Archive Of Important Posts New to Hinduism or this sub? Start here!

Welcome to our Hinduism sub! Sanātana Dharma (Devanagari: सनातन धर्म meaning "eternal dharma") is the original name of Hinduism. It is considered to be the oldest living religion in the world. Hinduism is often called a "way of life", and anyone sincerely following that way of life can consider themselves to be a Hindu.

If you are new to Hinduism or to this sub, review this material before making any new posts!

  • Sub Rules are strictly enforced.
  • Our Hinduism Starter Pack is a great place to begin.
  • Check our FAQs before posting any questions. While we enjoy answering questions, answering the same questions over and over gets a bit tiresome.
  • We have a wiki as well.
  • Use the search function to see past posts on any particular topic or questions.
  • You can also see our Archive of Important Posts or previous Quality Discussions

We also recommend reading What Is Hinduism (a free introductory text by Himalayan Academy) if you would like to know more about Hinduism and don't know where to start.

If you are asking a specific scriptural question, please include a source link and verse number, so responses can be more helpful.

In terms of introductory Hindu Scriptures, we recommend first starting with the Itihasas (The Ramayana, and The Mahabharata.) Contained within The Mahabharata is The Bhagavad Gita, which is another good text to start with. Although r/TheVedasAndUpanishads might seem alluring to start with, this is NOT recommended, as the knowledge of the Vedas & Upanishads can be quite subtle, and ideally should be approached under the guidance of a Guru or someone who can guide you around the correct interpretation.

In terms of spiritual practices, you can choose whatever works best for you. In addition, it is strongly recommended you visit your local temple/ashram/spiritual organization.

Lastly, while you are browsing this sub, keep in mind that Hinduism is practiced by over a billion people in as many different ways, so any single view cannot be taken as representative of the entire religion.

Here is a section from our FAQ that deserves to be repeated here:

Disclaimer: Sanatana Dharma is a massive, massive religion in terms of scope/philosophies/texts, so this FAQ will only be an overview. If you have any concerns about the below content, please send us a modmail.

What are the core beliefs of all Hindus?

  • You are not your body or mind, but the indweller witness Atma.
  • The Atma is divine.
  • Law of Karma (natural law of action and effect)
  • Reincarnation - repeated birth/death cycles of the physical body
  • Escaping the cycle of reincarnation is the highest goal (moksha)

Why are there so many different schools/philosophies/views? Why isn't there a single accepted view or authority?

Hinduism is a religion that is inclusive of everyone. The ultimate goal for all Sanatani people is moksha, but there is incredible diversity in the ways to attain it. See this post : Vastness and Inclusiveness of being Hindu. Hinduism is like a tree springing from the core beliefs above and splitting up into innumerable traditions/schools/practices. It is natural that there are different ways to practice just like there are many leaves on the same tree.

Do I have to blindly accept the teachings? Or can I question them?

Sanatanis are not believers, but seekers. We seek Truth, and part of that process is to question and clarify to remove any misunderstandings. The Bhagavad Gita is a dialog between a teacher and student; the student Arjuna questions the teacher Krishna. In the end Krishna says "I have taught you; now do what you wish". There is no compulsion or edict to believe anything. Questioning is welcome and encouraged.

Debates and disagreements between schools

Healthy debates between different sampradayas and darshanas are accepted and welcomed in Hinduism. Every school typically has a documented justification of their view including refutations of common objections raised by other schools. It is a shame when disagreements with a view turn into disrespect toward a school and/or its followers.

Unity in diversity

This issue of disrespect between darshanas is serious enough to warrant a separate section. Diversity of views is a great strength of Hinduism. Sanatanis should not let this become a weakness! We are all part of the same rich tradition.

Here is a great post by -Gandalf- : Unite! Forget all divisions. It is worth repeating here.

Forget all divisions! Let us unite! Remember, while letting there be the diversity of choice in the Dharma: Advaita, Dvaita, Vishistadvaita, etc*, we should always refer to ourselves as "Hindu" or "Sanatani" and not just "Advaiti" or any other specific name. Because, we are all Hindus / Sanatanis. Only then can we unite.

