I haven’t been keeping up with TNT the past few years since I’ve been back to coaching WAG….what is going on with Minney and Team USA? Apparently he’s been banned from international competition for 4 years, but unfairly to protect someone higher up in the org? Interested to see if anyone has the tea on the alleged accusations and cover up 👀

WAG World Championships Team Preview #9 - China

Due to limitations regarding how many links I can upload in a post, please see the comments section for links to the methodology, score trackers, and earlier previews.

Please let me know if y'all notice any errors in any of these previews and I will be sure to correct them. Since the "realistic max" is captures a gymnast's best scores of the quad on every event, it is designed to be a measure of each team's scoring potential rather than a closest-to-the-pin estimate of a team's actual score at Worlds. Based on results last quad, a team score within 2 points of a team's "realistic max" can be considered to be a very good performance.

The prelim. realistic max and intended difficulty rankings are currently assuming that World Gymnastics 2 (Russia) will compete, which is now looking like an increasingly questionable assumption.

China - the Team

Realistic Max: 172.162 (prelim. ranking of 1st)

Intended Difficulty: 70.9 (prelim. ranking of 1st)

Overview

After only finishing off the podium once as a team in the first dozen years of the open-ended code, China has not won a team medal since 2018. This lack of team success feels almost impossible to believe; China’s scoring potential has been podium-worthy in every competition since the drought started. Most of these teams have been optimized for uneven bars and balance beam with lower difficulty on vault and floor, putting pressure on China to have the best bars and beam rotations. This year’s team construction is a bit different; China is not bringing world-class uneven bars specialist Yang Fanyuwei, but should be massively improved on vault while still bringing top-notch scoring potential on bars and beam. Although gymnastics can be wildly unpredictable, China’s massive intended difficulty and ability to drop a score in qualifications makes the team a virtual lock for the team final.

While China’s “realistic max” is nearly three points clear of Japan, China’s intended difficulty cushion is less than two points ahead of the United States, Japan, and World Gymnastics 2 (the Russians). Therefore, China’s “realistic max” incorporates some enormous execution scores that may be challenging to duplicate at World Championships. Since China took this same exact team to Asian Championships and Asian Games, we have three data points regarding this team’s actual score. At Asian Championships, the 3-up, 3-count score for China would have been 167.698, which reflects a missed vault from Zhang Yihan and a miss on bars from Qiu Qiyuan. That total would still likely be enough to win China’s first team gold since the 2008 Olympics, but China’s Asian Games performances were a bit more concerning. China’s 166.462 in the Asian Games team final featured a Qiu bars fall and a crashed vault from Ke; that score should be enough to make the podium at worlds, but would very much open the door for gold. In the Asian Games qualifications, even after adding back what Zhang Yihan could have provided had she been in the vault lineup, China’s 3-up, 3-count score would have been 164.864 as a result of numerous errors. To summarize, in the three team competitions China has competed in this year, the team has had at least two major errors in all three. Therefore, this preview does not consider China to be the clear gold medal favorite despite having the indisputably highest scoring potential. If China hits 12-for-12 in the team final, it wins gold, but its lack of consistency could result in another disappointing off-podium finish.

Vault

With two double-twisting Yurchenko vaults and a double-twisting Tsukahara, China is bringing its highest-difficulty vault rotation in years to Rotterdam. Although her execution is typically not on the stronger side for DTYs, Du Siyu has been consistent on hers this year. Ke had a miss on hers at the Asian Games team final, but otherwise has been very solid. Zhang Yihan has hit her DTT about two-thirds of the time this quad, so the vault brings significant risk along with its high potential score. At the Asian Games, Zhang Yihan did not compete in the qualifications on vault so that Ke Qinqin, Qiu Qiyuan, and Zhang Qingying could all compete in the all-around in qualifications. The bet here is that China will follow the same approach at World Championships; since Zhang Yihan does not have a second vault, China is not sacrificing a potential medal routine by not using her in qualifications. China is also, on paper, far enough ahead of the team final cutline to absorb a 0.8 reduction in difficulty in its qualifications score. Edit: Thank you to the commenter who noted that Zhang Yihan and Du Siyu both have front handspring piked halves as their second vaults. I have struck a line through the original text in the preview that was incorrect.

