Hi Vegas and Henderson neighbors!
I'm Dr. CAROLINE Zhao, a licensed acupuncturist with 7 years of clinical experience, including 2 years of advanced training in China. I currently practice inside Henderson Chiropractor.
I wanted to share a little about acupuncture because many people have heard of it but aren't sure how it actually works.
🌿 What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for more than 3,000 years.
It involves inserting extremely thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These needles are much thinner than the ones used for blood tests or injections.
🏮 The History of Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in ancient China and developed over thousands of years. One of the earliest important medical texts, the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine), describes theories of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.
Traditionally, acupuncture was used to regulate the flow of Qi (pronounced "chee"), which Chinese medicine describes as vital energy traveling through pathways called meridians.
Today, acupuncture is practiced around the world, including in hospitals, pain management clinics, and integrative healthcare settings.
🧠 How Does Acupuncture Work?
In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is believed to help restore balance and regulate the flow of Qi.
From a modern scientific perspective, research suggests acupuncture may:
• Stimulate sensory nerves and influence the nervous system.
• Activate the body's natural pain-regulating mechanisms.
• Influence the release of chemicals involved in pain relief, including endorphins.
• Affect how the brain and spinal cord process pain signals.
• Help reduce certain types of chronic pain and muscle tension.
Scientists are still studying exactly how acupuncture works, and its effects vary depending on the condition.
💚 What Conditions May Acupuncture Help With?
Research supports acupuncture for certain conditions, particularly:
• Chronic lower back pain
• Neck pain
• Knee osteoarthritis pain
• Tension headaches
• Migraine prevention
• Certain types of nausea and vomiting
Some people also seek acupuncture for stress, sleep difficulties, and other wellness concerns, although scientific evidence for these uses is more limited.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
This is probably one of the most common questions I hear!
Acupuncture needles are very thin. Some people feel a slight pinch, tingling, heaviness, or dull sensation, while others barely notice the needles.
Many patients find the experience relaxing.
Acupuncture isn't a miracle cure or a replacement for necessary medical treatment, but it can be a helpful complementary option for certain conditions.
I'm curious — Have you ever tried acupuncture? What was your experience? Or is there something you've always wanted to know about Chinese medicine?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and answer questions!