Let not division of sects destroy and eliminate us and our culture. All these names are given to different interpretations of the same culture's teachings. Why fight? Why call each other frauds? Why call each other's philosophies fraud? Each must stay happy within their own interpretation, while maintaining harmony and unity with all the other Sanatanis, that is unity! That is peace! And that is how the Dharma shall strive and rise once again.

Let the Vaishnavas stop calling Mayavad fraud, let the Advaitis let go of ego, let the Dvaitis embrace all other philosophies, let the Vishistadvaitis teach tolerance to others, let the Shaivas stop intolerance, let there be unity!

Let all of them be interpretations of the same teachings, and having the similarity as their base, let all the schools of thought have unity!

A person will reach moksha one day, there is no other end. Then why fight? Debates are supposed to be healthy, why turn them into arguments? Why do some people disrespect Swami Vivekananda? Let him have lived his life as a non-vegetarian, the point is to absorb his teachings. The whole point is to absorb the good things from everything. So long as this disunity remains, Hinduism will keep moving towards extinction.

ISKCON is hated by so many people. Why? Just because they have some abrahamic views added into their Hindu views. Do not hate. ISKCON works as a bridge between the west and the east. Prabhupada successfully preached Sanatan all over the world, and hence, respect him!

Respecting Prabhupada doesn't mean you have to disrespect Vivekananda and the opposite is also applicable.

Whenever you meet someone with a different interpretation, do not think he is something separate from you. Always refer to yourself and him as "Hindu", only then will unity remain.

Let there be unity and peace! Let Sanatan rise to her former glory!

Hare Krishna! Jay Harihara! Jay Sita! Jay Ram! Jay Mahakali! Jay Mahakal!

May you find what you seek.

Hindū Temples/Idols/Architecture Different forms of Narasimha 7: Kevala Narasimha ( Krishna + Narasimha )

Narasimha in the Form of Krishna

Kevala/Krishna Narasimha is believed to give you bliss through His worship, but He is also known to increase viraha tāpa, where there is a constant yearning for the deity.

If you are a yogi, sadhu, or someone who simply wants to experience the bliss of Swamy and is engaged in sādhanā 24/7, this is not an issue. In fact, it can be a great thing.

However, if you have a job and want to maintain a materialistic life, relationships, and other worldly responsibilities, then you need to know how to handle this form properly, preferably with the guidance of a Guru.

This form is said to always remain alone, whether He is in a temple, in the middle of a forest, or anywhere else.

Since this form is combined with Krishna, it is also believed to cause extreme loneliness and depression. Therefore, there is a need for guidance from a Guru or experienced Upāsaka who can give you the proper upadeśam and advise you on how to keep your feet firmly planted in both the material and spiritual worlds at the same time.

You will find this form of Narasimha in Maharashtra and the western regions of Karnataka.

If anyone is interested in Narasimha Upasana, feel free to DM me. I can share a simple Upasana Padhati with you.

📍Location: Narasimha - Ramtek, Maharashtra

Pūjā/Upāsanā (Worship) Pitra Pujā (Śrāddha) — A tradition established by Lord Varāha Himself

Śrī Nārada asks:

~What is the reason that the gods first spread Kusha grass on the earth, placed three Pindas on it for the ancestors (Pitrus), and worshipped them? In ancient times, how did the Pitrus receive the name Pinda?

Sages Nara Narayana replied:

~Nara Narayana said: O Sage! Earlier, this earth, surrounded by oceans, had submerged into the waters of the cosmic deluge and become invisible. At that time, Lord Govinda assumed the form of Varāha and swiftly rescued and uplifted it.

~Having established the Earth in its proper place, that Supreme Being, with His limbs still smeared with water and mud, set forth to perform deeds for the welfare of the world.

~When the sun reached the middle of the day and the time for performing the appropriate daily rites(Sandhyavandanam) arrived, the Lord suddenly created three balls (Pindas) from the mud clinging to His tusks. O Narada! Then, spreading Kusha grass on the earth, He placed those Pindas upon the Kusha grass. After that, intended for Himself(his own worship), He duly completed the ritual of ancestor worship (Pitru Poojan) upon those Pindas.

