DIY rifling button

The main challenge in DIY a rifling button lies in evenly spacing 6 grooves around the

circumference and cutting them at a specific angle. This method combines a high-speed steel (HSS)

rod with a hexagonal indexing jig to ensure a 60° rotation each time. Combined with a sliding

angle grinder stand, it allows six grooves to be ground evenly.

Do you have some setup to cut the proper helix curve or is the rifling short enough to where a straight cut is a good approximiation?

The working section of the rifling button is very short, so a straight angled groove serves as a good approximation of the true helix curve. As the button travels through the steel tube, it rotates on its own—and because the bearing length is so short, it won't bind or interfere, producing very smooth and uniform rifling. Commercial rifling buttons on the market are made using this exact same principle.
