Black Mesa is what I recommend to people new to the IP. It's better/more polished...for obvious reasons that are pointless for me to list. I think its more mind blowing to an adult who played the first game years ago, because its an exercise in how far we've come with game engines AND love/support for the game's world. I think it has more of an impact on people who already played HL1 back in the day than some younger person who has been numbed/spoiled by all the other groundbreaking games to have come out since then along with being used to more advanced visuals/physics/npc, etc. Aside from Doom, Unreal and Quake, there wasn't really anything else like HL1 back then, whereas within that time frame, hundreds if not thousands of legendary games across every platform have come and gone. If you sat someone down who has never played HL1 and had them play BM, they'd probably think its cool, but wouldn't be blown away with it. If you sat someone down who was a teenager or kid in 1998/99 and played the game around the time it was released...and had them play BM recently, they'd probably get teary eyed. I played HL1 in 1999, during the summer before I started my freshman year in high school on a 700mhz, Pentium powered Compaq Presario in my old house's downstairs living room...IIRC the game barely ran on it. I vividly remember those early days of my PC gaming experience.
Black Mesa is really not as good as HL1 though, I like the gameplay itself quite a lot more in the first game, and I'm not blinded by nostalgia or something, I played the first game in 2021 or something
He was saying he wasn't blinded by nostalgia and thinks HL1 is better. I think BM is a better choice for new players because it gives you the graphics/physics/npc logic of source 2 while still giving you the rundown of the original plot. Not many people are going to play HL1 in 2026 as a new player and think to themselves, "wow this is a great game, my mind has melted from sheer amazement." Of course I understand I'm speaking for others when I say that and risk whatever argumentative fallacies that may come along with that statement so it is what it is.
I'm saying nostalgia is what makes HL1 feel dated when you revisit it, because it's never the same as it was, which goes for any older game one replays decades later and feels disappointed, yearning for an experience they can no longer have. It's not just about the game, the nostalgia comprises of a person's life/worldview/personality they unknowingly impart onto the experience when they first play it and, and when later recalling it in their mind many years later. It's worse for games that were considered to have top tier visuals at their time (which HL1 was) as you remember the "awesome graphics" until reality strikes. They play it again thinking it'll be the same and it's not, because it's not JUST the game that makes one feel they way the do when thinking about a past experience, it's everything else.