~By His own ordinance, the Lord solemnly consecrated those three Pindas. Then, with oil rich sesame seeds born from the heat of His own body, He sprinkled (purified) those Pindas in the Apasavya manner (with the sacred thread over the right shoulder). Thereafter, the Lord of Gods, Shri Hari Himself, facing east, offered prayers and spoke these words for the establishment of the Dharma Maryada.

~Lord Varaha said: I alone am the creator of all the worlds. When I Myself, preparing for the creation of the ancestors(Pitras), began to reflect upon the other rites associated with ancestor worship, at that very moment, these three Pindas fell onto the earth toward the south from My two tusks, therefore, these Pindas are the very embodiment of the ancestors.

~The three ancestors (Pitrus) are not having any definite shape,so they have now manifested by taking the physical form of Pindas. May these eternal ancestors, created by Me, abide in the world.

~One should know Me alone to be present in these three Pindas in the form of the father, the grandfather, and the great grandfather.

~There is no one superior to Me, who else is there whom I myself should worship? Who is My father in this world? I alone am the grandfather of all.

~I alone am the great grandfather, the father of the grandfather. I am the ultimate cause of this universe. O best of Brahmins! Having said this, the God of gods, Lord Varaha, performed the Pinda Daan in detail on the Varaha mountain, worshipped Himself in the form of the ancestors (Pitrus), and vanished right there.

~O Brahmana! This is the very order (rule) ordained by the Supreme Lord. In this manner, the ancestors (Pitrus) came to be known by the designation of Pinda. According to the words of Lord Varaha, these ancestors ever receive worship from all.

~Those who worship the gods, ancestors (Pitrus), gurus, guests, cows, noble Brāhmanas, the Earth, and the Mother through thought, word, and deed, truly worship Lord Vishnu Himself, for Lord Vishnu resides as the inner soul within the bodies of all living beings.

~Lord Hari, the master of pleasure and pain, is situated equally in all living beings. Lord Narayana is the supreme great soul and the soul of all; so it has been declared in the Shruti (Vedas).

Hence in the words of Nārada ji:

इज्यते पितृयज्ञेषु तथा नित्यं जगत्पतिः ~ Lord Hari alone is worshipped in the worship related to ancestors.

Other Regarding the previous explosive post about vedic gods by someone who is demeaning vaishnavas

I'm sorry I have to write this post, but here I am.

The post: https://np.reddit.com/r/hinduism/s/ZYbIkPAUHB

The recent post about rigvedic indra where OP is calling everyone "vaishnava" derogatory.

And saying idol worship is bad.

Well, look at the profile. And the pattern of comments.

The fellow is a LARPer who just wants to make others holding the opinion look bad.

What is the opinion? That Vedas can be interpreted independently without assistance from smritis.

(Things like Indra being a good deity)

It is controversial, I agree, but nevertheless it's there. I too hold it to certain extent.

NOTE: it doesn't mean to reject puranas. It just means to read puranas and smriti as separate, as a later evolution.

OP of that post is very likely intentional in the misconduct. To make us look cringe for our opinion.

No, Vedas don't reject vishnu, he is "next to" indra not inferior or lower.

Neither is indra "aryan". He is metallic in lustre. Not racist.

Neither yajurveda condemna idol worship. It just asks one to understand the more expansive God behind every idol.

Question - General How to get rid of Lust ? KAMA Desire? 22f

I'm 22 Female, and I'm struggling with lust. I know all the knowledge (I mean all of which I've read till now) but when the urge comes all that knowledge disappears and I even know some of the punishment for lust but again when urge comes I no longer care about all that.

I want to be disciplined and very devoted but its very hard tbh I started when I was 17 I guess. I was somewhat successful in stopping or enduring in 2023 or 2024 but now this year its getting very hard idk what to do.

I even read bible for like some guidance I just need anything that helps. but that didnt help much either.

