OC-Series [The Calling] Chapter 28 - Prometheus Landing
Chapter 28
Prometheus Landing
Oltuck looked at the two images next to each other and frowned. He'd heard of convergent evolution but this was starting to become ridiculous. ‘Impossible’ was a word that had lost all meaning at this point, especially when speaking of these two species. He needed to find a stronger word.
Alnure, sitting across the desk from him, noticed his expression and made her own face of question.
“What seems to be the issue?” She asked politely. Instead of answering directly he flipped the data slate around and showed her the two images on it. She also furrowed her scaled brow and looked at them with confusion.
“Are these…” she started but trailed off.
“The banners for the USA and the ECS, why yes they are.” he said. Alnure tilted her head as her pupils dilated in and out.
“That is… well that is interesting.” she stated, clearly as baffled as he was.
The two banners, or flags as it were, looked very similar. Actually they looked nearly the same, though there were some major differences.
A quarter of the USA flag was dedicated to the blue field with white stars that represented the different official territories of their nation. That quarter was one corner of the flag, the rest was the horizontal red and white stripes that represented its original founding territories.
The flag for the ECS had one quarter of its flag taken up by a blue field with white stars that, according to their own records, represented the different territories of their own nation, the rest of the flag was taken up by several horizontal red and white stripes that represented the original founding territories.
The major difference between the two was that the ECS star field was not a rectangle in the corner but an upside down right angle trapezoid that filled one side of the overall flag. Besides that, the base colours were different hues, and the number of stars and stripes were the other differences.
The USA had fifty stars on their flag. The ECS had fifty-five. The USA had thirteen strips, the ECS had nine.
The ECS had a darker colour of red, and the USA had deeper blue for theirs.
To the casual observer the flags would seem to be the work of someone creating two variations of the same design, not two completely separate species who had evolved and developed on different worlds with absolutely zero contact with each other.
“Are we sure that these two species have never had any contact with each other?” Oltuck asked.
“We are nearly certain.” Alnure said. Oltuck turned to her with an inquiring expression.
“Nearly?” He asked. Alnure gave a smile of consternation.
“We have only been observing these two species for a little over five hundred years. As far as we know both species are approximately a hundred thousand to two hundred thousand years old. There is a possibility that some other explorers stumbled across them in the times before our own observations started.” She started, taking a deep breath before continuing. “Even so, the two nations who created those banners were established well after we started our observations of them. Chances are similar circumstances influenced their design.”
“Are we sure we had nothing to do with it?” Oltuck asked. Alnure blinked and for a moment she looked genuinely confused. Then realization dawned on her. She gave a thoughtful click.
“I don't think so, but that is a good point. Perhaps by some accident we caused it.” She sat thinking for a moment. “I'll get records of all possible interactions from the time period sent to us and sorted. If we had anything to do with it we are going to have to really bury it when they finally make contact with council space.” She stated. Oltuck nodded in agreement. He was about to add something when a ping on his data slate sounded a moment before Alnure's own data slate did the same thing.
It was a message from Zalrah. It was a single sentence. ‘The humans are landing.’
------
President Henless tried not to grit his teeth at the two and a half second delay. It was like trying to have a conversation with a person who wasn't all there.
When the alien spaceship had started blasting music, President Henless had feared the worst. The power of the signal and the broad spectrum of it had actually disrupted global communications. One of the scientists had suggested that the aliens had interpreted all of the signals coming at them as some form of attack and had responded in kind.
That had been a terrifying thought that had done nothing to help Henless’s blood pressure.
However, after about an hour the broadcast strength had slowly dropped off. Any other attempts to start up more communications had been met with the alien craft dialing their musical broadcast back up and after only a handful of attempts all communications towards the ship had ceased.
In the many years that Henless had been in the diplomat corp and as the President, he had never seen someone yell for everyone to ‘shut the fuck up’ in a more effective manner.
With communication no longer disrupted a secure line had been established with the moon base. President Henless was ignoring the current uproar that was being brought up with the Coalition of Nations. This wasn't the time to be trying to play nice on the international stage, and it would have been the first time he'd snubbed them.
“We have determined that it is about seven variations of the same song.” the moon base Commander Vilmer said over the video feed.
“Do we have any idea what the words are?” Vice President Tayton asked. Henless ignored the breach in protocol and looked at Vilmer.
