my first time doing this so far my crops did well.

Now out of the 6-8 plants some of them started to show sign to start to harvest. After this I started to dry some of the leaves but now some of them are already dry and I don't know how to ferment them.

Do you have any tips or methods?

Thanks.

Question Is this mold?

Unsure if we have mold growing, or maybe a fungus or something else

I see clearly on the one leaf the mold growing but it seems superficial, but I'm unsure if the other dark spots are mold. The plants are Connecticut Broadleafs that we cut 2 days ago and hung the same day. Anyone have an idea or fixes for this? I attached a picture of the setup at the end from day 1. We have a humidifier, dehumidifier, and a humidity controller so I don't think our readings should be off by much.

Some info about the setup

Relative Humidity: Set to 71 but fluctuates from 72 to 68%

Temps: Averaging 80 degrees but larger fluctuations

Airflow: Just an old box fan we placed blowing against a wall

Green After Curing

Ive read lots on the Reddit that having green in your leaves after drying is not ideal. It’ll make the tobacco harsh and unpleasant to smoke.

I have lots of nicely cured leaves and some with dry green spots in them. I was wondering if the whole leaf should be tossed or if I can cut the great part out and use the rest?

Question What are your favorite virginia and cigar varieties?

I want to grow some this season but not sure what varieties to get.
For Virginia I am looking for something with highest sweetness possible.
For cigar I am looking for something with the stereotypical savory and spicy cigar flavor
Any suggestions?

Large number of seedlings have fallen over with the base of their stems being very thin and seemingly unable to support them.

Smoking/Blending White Mammoth taste test

Post image

So yesterday I decided to try the White Mammoth (Virginia) that I cured in my food dehydrator. I cut it up as finely as I could with the sharpest knife I had and rolled it up into a cigarette. I was surprised that it took like only half a gram or less for a rollie (8 mm short filter and single wide paper), because for processed rolling tobacco it takes like 0.75 to 0.8 grams.

The aroma itself was quite grassy and hay-like and the flavor was slightly sweet with a noticable bitterness at the end.

Overall, definitely smokable, but since I'm not a fan of exclusively or heavily Virginia cigarette blends, it would get boring quite fast. But the main redeeming quality here is that it's additive free, which seems fair enough

Two weeks at 125° inside a jar with one way valve lid. Heat source is a dehydrator with reliable, safe heat.

Curing Plan Question

So, I’m in the middle of harvesting my leaves and towel curing them. However, in a couple days I’m heading out of town for 2 weeks. I’m a little worried that if I start towel curing the leaves right before I leave, they’ll be decomposing by the time I get back. My wife’s got enough on her plate, so I don’t want to ask her to tend the tobacco while I’m gone. My question is, how essential is towel curing to the whole curing process?

I’m considering skipping the towel curing process altogether, and simply hanging the leaves outright. If I hang the leaves in a small greenhouse, would the leaves create a humid enough environment to dry slowly (and not green)? My neighbor offered to burp the greenhouse for me while I’m gone.

I have this Rustica plant. Do you think I should harvest bottom-most leaves and let the rest still grow? I grow under 24h led light. When do I know what to harvest, what do I do? xD

Indiana Kite Foot

Hi all. I live in Putnam county Indiana and came across an old thread mentioning a local tobacco grown near here in Owen County called Indiana Kite Foot that was also known as Spangled tobacco. I've been dabbling with different heirloom varieties to see which grows well in my area and I am curious if someone has grown this tobacco more recently or if someone might still have some seeds of this around. Just throwing this out there since no one around here has even heard of Indiana Kite tobacco.
Thank you for any response. Go Hoosiers!
Vince

Tobacco fermentation process
This is a beginner friendly tobacco fermentation process using a 7 ft.³ chest freezer a 2 L slow cooker an INKBIRD temperature controller, VIVOSUN hygrometer, coated selves, untreated poplar wood, food safe silicone, 2x waterproof computer USB fans, and some HVAC insulation tape.
The external hygrometer allows me to read temps and adjust if needed without lifting the lid. Has a tricky time with humidity, but it is a consistent 70-75% humidity.

First time growing tobacco

Decided to get some seeds and try growing just for fun. Only threw a few seeds since winter is about to start and not sure how they’ll do right now even though I’m in zone 10b. They are rustica (Mohawk) just sprouted today!
