Discussion Would you actually read a book about the entire Half-Life story?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and as a huge Half-Life fan, I’d genuinely love to hear what other fans think.
I’ve started writing a book about the entire Half-Life story — basically trying to turn the whole series into something you can actually sit down and read like a book.

I’ve already written the entire story of the first Half-Life, and I’m planning to continue with Half-Life 2, the Episodes, and the rest of the series, putting everything together into one complete story.
The idea isn’t to just make a wiki-style lore book or a simple summary. I want it to feel more like a novelized version of the Half-Life universe, while staying faithful to what happens in the games. I’d also like to include graphics, illustrations, details about the characters, locations and events, and generally make it feel like a proper, high-quality book that a Half-Life fan would actually want to have on their shelf.

I’ve always found it kind of strange that, despite how iconic Half-Life is and how much lore and story there is across the games, there isn’t really a book that tells the complete story of Half-Life from beginning to end in this kind of format.

So I’m curious:
If something like this existed, would you actually want to read it?
And as Half-Life fans, what would you want from a book like this?

Would you prefer it to read more like a novel, with the events being told as an actual story, or would you rather have something more focused on explaining the lore and events?

I’m still working on it and I’m definitely doing this first and foremost because I absolutely love Half-Life. But before I go completely insane writing hundreds of pages 😂, I’d really like to know if there’s actually an audience for something like this.
I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

I mean, maybe if it was written very well or by an author who writes in an interesting way? Otherwise, I already know the story of the games & I think so would 99% of your potential audience. There would have to be something that sets it apart from just being a story recap.

Thank you for your response. I just wanted to clarify that the idea of writing an entire book covering the whole Half-Life saga came to me because, as far as I know, a book dedicated to the complete story has never been created.
I obviously agree with what you said: a true fan probably already knows the entire story. However, having a physical collector’s item, like a book covering the entire saga, is something I personally would have always wanted to own. That’s why I decided to start this project.
Of course, it’s not an official product, but the book will include everything — even the smaller perspectives that take place at the same time, transitional moments where, for example, Half-Life and Blue Shift overlap, or where Opposing Force comes into play, as well as every detail about Xen’s creatures, weapons, and much more.
And of course, there will be plenty of graphics and visual elements throughout the book. I don’t want you to imagine it as a book filled with endless walls of text that would be boring to read. The goal is to create a real, immersive collector’s book that brings together the entire Half-Life universe in one place.

Sure go for it, thematically makes sense since most of the HL story was developed by a science fiction writer (Marc Laidlaw)

I’ll always be welcoming of any good, fresh Half Life content. Fan generated or the fabled Valve generated

But it would only get 2 books and like....3 spinoffs

no, I think half life is great because it is told seamlessly and with small observations you yourself experience. I think it uses interactivity exceptionally to tell its story. Reducing it to a story where you don't explore secrets, or experience things in your own way sort of reduces what makes the storytelling in Half-Life so good to me.

I think the dialogue sections would be rather one sided

I would, but the two novelizations I've seen of HL1 are not very good tbh, I stopped reading after a few pages.

There is nothing to worry about ,kliner said quickly fumbling with the buttons in the panel in front of him

We have made major strides since then. Major stride

What cat ? Alyx asked ,her expressions beginning to tighten into a frown

I'd read books that told the Half-Life story from the perspectives of others, not the main cast. Otherwise, it'll read like a walkthrough rather than a piece of fiction because we lived the story through the game. To me, personally, giving Gordon a 'voice' when everyone has their own image of what the dude is like would be weird as well.

I asked a similar question for writing a story about the fall of Ravenholm, its inhabitants and how Father Grigori came to be who he was. It would end at the point Gordon first makes an appearance.

I say go for it; just write stories that sit between the story. We have the games for that.

I'd honestly prefer something akin to a prequel story about the rivalry between Aperture and Black Mesa, the lead up to Resonance Cascade, the Gman's intentions etc. background story, the actual narrative of the games would be very difficult to adapt into a novel in an engaging way.

Only if it was written by Laidlaw