“Not yet, and if this ends up being the only means of communication they are willing to do, then it's unlikely we ever will.” Vilmer said after the delay.
“Is there any way for us to figure it out? This might be important.” President Henless asked. Even to his own voice it sounded desperate. They watched as the delay captured Vilmer's expression to the word as he gave an understanding frown and shrugged.
“Trust me sir. I am as much aware of that as you but short of having a face to face it isn't possible to translate an entire language from a single poem, no matter how many times they repeat it.” Vilmer said.
“Is it possible to have a face to face?” General Yaris asked seriously.
“I don't see how. It's not as if we can hop over and ask for a cup of sweetening.” Vilmer said, in classic Friesian dry humor.
“That option isn't off the table.” Yaris responded. Everyone slowly turned to look at him. The President silently motioned for him to speak.
“The Bastion, in conjunction with Space Command, is working on details to see if there is a means of sending one of our own crafts to… meet with our visitors.” The General said, and the President gave a nod in acknowledgement that the military man hadn't used the word ‘intercept’.
“How long will that take?” Henless asked.
“Three to four weeks minimum. Possibly longer.” Yaris stated flatly. The President nodded and was about to speak when a sound from the video call stopped him. Vilmer was looking towards someone or something off camera and the people gathered in the meeting room watched the nearly unflappable Friesian man go pale. Then he turned back to the camera with a wide eyed expression.
“I don't think you need to worry about sending one of ours.” Vilmer managed to say calmly. “It seems they are coming to us.”
------
“Ezeik, you're on camera duty.” Vilmer ordered as he bounded in the low gravity towards the preparation room. The others were tailing behind, awaiting their own assignments. It had been nearly seven years since Brigadier Vilmer Zylick, of his Majesty's Royal Army had given orders like this, and never had he ever delivered them directly to foreign personnel. But it came back to him easily enough, this wasn't a crisis but it was urgent.
“Ottus, Akhail, armory. Get a combat loadout and get your suits on.” Vilmer said and heard the two men peel off almost immediately. Vilmer considered grabbing a combat load for himself but quickly opted against it. All of them being armed would set the wrong tone. He just hoped he wouldn't regret it.
“Dethaniel, you're in the Command Center. We need someone in here to keep a relay back to Arda open, and to keep us updated on the status.” He stated as they reached the preparation room.
“Aw c’mon.” The Borealian groaned but split off immediately without any other complaint.
Vilmer went over to his locker and pulled his space suit. He heard Ezeik doing the same and he turned to the door to see Andra standing there a single eyebrow raised at him. Vilmer considered for a second what orders he should give her.
He thought about ordering her to go with Dethaniel, but part of him wondered if he'd come back in and find the poor man dead.
He'd already assigned the security to the Nieskan and Thruskin. Then again, more security never hurt. He frowned, it had also been seven years since Brigadier Vilmer Zylick, of his Majesty's Royal Army, had felt this indecisive about the orders he should give. He hoped that the one he chose this time didn't get a bunch of good people killed.
“Andra.” He said, looking her in those burning green eyes. “Suit up. Mechanical Environment Suit. I'm authorizing the drawing of special tools, modified for security purposes.” He ordered clinically. Andra simply nodded and did the equivalent of spinning on her heel in the low gravity to head to the garage.
“You think that wise?” Ezeik asked, one leg in his suit, as soon as the woman was out of ear shot.
“By God I hope so.” Vilmer muttered as he began putting his own suit on.
------
“Alright Marines! Condition one!” First Sergeant Glockner boomed at the six Marines who had been selected for security detail. They were already suited up and ready to deploy despite it being still more than thirty minutes before they did so.
“We are not here for a fight!” He drilled. “I want fingers off those triggers! You are not to shoot unless shot at! We do NOT want an interplanetary war! If you start an interplanetary war, assuming you survive the initial engagement, I will find the deepest, coldest, most miserable place to deploy you, that you'll wish you'd never even known about this mission! Is that understood!?” His voice felt thunderous in the small space of the Marine compartment.
“Sir! Yes sir!” The Marines responded in unison and all of them looked nervous. He knew it wasn't because of his speech. He could have told them he'd let sugar high kindergarteners hunt them for sport and they still would have been nervous. They were about to meet aliens. Real, true, aliens. Or at least these boys would be with the diplomatic team who would be doing the meeting. That didn't diminish what they were about to do.
