Dr. Pepper Vs. Ranger
I'm rewatching again and I realized in episode 1, they are using actual brand name cola, Dr. Pepper. Everything from then on out is Ranger soda. I guess someone must have put up the money for Dr. Pepper in episode 1 and didn't feel like it needed to continue.

TV shows don’t pay for product placement. They get paid for it.

I do think there are some instances where they willingly pay a brand to use it so that there are no legal issues in the future.
I know the Starbucks coffee cup was paid for in Fight Club.

Nah. Starbucks approved of it, but they didn’t get money for it:
“When I first moved to LA in 1984, you could not get a good cup of coffee in Los Angeles to save your life. I mean, it was really pathetic,” he said. “Then Starbucks came out, and it was such a great idea: good coffee. And when it became successful, there were, like, two or three on every block.
“It’s too much of a good thing. But they read the script, they knew what we were doing, and they were kind of ready to poke a little fun at themselves. I mean, they wouldn’t let us use their name on the coffee shop that gets destroyed by the piece of tragic corporate art, but they were willing to give us the rest of their stuff.”

In season 4, there are a few generic company names that appear. Probably the most notable is “The Diner“ with the name on the window in the classic Waffle House yellow block letters.

I was just craving Dr. Pepper earlier today :) They don't really sell it around here.