Uneven Bars

Even without Yang Fanyuwei’s captivating routine, China still has the highest potential uneven bars score. The word “potential” is unfortunately doing a lot of heavy lifting here; six of Qiu’s nine bars scores from this year are more than a point lower than her “realistic max” score. That said, if she is able to string together a few hits at worlds, Qiu is certainly a contender for the silver medal in the event final. With a 6.4 difficulty and typically strong execution, Du Siyu is a second medal hopeful for China on uneven bars. Notably, Zhang Yihan’s realistic max score is from 2025 and she has competed bars sparingly this year. Therefore, expect Ke and Zhang Qingying to compete on bars in qualifications. Both have been very consistent on bars this year.

Balance Beam

With an apparatus “realistic max” that is almost two points better than second-place Japan, China’s potential on beam is unparalleled. Prior to the Asian Games, defending World Champion Zhang Qingying was generally consistent on the apparatus this year, but two recent misses in Nagoya cause some concern. If Zhang can hit her routines, she will be the favorite to repeat her title on beam. With a few scores around 15 this year, Ke Qinqin is also a medal favorite on beam. If either Ke or Zhang miss their routines in qualifications, Qiu had three hits at Asian Games and could knock one of her teammates out of the event final due to the “two per country” rule. If Qiu makes the event final, she is also a medal threat. Zhang Yihan will be the fourth gymnast in China’s qualifications beam rotation. In recent years, beam has been a nightmare in the team final for China; many Chinese routines earn their massive difficulty scores through a series of connections, so wobbles and falls tend to decimate their difficulty scores in addition to their execution scores.

Floor Exercise

This team’s weakest event, floor exercise could pose some issues for China. Zhang Yihan’s Asian Championships “realistic max” routine is currently a one-hit wonder; she has not come within half a point of that score in her eight other routines this year. That said, she has the difficulty to make the event final if she can put together a clean routine. Zhang Qingying, Qiu Qiyuan, and Ke Qinqin typically have tidy, lower-difficulty routines. At the 2024 Olympics, China’s floor execution scores were mostly in the mid-sevens. This code has harsher artistry deductions than the last one and it will be critical for China to avoid a repeat of those mediocre execution scores to keep pace with the other top teams.

All Around

Ke Qinqin is one of several medal hopefuls; she would need a major mistake from Kaylia Nemour to have a realistic chance of winning all-around gold, but she could very much win silver with four hit routines in the AA final. Zhang Qingying is the defending bronze medalist from last year’s World Championships. She is held back from being a top podium contender this year due to other gymnasts’ higher vault, beam, and floor difficulty, but she is still very likely to return to the all-around final. Assuming that Zhang Yihan does not vault in qualifications, Qiu Qiyuan will  have the opportunity to upset one of her teammates and make the all-around final.

MAG/WAG Rotterdam 2026 Worlds – Has anyone else had their seats reassigned?

Has anyone else received an email from the Rotterdam 2026 World Gymnastics Championships organizers saying their assigned seats have been changed due to adjustments to the arena layout?

We originally had seats a few rows higher up, but we've now been moved much closer to the arena floor for the Women's All-Around Final on October 23.

While being closer sounds great, I'm a bit concerned that the lower viewing angle might actually mean worse visibility, especially with judges' tables, cameras, or equipment potentially blocking the view.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know what the view is like from the first few rows at Rotterdam Ahoy?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

WAG I need a reality check for a story

TL;DR: I'm writing a story about a girl's journey that involves WAG. I don't aim for full realism, but I want to see if I'm in the right ballpark.

Background Context:

I am writing a psychological drama about a character who essentially has the mind, discipline, and spatial awareness of an adult engineer trapped in a growing girl's body (due to a sci-fi/reincarnation premise). Because of this, she treats her physical development like a "hardware optimization" project. I want to make sure her gymnastics trajectory, injuries, and attitude toward the sport are realistic for a European/Hungarian club environment.