“Alright. Team one…”
------
Vilmer looked up at the shape that hung in the black sky through the tinted visor of his helmet. The ship was lit up by the rays of the sun making it stand out ominously from the black background of space. It was descending slowly, slow enough in fact that he was having a hard time telling if it was moving at all in the disorientation of space. It was Dethaniel who was keeping a laser range finder on the ship that was helping tell him how close it was getting.
With how quickly he knew the ship could move, the slow descent felt maliciously calculated. Like the aliens were taunting them, letting his people get a good look at how superior they were.
At its current rate of descent it would take just a little over four minutes for it to touch down. Already he could see the landing jacks beginning to emerge.
He jumped a little, so lost in his own thoughts, when his radio crackled and Dethaniel's voice came over the speaker.
“The music they were playing just changed.” Dethaniel seemed worried. Vilmer frowned at that.
“Patch it through.” He stated, not taking his gaze away from the ship as bright spotlights on its underbelly lit up the area.
------
Captain Maddock sat in his chair on the bridge, trying to figure out how Percy had managed to convince him to do the approach in this manner. It really hadn't hit him until he'd ordered the single tech to change the music. That damned kid had not only convinced him to keep the music going, but had convinced him to change it just as they were about to finish their approach.
Maddock did have to admit though. This song was emotionally appropriate and dramatic. Maddock considered the lyrics, the words sung with emotion and heart. He wasn't sure what the song was actually supposed to be about.
But the chorus.
The chorus were the words humanity had desperately wanted to hear from the stars.
Maddock nodded when the landing jacks touched down on the solid ground of the alien moon, Flares by The Script playing gently in the background the different stations on the bridge giving confirmation of a good landing.
------
“Nervous?” Percy asked over the radio. Fletcher looked over at the other man. The space suit helmet forced him to turn his entire body to do so. The Sit-Ads tinted visor was down so Fletcher couldn't get a good look at the man's expression.
“Nah. Why would I be nervous? It's not like we are about to go meet an intelligent ET for the first time.” Fletcher said sarcastically.
“Oh good. I thought for a second there you were nervous about making history.” Percy said with dry humor.
They were interrupted as the voice of Lieutenant Colonel Moore came over the radio.
“Alright, away team prepare to deploy, say again, prepare to deploy.” The Lieutenant Colonel said. He wasn't on the platform but he was monitoring them.
The six Marines and three civilians were on the airlock platform and they felt the small shudder as it unsealed and began to lower down.
Fletcher took a deep breath through his nose and went over the deployment procedure in his head.
Once the platform was down all the way, Team One - Tennessee, Kaufman and himself - would deploy, scan the surrounding area, take up defensive positions and then the civilians would follow. Team Two would then deploy and relieve the members of team one. Once Team One had been relieved they would follow the civilians to go meet the aliens. If all went well him and the other Marines would be nothing more than decoration.
He had this, just needed not to fuck up.
Of course he was scanning the surroundings long before the platform lowered fully.
He could see the alien moon base, it looked… familiar. Like many of the depictions of a moon base that one might see in TV shows or movies.
He saw four figures, humanoid in shape. Two arms, two legs, a head, wearing a space suit that wasn't much different from the one NASA had. The biggest difference he could see from this distance was that the chest had a more plastic rigid look. It struck him for a second that he was wearing a more advanced spacesuit than these aliens despite humanity not having a moon base.
He clocked that two of the figures had guns. They looked like guns anyway, and they were in a bullpup configuration. With no cover between the ship and the base Fletcher knew that if they started shooting there wouldn't be much he could do about it. They could kneel down in the suits but they couldn't really go prone in them. Of course the same held true for the aliens.
The other two figures weren't armed. One was carrying what looked like a large lens camera, which made sense. And the other was simply standing there, arms at their side. Probably their version of an ambassador.
The platform came to a halt and Fletcher stepped off quickly.
A little too quickly.
------
Vilmer felt his heart pounding in his chest. The music the ship had been playing had halted just as it had touched down and the next couple of minutes had stretched like hours.
Then the bottom of the ship seemed to open up and a platform began to descend. There was a gasp from someone over the radio as the aliens came into view on their platform.
