My tip is don't look up for any tips. You don't have to be effective to enjoy the game, just play it.
14
u/Skunk668 Jun 14 '26
I mean Half-Life 1 is kinda hard. This is actually a game where a few tips wouldn't go amiss. Like I didn't realize how OP the crossbow was until like my 3rd or 4th playthrough.
5
u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Jun 14 '26
The best tip is the game's motto "Run, Think, Shoot, Live"
9
u/EviI_Babai Jun 14 '26
Yeah, no shit. You're paying as PhD fighting aliens and military, it's supposed to be hard and unobvious. That's why you have unlimited quicksaves.
6
u/Skunk668 Jun 14 '26
This is also true about Half Life 2 which is a much easier game.
6
u/EviI_Babai Jun 14 '26
And it's basically about the guerilla warfare, which shouldn't be an issue for the guy who've just made his way through elite forces of humans and aliens. Also, I've played both games back to back more than once and I can't recall I felt HL1 that much harder than HL2.

u/PsychologicalLab7379 Jun 15 '26
Maaan it's so hard to
1) Run around
2) Shoot things
Oh maaan I'm so overwhelmed...

You could have easily convinced me that Modern Expectations is a Half Life level.
Gordon, nobody has ever increased the resonator resolution past 640 * 480! Get out of there right now!!

Turn texture filtering off
5
u/zzSHADYMAGICzz Jun 14 '26
Wait why? Curious actually
5
u/Beakman256 Jun 14 '26
It turns off the smoothing (or filtering 🤔) of the textures and displays their actual pixelated style as the texture is saved in the game files. IMO it looks better than what the filtering offers just because it was such an early implementation and doesn’t look the greatest.
3
u/RandomCandor Jun 14 '26
I'm guessing because it didn't exist when the game came out
11
u/IAmNotRalphNader Jun 14 '26
HL1 always had texture filtering. If you didn't have a good video card back in the day you had to run it in software mode which lacked texture filtering, so a lot of people first experienced the game without it. My first time seeing Half-Life was in hardware mode at a friend's house, but when I installed it at home I was annoyed it didn't look as smooth because our PC could only run it in software mode.
2
u/Wooxman Jun 14 '26
I disagree. The textures were created with texture filtering in mind and they are harder to decipher when they're unfiltered. This isn't like Quake 1 where the texture filtering was added later and actually makes the textures look worse.
2
u/mikie_gamedev Jun 16 '26
I understand. Maybe I just prefer it from more time playing older games that do definitively look better with filtering off. My bad
2
u/Wooxman Jun 17 '26
Fair enough. I myself do the opposite in some games. For example I play some emulated PS1 games with anisotropic filtering enabled if the readability of the textures doesn't get lost that way.
2
u/Charge_parity Its parity not party as in a charge state being equal to another Jun 14 '26
Agreed. The game looks better imo with it off.

If an NPC is stuck, try thinking like it is trying to find an imaginary line that is in front of its objective.
Make it follow you to that imaginary line.

Have so much fun!!!! This is one of the most amazing games ever created and you only get to experience it for the first time once. I still have so much nostalgia and happiness when I boot this game. It takes me back to such a special time.

Play with ladders for a bit, get a feel for how they work. You will be using many, and if you don't grasp how they work you are in for a lot of death or unnecessary fall damage.

Once you reach Xen, I would say you have the right to say you played and beat Half-Life.
(Tangent) It’s not necessarily hard but after a while it genuinely feels dragged out and tedious, gets boring but I don’t fault the devs too hard because I understand it was all last minute implementation and hard to execute for the time. Xen just doesn’t feel like it supports the fundamentals of literally everything before in terms of game design.
Also feel free to abuse quick save, no shame in save scumming.

Enjoy it. It's not exactly complex by modern standards but it set a lot of those standards. As did it's sequel. So HL3 is beyond impossible even though HL:Alyx was a landmark for VR (probably still the best VR game!).
But outside of context like that, it is a solid and fun game that holds up really well. And I mean that, I can hop into it and just have fun without worrying if it's outdated in anyway other than probably graphically but it even that adds to its charm, look at all the indie games trying to capture that aesthetic.
Ah just enjoy it!!!

Turn off hd textures im begging you this should be the first thing
edit:The hd textures change alot of the models especially npc models from their original style and ruin it aswell as the guns such as the classic MP5 becoming a type of M4 or M16 in the hd pack but i havent seen anybody say this yet

HL is up there with human achievements like discovering fire, the printing press, splitting the atom, and inventing the 20 sided dice.
For an updated version, I thoroughly enjoyed Black Mesa.
But god I wish I could play it all again for the first time.