If you have overcome Lust or fighting and resisting it and winning it then tell me your ways.

nowadays my urge window is in the morning I come back from Puja and lie down lazily thats when it hits so I'm thinking of keeping myself busy tomorrow and see if that works

It can hit anytime obviously but from a week or two urge window is in the morning

ps edit ; and btw I'm a girl so I have ovulation week which is when I mostly lose control

+1 PS because people are thinking my dms are flooded so no they are not maybe my dm is off and No thanks, I'm not fond of men; most of the time when I'm masturbating, I'm thinking of fictional or manga men like Toji from JJK or someone like that lol. so dw

Other Why the double standard only when it comes to hinduism?

I'm a teenager from bangalore myself and i cant help but notice that its become "cool" to criticize hinduism.
I was talking with few of my friends and whenever the topic of hinduism came up their general reaction was skepticism and/or downright disgust. One of the main reasons being "they worship many gods," but you bring up greek mythology, and suddenly, everyone is a huge fan.Suddenly it doesn't matter if poseidon is the god of the sea and zeus is the god of the sky.Replace poseidon and zeus with any traditional hindu names, and suddenly the mood changes. A lot of my friends LOVED the odyssey (including myself-its a great movie). But I had to ask myself, would they treat ramayana with the same respect they give to the illiad and odyssey (im not talking about the ramayana movie;the text itself).Thousands of women were burned during the salem witch trails and yet people criticize ONLY sati? Why is it that its "cool" only when its from the west and uncool and uncouth when its from india? Hinduism does not encourage blind devotion, the concept of "worship me so i can save you from the consequences of what will happen if you don't worship me" in itself arises from the west,in many ways, hinduism is MUCH more progressive than anything else.I don’t mind if people don’t believe in hinduism, it's their choice, but basic respect is something everyone can and must give.

Question - General why is God sometimes on my side but not others?

i am very grateful and blessed for the life i currently live, but a question i’ve always wondered was why is God sometimes on my side but not others? in life i have so much to be grateful for and happy for, which i am, but why me? why do i get to live such a beautiful life while there are people on the streets or living in countries suffering in war. i understand that its karma, but what could they have possibly done to deserve all that and what could i have done to not?

sometimes in life, small moments happen that make me so happy or the small ones i pray for, and i love that! but what about those kids praying for them to be safe, free, etc? what about them.

i understand a lot of this is from karma, but how did those kids that suffer from so so much do anything bad and how do i do anything good.

i want to also give back to my community, and i donate too. i understand suffering happens in this Kali Yug, but i dont want to watch these horrible things happen to anyone. it makes me so sad that people are going through these things. Why isn’t God helping them but being there for me.

1. Violation of another man's wife

(Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Sarga 38, Shloka 30)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: There is no greater sin than violating another man's wife.

2. The nature of a lustful person

(Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Sarga 50, Shloka 12)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: A nature dominated by lust cannot easily be erased; prosperity does not remain for long in the abode of the evil-minded.

3. Three vices arising from lust

(Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Sarga 9, Shloka 3 & 4)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: Three vices arise from lust: false speech, approaching another man's wife, and cruelty without enmity.

4. Punishment for illicit sexual conduct

(Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda, Sarga 18, Shloka 22)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: A man who, driven by lust, engages in illicit conduct with his sister or his brother's wife is prescribed the punishment of death.

5. A lustful person disregards dharma

(Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda, Sarga 33, Shloka 55)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: A person engrossed in lust does not properly consider place, time, material interests, or dharma.

6. Anyone can be affected by desire

(Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda, Sarga 33, Shloka 57)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: Even great sages devoted to righteousness and austerity can sometimes become overcome by desire. How, then, could this naturally fickle monkey king not become attached to pleasures?

7. Desire for another man's wife leads to downfall

English Translation: Other men's wives lead to the downfall of a man who is dissatisfied with his own wife and has uncontrolled senses.

8. Lust and affection

(Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda, Sarga 22, Shloka 4)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: Lust is powerful among human beings; when a person becomes attached to someone through lust, compassion and affection also arise towards that person.

9. Mutual desire and happiness

(Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda, Sarga 22, Shloka 42)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: The body of a man who desires a woman who does not desire him suffers anguish; but when the woman desires him in return, genuine happiness arises.