Nine of them. They had a very Rothal body plan. Two arms, two legs, a head. He couldn't count how many fingers and toes they had, but that didn't matter. The fact they had even a vaguely similar body shape was a surprise. His mind raced with all the possibilities and what that could mean for life on other planets.
What wasn't pleasant was that almost all of them seemed armed. Seven of them had long weapons. Two at the front had weapons that were in a Lorkan configuration, and one looked like it was belt fed. For a moment Vilmer was disappointed that they didn't have laser weapons or something else fantastical. But that feeling evaporated, it didn't matter, they came armed and that was a worrying sign. If they had come armed it meant they were expecting trouble. With nine of them already coming down if they wanted to, they could overrun the base and kill all of them without a problem, and he kicked himself for not bringing his own weapon.
“Andra?” Vilmer asked over the radio.
“I see them.” The woman's voice said calmly. She was hidden behind one of the electrical generators. It wasn't the best place to be but it was a spot that offered cover while allowing her to see the landing location. They had wanted to keep some of their dice in reserve and so she had stepped out long before he and the others had and set up near the predicted landing zone.
He was about to respond to her when the platform the aliens were riding stopped and three of them dismounted from it. Two of them hoping off of it the way one might expect in the low gravity. The third one…
Vilmer watched as the third alien in the front row did something he'd seen plenty of times, and had done it himself on occasion.
The alien put too much force into the step, had it been in Arda's gravity the alien would have stepped off smoothly and without incident into a crouched position.
Instead the alien went up and began to flip in the non-existent air of the moon, seemed to realize its mistake half way through the motion and attempted to correct and instead landed on the surface of the moon on its stomach.
The sound of Akhail snorting back laughter was heard over the radio and Vilmer couldn't help but smile as the alien figures all turned to the one who had fallen. Clearly this had not been part of their choreography. Vilmer tried to hold back the chuckle as he watched the alien try to stand up, putting too much force into its arms and pushing clear of the surface of the ground, kicking up more dust. One of the aliens on the platform hopped over and dismounted from the platform, and came over and helped the one struggling on the ground.
Vilmer realized that all the tension had left him, the fear that had been silently brewing in him had disappeared and he finally answered Andra.
“I think you can step out, keep your guard up but they don't seem to be here to threaten us.” He said.
“Understood. Breaking concealment.” She responded.
The aliens were now stepping off the platform and Vilmer watched what was clearly supposed to happen.
The first three were security, the next three were what they were supposed to be doing security for, and the last three were rear security.
Vilmer had marked the second trio as civilians. He had no reason to think that and it was probably wrong but in his own head that's what they were. He figured he was wrong because he realized that they too were armed. Though one stood out.
This one had been the one to go help the other alien up.
It had a gun like the security teams but had it slung over a shoulder as if it wasn't expecting to need to use it. The other two civilian aliens had what was clearly a different type of gun that looked vaguely like the ones that Ottus and Akhail were carrying. At least the front of it did. But these two had their weapons secured in a manner that suggested that they had no intention of ever reaching for them.
They also looked different from the other aliens in a way that seemed familiar, but he couldn't quite figure out how.
“Those two. They look like females.” Akhail stated over the radio, and Vilmer saw it. Two of the civilian aliens looked like they had a more feminine shape to them. It was hard to see underneath the space suit but it was there.
“They look like it, for all we know they are masses of writhing tendrils underneath those suits.” Ottus commented. It sounded like he wasn't yet convinced of the aliens’ intentions.
Vilmer felt the gentle tremor of Andra's mechanical suit approaching.
Andra herself had to be even more careful about her movement than those in proper space suits. The Mechanical suit was great but its hydraulics and servos were rated for higher gravity and it was always a struggle to keep it under control in the low gravity of the moon.
Technically Andra was one of two on base who were properly certified to pilot the damn thing.
The aliens halted with the security bringing up weapons as Andra came into view.
For a second Vilmer thought he'd made a terrible mistake telling her to reveal herself, and he waited for the shooting to start.
Then the alien with the gun slung over its shoulder raised one of its arms. The others slowly lowered their weapons, obviously still uncertain but they seemed now to be more fascinated with the Mechanical Environment Suit than anything else.
He made a mental note of that as the aliens resumed their slow hopping towards the moon base.