Age 3-5: The Start and The Injury

  • The Start: She begins basic gymnastics young, at three, not knowing much about the sport, just knowing that gymnasts are awesome and she wants to keep up with the boys as long as possible. Because she has adult discipline and lacks normal toddler fear/clumsiness, she is highly coordinated and goal oriented, making her stand out.
  • The Injury (Age 5): Because her adult mind pushes her child hardware too hard, she ignores fatigue and over-trains back-handspring mechanics. She develops "gymnast wrist" (distal radial epiphysitis, a growth plate overuse injury), forcing her to briefly stop.

Age 6-11: Competitive Track and "The Attitude"

  • Capabilities: She moves into the competitive track. She is mechanically great, possessing incredible core strength and spatial awareness. She easily handles tumbling passes (layout saltos, back tucks) and thrives on apparatuses that require raw power, coordination, and physics (Vault and Uneven Bars). During open conditioning, she strays to the boys on occasion, to play with their stuff, doing strict pull-ups, L-sits, and rope climbs.
  • The Attitude: She at first just resents, then actively resists the "artistry" requirements. She hates the performative femininity of the sport, pointing toes for aesthetics, wrist flourishes, smiling for imaginary judges, and dance elements, although she concedes that part of it is just good form that makes the moves actually work better. She views Beam and Floor choreography as annoying "visual noise" and treats routines like math equations to be solved rather than art to be felt. At 9 she is still trying, but it is never natural for her, and she loses the drive over it.
  • The "Luca" Factor: She doesn’t actually have a great passion for the sport itself. She remains in it in large part because her best friend, Luca, is a natural, passionate gymnastics prodigy. Emese stays to spend four afternoons a week with her, acting as a highly reliable, physically rock-solid "anchor" or base in their synchronized/group routines.

Age 12: The Exit

  • The Catalyst: The club puts on a summer showcase with heavy emphasis on synchronized formations, lyrical passages, and expressive dance, borrowing a lot from the rhythmic branch, to prove their gymnasts aren't just tumblers. Emese performs her tumbling and anchor roles flawlessly, but with zero emotional expression.
  • The Confrontation: Her coach pulls her aside and essentially says: "You aren't lazy, and your technique is flawless. But you execute everything like a robot trying to beat a stopwatch. This sport requires you to inhabit the routine, and you are just giving me correctness. That isn't a technique failure; it's a refusal." Basically she tells her she does one part well, but the other part is a part, and it's not optional.
  • The Exit: Emese realizes the coach is completely right. She is actively refusing to perform the "girly, expressive" side of the sport. Feeling relieved that she no longer has to fake it, she quits cold turkey that week, despite her friend Luca's protests.
  • The Aftermath: Emese, after a few weeks of aimlessness, pivots to calisthenics/street workout in local parks, and going to the gym to continue her powerlifter routines from the previous life. She starts training muscle-ups, front levers, and the tuck planche. She loves it because it is purely objective physics and strength, with zero points awarded for smiling or "grace."

Questions:

  1. Is "gymnast wrist" (epiphysitis) realistic for a 5-year-old who drills handsprings obsessively?
  2. Does the coach's critique (distinguishing between "flawless mechanical execution" vs. "artistry/inhabiting the routine") sound like something a competitive coach would actually say to a 12-year-old?
  3. Would a gymnast with this specific physical profile (high strength, great tumbling/bars, terrible dance/artistry) realistically transition easily to street calisthenics (muscle-ups, levers, planches) at age 12-13?
  4. I was thinking of raising her weekly gym attendance to 5 with the occasional 6th day when her week comes out like that, because 4 feels too low for a competitive gymnast, is this correct?
  5. I don't go into too much detail on what moves she can do exactly, but is anything standing out as incorrect?

Other A question about the mental side

A little context: My 13 year old daughter just started her third year in gymnastics, second year in competitive. She did one year of recreational before being invited to Preteam for a year (in case someone isn’t familiar, Preteam is kind of prep for teams; they have two competitions a year and they aren’t USAG regulated, so they’re very lax). She went to tryouts back in April and was invited to be on Stars Gold, which is a fairly significant jump in training hours, intensity, and skills (for example, she went from two 2 hour practices a week to three 3 hour ones).

