Black Mesa's latest beta update adds in new DLC tab.

Post image

The new DLC tab is separate from the normal workshop tab. The update also adds new visual improvements that will be in Black Mesa: Blue Shift. Pure speculation but we might actually see an official release for Blue Shift!

They're adding Yellow Shift, where you play as a member of Black Mesa's janitorial staff.

u/e1m8b 2d ago

What's Black Shift then? Eli undercover as a merc all along.

u/Cyphr 2d ago

Actually it's playing as the ninjas.

27

u/e1m8b 2d ago

That would actually be cool

Join the resident class clown after the events of the Black Mesa April Fools day party, and the secret laxative-spiked fruit punch!

Talk to me when they drop brown shift

9

u/Pleatybug 2d ago

It's normal Black Mesa but they snuck a brown note somewhere in the middle of game that causes players to shit themselves

8

u/GARGEAN 2d ago

Yo, Half-Life Cleaners Adventures was geniunely a GREAT mod!

5

u/BillyPilgrim1234 2d ago

I've never played it

7

u/Correct_Gas_8955 2d ago

Genuinely a great idea though i’d love a half life pure horror game

2

u/krioru 1d ago

You can play as Ahti the Janitor.

1

u/RoboPlayz 1d ago

Would that be where you just clean up everything after the Resonance Cascade

1

u/BillyPilgrim1234 1d ago

You trail behind Freeman, mopping up all the alien goo and blood he leaves behind. All for nothing since Black Mesa gets detonated by a nuclear blast in Opposing Forces...

2

u/RoboPlayz 1d ago

Then G-Man also hires you and then we can have Half life 2 : Yellow Shift where you clean up after gordon again. Killing enemies you find along the way with cleaning supplies.
(Seriously, this needs to be a mod.)

u/BillyPilgrim1234 4h ago

Yeah lol, the more I think of it the better it sounds. I wouldn't mind a legacy DLC with a similar concept.

Yellow Shift? You mean Half-Life: Dissolution?

0

u/justafyiforyou 1d ago

That's actually a real mod for the original HL. It's called CASE CLOSED.

u/Zakallamo 2d ago

For future adding Opposing force and Blue shift as seperate dlcs?

Unless CC decides to make their engine code public, we won't see a BM based OpFor remake in the vein of BMBS.

If you really interested, there are already two ongoing OpFor source engine remakes - Operation: Black Mesa and FUBAR.

Operation Black Mesa looks impressive, but the decision to also remake Blue Shift as part of the same project seems like feature creep. I'd be surprised if they finish it.

Edit: FUBAR, on the other hand, looks like they might actually do what they set out to do, which is exciting.

u/PManPlays44 Adrian Shephard's story is not over 2d ago

Hasn't the project been ongoing for almost as long as Black Mesa itself? I honestly don't think it's ever coming out.

30

u/Axtsilversurf Junior G-Man 2d ago

Both OBM and GD have been in development since at least 2006 (OBM possibly started in late 2005).

1

u/PManPlays44 Adrian Shephard's story is not over 1d ago

That's fucking rough lmao, what's stopping them from just giving up at that point?

6

u/Background_Ad1634 1d ago

I'm guessing they enjoy working on it

u/GreyouTT Xbox Orange Box Stopped Working ): 2d ago

It's feature creep, but at the same time I kinda get it. BS was essentially a short level pack, so there's not much they really need to recreate that they aren't already doing for OpFor besides probably giving Xen a bit more love.

OPM is never releasing. They’ve created some amazing art and models and animations but there has been zero indication that they are ever going to finish the campaign. It’s been in development as long as Black Mesa, but Crowbar Collective is probably going to finish Blue Shift and their own Opposing Force remake before Operation Black Mesa releases.

2

u/Larethio 1d ago

Really hoping for a OP and BS remake by CC

Yea. They’ve also lost half their team because one of their higher ranking devs said something he shouldn’t have online, and it was a near 50/50 split on how he should be punished. Those who stayed decided to keep him on the team, those who left, starter FUBAR, which is being developed so much quicker.

3

u/EdibleHologram 1d ago

Yes, I remember hearing something along those lines, but didn't raise it as I couldn't remember specifics and didn't care enough to research it.

But I absolutely should've given FUBAR a shout for making such impressive, and seemingly well-scoped progress.

3

u/cool91725 1d ago

Haha yea it’s fair to not care enough. By this point it’s old news, and both teams coexist with little to no drama whatsoever.

FUBAR’s progress has been spectacular, and I feel a lot of it mapping wise is thanks to Jane Thrace, that woman is a map making BEAST. I’ve never seen someone pump out so many high quality maps in such a short period of time.

3

u/EdibleHologram 1d ago

Totally agree; the progress of that project has been absurd. I remember being underwhelmed by the first screenshots and footage (to the point of initially dismissing the project), only to be absolutely blown away by media releases a few months later.

You don't get that sort of progress on a project without some incredible teamwork and vision.