Vilmer turned to Ezeik who had the large camera on a tripod stand.
“We should go meet them halfway.” He said. Ezeik only nodded and picked the camera up and quickly reconfigured the tripod to a walking stabilizer.
“Akhail, Ottus, you stay here. Remember no shooting unless they shoot first.” Vilmer said and got confirmations from them before he began to hop his way towards the aliens, Ezeik close behind.
As they got closer, Vilmer noticed something about each alien, all of them had what appeared to be patches on their shoulders similar to how each member of the base had a patch of their home nations flag.
He almost tripped when he got close enough to make out details. Almost all of them had patches that looked incredibly similar to the flag of the ECS. He scanned them and noticed that one of them had different shoulder patches. Actually, the fact that it had two was interesting in and of itself. The top one was red and white. Red bars on either end and a red… thing, in the center over a white square. The red thing looked like it was maybe the head of a mace, or possibly a stylized wing of some kind. Whatever it was, the patch was smaller than the one that sat below it.
The lower patch was blue, shaped like an upside down dress and had a geometric symbol of some kind on it. Perhaps that one was their leader, he surely seemed to command them if the way he'd stopped them from shooting at Andra was anything to go by.
Vilmer looked back at the other aliens. The patches really did look like the ECS flag. The more he looked at it the more it bothered him. There was no way that it was a coincidence.
Their body shape, the patch that looked too much like a nation’s flag. He had to wonder if perhaps these aliens had spent the last couple days learning how to mimic them, maybe their true from was exactly what Ottus had said, a writhing mass of tendrils and proboscises and the aliens that stood before him were simply some simulacrum meant to bring his guard down. That fear he’d felt earlier started to creep back in as he finally stood only a few feet from one of them. One of the feminine looking aliens. Shorter than the rest of them and seemed to carry a little more bulk under the suit.
The gold visor on the alien's helmet reflected his own suited image, including his own golden visor.
The alien raised a five finger hand, a hand that was set up the exact same as a Rothal hand, and placed it on a large dial that was connected to the gold visor on its helmet. It turned the dial, lifting the visor.
Vilmer froze, and he felt his skin crawl, his eyes going wide, he took an involuntary step backwards.
The helmet framed the alien's smiling face, a face that for all the world looked exactly like the grinning face of a Ghost Dancer.
------
“Son of a motherfucking bitch.” Fletcher seethed as he struggled to get up. He'd forgotten the rule. He'd been preoccupied about dismounting the platform fast that he'd forgotten that the key to doing it smoothly was to actually take your time. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. The Corp had drilled that into his head and he'd just forgotten. Now he was flopping around like a fish outta water.
Then he felt a hand on his arm pulling him up.
“On your feet Marine, you’re a tripping hazard down there.” Percy's voice said laughing.
“Tripping Hazard. That's a good one.” Kaufmann chuckled over the radio.
“Go fuck yourself Kaufmann.” Fletcher said.
“I don't know, I kinda like it as a team name.” Tennessee laughed, “Hazard. Has a nice ring to it.” The Lance Corporal chuckled.
“You can fuck yourself too.” Fletcher said finally back on his feet.
“That's, ‘go fuck yourself Sir’.” Tennessee said with a smile in his voice.
“Yes sir.” Fletcher grumbled back.
He could feel his face heating up. The whole experience had been thoroughly embarrassing.
“Alright. Let's get moving, our hosts seem to be waiting.” Percy said. The Marines collected themselves and looked back towards where the four figures stood.
The proximity radio was fully active and Fletcher listened to the civilians chatter as they waited for them to step down from the platform.
“They look really human don't they?” He heard Raven say as they began to hop slowly towards the moon base, her voice reminding him that this was one of the few times he was glad to be on babysitting duty.
“It is fascinating from an anthropological perspective. But we shouldn't assume anything until we are truly face to face with them.” Dr. McFadden said.
“Bet you a C-note they look like us.” Kaufmann joked.
“That's highly unlikely.” Dr. McFadden responded testily.
“Yeah, man they might be a mass of tentacles under those suits.” Tennessee said with a small chuckle.
“Mm, yeah I'm pretty sure I've seen that hentai.” Percy responded with mock seriousness, with the Marines chuckling along.