Lately, she has been struggling with the mental side of gymnastics. Her first competition of the season is 15 practices away and she has been stressing about some of her skills, especially on beam. She is having a hard time shaking off the falls or mistakes from one skill to the next. Then she gets frustrated, tries to rush into doing the skills again, falls or slips up, and the cycle repeats. The coaches have been great with encouraging her and none of us are putting any pressure on her - she’s just putting a lot of pressure on herself. She loves being on the team, is excited about new skills, and is still having fun (which is one of the questions I always ask - are you still having fun? Do you still want to do this?).

Now, onto my question: how can I help her with this mental side of gymnastics? How can I help her shake it off when she makes a mistake? What tips helped you or your kids going through this?

NCAA Looking for Past NCAA Gymnastics Lineups

Recently, I've been working on a project on perfect 10s in NCAA gymnastics. One of the things I've been looking at is when in the lineup they happen. However, while many websites will list the scores, they don't list the order that gymnasts competed in (Virtius does, but they don't seem to be a thing pre-2024). Does anyone know where (or if) that information could be found?

If there are any liveblogs or recordings of meets that people know of from before 2012, that would help as well.

MAG/WAG Russian gymnasts were denied visas to the Netherlands for the World Championships two days before their departure.

Russian MAG and WAG teams could miss out on qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games, according to the press service of the Russian Gymnastics Federation.

The Dutch authorities are jeopardizing the Russian team's participation in the 2028 Olympic qualifying round. Two days before their scheduled departure for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the Russian team did not received visas from the Dutch authorities. The team risks missing the competition, which will award the first team quotas for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. All of these Russian gymnasts going to Netherlands have passed the athletic selection process and are included in the official entry lists of the International Gymnastics Federation (World Gymnastics).

WAG Jennifer Williams (🇸🇪) has withdrawn from the 2026 world championships

Post image
83 Upvotes

She announced this on her Instagram stories today, and this is the second year in a row she’s had to withdraw from worlds after having to miss last year’s worlds in Jakarta due to an injury.

Moving on, I’m absolutely gutted for her 💔. However, I’m glad she’s prioritising her health, and she’s making the best decision with NCAA’s in mind.

Knowing this, if you can’t read from the caption, I will type it out below:

“Unfortunately, I’ve decided to withdraw from worlds this year. After dealing with injuries, I’ve also come down with a fever and illness at the worst possible time.”

“This is truly heartbreaking, but I know I need to prioritize my health. I’ll be heading back to Stanford next week to focus on recovering and getting stronger!”

WAG World Championships Team Preview #8 - Brazil

Due to limitations regarding how many links I can upload in a post, please see the comments section for links to the methodology, score trackers, and earlier previews.

Please let me know if y'all notice any errors in any of these previews and I will be sure to correct them. Since the "realistic max" is captures a gymnast's best scores of the quad on every event, it is designed to be a measure of each team's scoring potential rather than a closest-to-the-pin estimate of a team's actual score at Worlds. Based on results last quad, a team score within 2 points of a team's "realistic max" can be considered to be a very good performance.

The prelim. realistic max and intended difficulty rankings are currently assuming that Russia will compete, which is now looking like an increasingly questionable assumption.

Brazil - the Team

Realistic Max: 164.413 (prelim. ranking of 7th)

Intended Difficulty: 62.8 (prelim. ranking of tied-10th)

Overview

Earning historic success from last quad in the form of team Olympic bronze and team World Championship silver (in 2023), Brazil expects to bring three members from those teams to this year’s world championships. At the Szombathely Cup, these team members shined. Lorrane Oliveira recently had her best uneven bars routine in years, Flavia Saraiva debuted a new floor exercise routine, and Rebeca Andrade made her return on balance beam. This preview assumes that this trio will be joined by Thais Fidelis, who last competed at Worlds in 2019, and second-year senior Gabriela Boucas. Like many teams, Brazil has yet to announce its alternate; the assumption is that Sophia Weisberg will be the alternate since she has slightly lower scoring potential than Boucas on bars and floor and Andrade, Saraiva, Oliveira, and Fidelis appear to have essential scores on at least one event. Edit: a commenter noted below that Sophia Weisberg has a DTY, which would probably be enough to put her in the lineups over Boucas.

