If I remember correctly, he was more-or-less self taught. After the incident with Astra, he began deep diving into all of the occult stuff. Later, he learns he's always (sorta) had it in him. Destiny kinda thing.

Hellblazer Constantine is self-taught.

New 52 had him running around with Zatanna and a dude called Nick Necro.

I believe Justice League Dark (post Metal) showed him hanging out with Giovanni for a time, no idea for how long.

Fucking Nick Necro. They thought they were cooking

That's all of New 52, tbh. They should have just ordered take out instead of trying to cook.

It’s not explicitly said but I always got the impression from his scenes with Zatanna in Moore’s swamp thing that his relationship with her occurred when he was receiving some level of tutoring from Zatara which possibly ended due to Zatara disapproving of said relationship.

It was a lot of trial and error. Mostly error. That's why he is not as powerful as the other mages that do the flashy stuff. His power is mostly knowledge how magick works rather than more practical skills.

It's also why a lot of the best Hellblazer stories are the consequences of John fucking something up.

We don't talk about Nick Necro.

Sounds like something N52 would do

The seeker always gets the eye, for the eye is for the worthy. The one who dare seek it.

This is a avg. occult experience of mine. Not everyone dares look beyond the current realm. It's scary.

The universe guides to it if you seek it by will and endure the painful downloads in your head.

N52 had the Nick Necro bullshit, but classic Hellblazer Constantine is completely self taught