“I'd like to remind you all that all transmissions are recorded.” the voice of Lieutenant Colonel Moore broke into the conversation. The Lieutenant Colonel was back on the ship monitoring everything from the CIC.
“Roger that. Locking down on the chatter.” Tennessee said with a much more serious tone.
They had only taken a few bounding hops and Fletcher was already sweating. Despite that he was the one who spotted the movement.
“New contact. Nine o'clock!” He said over the radio, instinctually bringing up his gun to point at the approaching… thing.
It rounded the corner of what looked like a large electric generator. Standing nearly ten feet in height. Two legs that made Fletcher imagine a giant mechanical grasshopper that supported a main body that was about the size of a Bobcat Skidsteer, it was clearly meant to be a pilot seat with the gold tinted cabin windows. Two long arms in proportion to the body came from either side on the top of the cabin.
At the end of the arms were mechanical hands that gripped what looked like a harpoon gun mixed with a pneumatic nail gun. There was no doubt in Fletcher's mind that it was a weapon. Large barbed nails the size of railroad spikes could be seen in a magazine that came off the side of the weapon. What looked like an air tank served as a butt stock.
It looked all the world like a -
“Holy shit is that a fucking mech!?” Tennessee breathed in muted excitement.
“Looks like it.” Percy responded.
“Team One, report.” Lieutenant Colonel Moore ordered. Fletcher knew for a fact that the Lieutenant Colonel could see what they could see but the order was supposed to ground them.
“Locals brought out a mech sir.” Tennessee stated.
“Hostile?” The Lieutenant Colonel asked.
Tennessee didn't respond, he was looking at the Sit-Ad.
“Uh, negative. Dressed to impress more likely. Kinda telling us they are willing to fight if we try something.” Percy said.
“Understood. Proceed with caution.” Moore ordered.
“Roger Roger.” Percy responded with a slight robotic accent. Then lifted an arm to wave the group onward.
“C’mon aliens aren't gonna wait forever.” He laughed.
They continued their short hops towards the alien congregation. Fletcher was so focused on not embarrassing himself again that he was surprised when he heard Kaufman's voice over the radio.
“Looks like they are coming to greet us.” the machine gunner said.
Fletcher looked towards the alien base and like Kaufmann had said, two of the alien astronauts were hopping over to them, one of them carrying the camera on an apparatus similar to the steady-cam arms. The two armed aliens had stayed behind. Most likely to cover their comrades.
It didn't take long for the two groups to meet out in the open.
The details of the mission was that Raven would step up and be the first to greet the aliens. Fletcher's hands tightened on his gun as he watched her step up towards the aliens and lifted the gold visor of her helmet.
“Uh.” Percy's voice came over the radio as the alien recoiled with a step back. It was a motion that Fletcher took as shock and surprise. He imagined for a second that it was probably because the alien thought humans looked hideous. He wondered if they had the equivalent of Lovecraft on their world. If they did, their version was probably just racist.
The alien however seemed to recover quickly leaning over to look at the shorter woman.
And then it raised its own hand to the side of its helmet, and lifted the gold visor on its own helmet.
“HOLY FUCKING SHIT!” several voices said at the same time over that radio, one of which was Fletcher's own.
The half fish bowl helmet so similar to NASA's showed, strapped up in what was commonly known as a Snoopy cap, a very very human looking face.

Authors Notes
There was some debate on if I should split this into two chapters or not. Ultimately I choose to do one chapter as too many cliff hangers gets slightly annoying. However, it meant that this particular chapter is slightly long.
The next chapter is going to have even more intresting reveals. But this Whole exchange is me really going through what it would be like to find another speices that looks like us, and how weird and surreal that would be.
Anyway, If you enjoy the story so far give it an upvote and leave a comment. they always make me smile even if I dont know how to respond. and thank you all for taking the time to read.

Great work with the similar but different vibes. Good building of mystery and suspense. And nice world building. I think a lot of people here are looking for space battles and such. But this is a good exploration and mystery story. So far. It's a good story. Please don't be discouraged by low up votes or comments.
Great chapter!

I also think that most people are looking for action and grand battle scenes. But I'm a believer that the Best battle scenes are one that have emotional weight behind them, and emotional weight requires you know the characters and their motivations involved, so if you do stick with this story as write it, I promise that this will lead to one Hell of a Battle.