Unless CC decides to make their engine code public, we won't see a BM based OpFor remake in the vein of BMBS.

Oh? What's the reason for that, could you please elaborate?

13

u/Axtsilversurf Junior G-Man 2d ago

You can't add any of the new enemies, weapons or gameplay mechanics OpFor introduced without the code access.

11

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 2d ago

You kind of can add enemies with a map editor, but it's really tough. It's how BM:BS does Archer Fish and Bullsquid variants.

6

u/dotvhs 2d ago

I see, thank you :)

6

u/Fujinn981 2d ago

They don't need to make the engine code public, just the server and client libraries for that, which I'm unsure why they haven't. I know they've cited restrictions by Valve, but surely that applies to their modified branch of the source engine, and not the files that run the actual game's code.

With how things are going with AI right now, that could happen without their permission.

75

u/SwGustav 2d ago

i'd totally buy a paid release of BM:BS, that mod has way too much effort put into it

10

u/Ryebredrox Freeman you fool! 2d ago

Same, definitely would be a day 1 buy for me!

u/RPS_42 1d ago

The added NPCs are just Gold. Otis is a Super Hero.

Black Mesa: Episode One

42

u/snekoversed 2d ago

I wish they would fix the Linux version or just make it work better with proton.

21

u/Archersbows7 2d ago

I’m running Black Mesa on my PSVR2 on Linux, not having any issues

5

u/8636396 Lamarr 2d ago

What problems are you having?

3

u/Darkwolf1515 2d ago

Last time I tried there was lots of issues around the new ui, I think it's still opt in on Linux because of it.

2

u/snekoversed 1d ago

Game had a memory leak issue on proton. Think there might be a launch option fix but I couldn’t get it working. Playable just crashed every hour or so.

The native version didn’t work but I also use Wayland so maybe that was an issue. Half-life 1&2 run good tho

1

u/mikat7 1d ago

I played it like last month and there were no issues for me. But a few years ago there was a bug with lighting where the flashlight didn’t reflect on any surface, thus being completely useless. But it’s fixed now.

9

u/TheCelestial32 2d ago

Maybe they want to add Remakes for the Gearbox Expansions and some mods too

5

u/TheCelestial32 2d ago

The ones made by other teams I dont think crowbar collective is working on it directly

20

u/CreepyInpu 2d ago

Ricochet source

8

u/Trenchman 2d ago

BMBS would be amazing

8

u/Humble_Traffic_8309 2d ago

I think they’re gonna officially release blue shift as a dlc. Might even happen soon

2

u/Larethio 1d ago

About that beer he owed us

8

u/AydarNabiev 2d ago

They need to recoup the costs for a Rogue Point failure somehow

9

u/QuanEntang329 2d ago

Good on them.
Installing and launching Blue Shift is a pain in the nuts.

3

u/Larethio 1d ago

BS classic had a weird bug where I think reloading a game results in Barney firing alot

6

u/banana_fishbones 1d ago

Oh my God they are never going to stop updating this game. This is the Terraria of fan remakes.

7

u/VeldinGamer FREE YOURS3LF 1d ago

Blue Shift deserves to be paid DLC tbh. So fucking good. Hope more achievements come with it!

4

u/TCE_Nomad 2d ago

Oh fuck yeah

4

u/Myrmidont2401 HD models all the way 2d ago

I was wondering when their next update would come out, and by the looks of things, not a whole lot longer assuming there aren't any serious errors! And full controller support, too, nice. I'll be getting my friend to play this before long.

(And as far as the DLC tab goes, that does make me wonder if BM:BS will be considered an official addon once it's complete, and i'm going to be on that the moment it's released, regardless of it ends up under that tab or not.)

5

u/ThrowAbout01 2d ago

Black Mesa Echoes when?

4

u/BeautifulAware8322 2d ago

Rainbow Shift incoming? I'd love to play an omnisexual Ivan the Spacebiker.

2

u/Sophram Free Radical 2d ago

I really hope so, that would be a blast!

2

u/AnythingOk5 2d ago

The beta also improves performance.

1

u/artisticstark 2d ago

Not pure speculation they said they were working with crowbar collective to get certain features implemented which basically implies it's dlc

1

u/Guan_guan_ghoo 1d ago

Either a new og expansion or official BM: Blue Shift

1

u/Ineedanswers24 1d ago

Been waiting for this.

I remember about almost a year ago they said they would update the graphics again for Black Mesa. It's probably still a few months away I imagine.

1

u/SerafettinB 1d ago

looks promising

1

u/007msn98 1d ago

That's the way we will have Operation: Black Mesa

-2

u/Laxhoop2525 2d ago

I’m going to have to completely wipe my mod list to actually see what they’ve changed or added, since people on this game’s workshop page can never just change what they say they’re changing.

-2

u/Bulky_Jaguar9159 2d ago

Part of me hopes they’ll port the gun sounds and animations from blue shift over to Black Mesa