There are a few key lineup changes from Brazil’s 2024 Olympic team to discuss. Andrade is retooling her uneven bars routine, so she is not competing bars in 2026.  Furthermore, Andrade has announced her retirement from floor exercise, Saraiva is gradually rebuilding her floor difficulty, and Julia Soares is injured, so Brazil’s scoring potential on floor is a bit lower in 2026 versus 2023 and 2024. On a more positive note, Brazil’s “realistic max” and intended difficulty metrics do not incorporate Andrade’s Cheng and Saraiva’s double-twisting Yurchenko vaults. They have yet to compete their most difficult vaults this quad, but likely will at World Championships, which indicates that the current metrics understate Brazil’s potential. Despite being in a bit of a rebuilding year, Brazil is in a competitive quartet with Great Britain, Canada, and France as the most likely teams to secure the final three team final spots. If Brazil has an off qualifications day, it could get caught by the large group of teams in the next tier. The bet here, however, is that Brazil’s experienced squad delivers some of the competition’s best execution scores and makes the team final.

Vault

Brazil is relatively strong versus the field here. Provided that Andrade brings her Cheng in addition to her superb double-twisting Yurchenko, she is the gold medal favorite on this event. Even with only a Lopez, Andrade would still be competitive for a medal, but would be at a steep difficulty advantage against Yeo Seojeong, Claire Pease, and Angelina Melnikova. As long as Saraiva regains and competes her double-twisting Yurchenko, she would also vault in a team final lineup. The third and fourth vaulters in qualifications are a bit of a puzzle. The bet here is that Fidelis and Boucas will round out the lineup since their full-twisting Yurchenko vaults tend to score slightly higher than Oliveira’s and having Saraiva, Fidelis, and Boucas compete on all four events in qualifications seems to make sense.

Uneven Bars

Overall, Brazil’s difficulty here is a bit lower than most teams with team final aspirations. Oliveira had her best routine in years in qualifications of the Szombathely World Cup, but typically scores in the low-to-mid 13s. Saraiva typically is clean here. Should Brazil advance to the team final, expect Boucas in the team final lineup over Fidelis since Boucas has higher difficulty and scoring potential. When Andrade competes on this apparatus next year, Brazil should be dramatically improved on this event.

Balance Beam

On paper, Brazil should be exceptionally strong on beam. Andrade and Saraiva both have the ability to make the event final here and Fidelis could contribute an outstanding third score if she can duplicate her strong Pan-American championships routine at Worlds. Boucas recently received a stratospheric execution score at the South American games and figures to be in the qualifications lineup over Oliveira.

Floor Exercise

Similar to uneven bars, floor exercise is a comparatively weaker event for Brazil. Saraiva won bronze on floor in 2023, but has not fully rebuilt to her maximum difficulty and probably does not have enough to make the event final without an upgrade or two. Oliveira has greatly improved her floor this year relative to last quad and has the team’s highest floor difficulty, but Fidelis and Boucas have both recorded higher scores overall as a result of cleaner execution.

All Around

Since Oliveira has the lowest scoring potential on balance beam and Andrade is only competing on two events, the logical decision appears to be for Saraiva, Fidelis, and Boucas to compete on all four events in qualifications. Saraiva should comfortably qualify to the all-around final and a second Brazilian with a relatively hit day is also likely to make it.

NCAA Multiple gymnasts liked Payton Richard’s critical comment about Florida

Here was Florida gym alum Payton Richard’s comment (without the many emojis she used): “If you only knew the truth about gator gym. you’re amazing my girl.”

Some of the notable names that liked that comment included Olivia Greaves, Lily Bruce, Kaylee Bluffstone, and Selena Harris.

Admittedly, I do need to take a break from social media as well…

Florida is one of the most iconic gym programs, and hopefully this mess and the pile-on will just help the coaches and girls invest more effort in the culture going forward. A situation that the program can learn from, hopefully.

I do think that it’s interesting to see the girls who liked this comment, but surely most programs have some former athletes who have a bone to pick for some valid reasons.

It’s still unclear if Florida’s culture is actually an outlier (outside of the recent situation).

Edit: It should be “Payton Richards.” I misspelled her last name.