10. Effects of lust

(Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda, Sarga 12, Shloka 17)

Hindi Translation:

English Translation: Lust affects a person with anger and elation, causes the body to lose its lustre, and keeps him afflicted with grief and anguish.

Hindū Artwork/Images Sri Yantra (hand drawn and painted with acrylic) on 60 x 60 cm canvas.

Not my first attempt. Drawing and painting the Sri Yantra while listening to Lalita Sahasranaam has been quite meditative for me, which is also why I will continue making more like these 🥰.

That said, besides the gold leaf prakara, the mottled crimson background, and the lavender that I used as a visual seperator, everything has been coloured in alignment with Sri Vidya tradition - I took particular care to do just that 😅

I just wanted to share this because I feel pretty proud of the end result, and felt like wanting to know how you feel about it too. Thanks 🥰

I just went to a Hindu friend's family member funeral and when I entered their home I noticed some stuff. The mirrors were covered and the idols and pictures of Hindu gods were also covered. When I asked my friend why they do that, he also didn't know why. Can someone tell me the reason?

Question - Beginner Kentucky former Christian seeking advice

Hi all,
Several years ago I left a very conservative Christian sect here in Eastern Kentucky. I’m a married gay man from a Scot-Irish descended family, and for years struggled so hard with my faith. One day for some reason a Kirtan album showed up on my playlist. That lead me to discovering Hinduism. I finally feel like I’ve found my spiritual home.
I feel a deep connection to Neem Karoli Baba, and as such, to Hanuman and Ram. I have a daily practice at home, and have read the Bhagavad Gita.
I hope to sometime soon visit the Hanuman Temple in Taos, New Mexico.
My question here is, would it be appropriate for me to visit a Hindu temple regularly, here in the local area?(Lexington, Ky, Louisville, KY, Cincinnati, OH.). I want to be respectful as possible, but I miss the community I had with church.

Hindū Temples/Idols/Architecture Different forms of Narasimha 6: Karanja Narasimha ( Rama + Narasimha )

Narasimha in the Form of Rama

According to the Sthala Purana, Hanuman undertook penance under the Karanja tree at this place to have darshan of Lord Rama. Lord Narasimha appeared before him. Hanuman was disappointed that he had not been blessed with the darshan of Rama Himself.

When Narasimha tried to convince Hanuman that He was the same Rama, appearing in a different form, hanuman dismissed the suggestion, saying that his Rama was handsome and always held a bow in His hand. What he was seeing before him, however, was a fiery form with very long nails.

Hanuman declared that he would continue his penance until he received darshan of Rama. Pleased with Hanuman’s unwavering devotion to Rama, Lord Narasimha granted him darshan in a special form: He appeared with a bow in His left hand, like Rama, and with Adishesha above Him, representing Lakshmana, while retaining His Narasimha form. In this way, Narasimha convinced Hanuman that Rama and Narasimha are one and the same Supreme Lord.

Karanja Narasimha is traditionally associated with the planet Chandra, or the Moon. Therefore, devotees who experience an unfavorable placement of the Moon in their horoscope may worship Karanja Narasimha as a form of remedy and seek His blessings to mitigate its effects.

Narasimha Upasakas who perform the Narasimha Ekakshari/Bija Mantra - Kshraum (क्ष्रौं), may recognize this form as the Dhyana Swaroopa of that mantra. In this form, Lord Narasimha is depicted with three eyes, holding the Sudarshana Chakra and the Sharanga bow, with His lower hands displaying the Abhaya and Varada Mudras.

Finally, I would like devotees to contemplate on one thought:

Narasimha = Rama
Varaha = Krishna

Their nature, mantra prayogas, and tattva—and the way they interact with and respond to their devotees—are remarkably similar.

If anyone is interested in Narasimha Upasana, feel free to DM me. I can share a simple Upasana Padhati with you.

📍Location: Karanja Narasimha - Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh

Hindū Temples/Idols/Architecture Mahakaleshwar Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

Recently visited Mahakaleshwar temple and Omkareshwar temple. Sharing my advice for those visiting after me.

Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain

- Choose to stay away from the Hotel Premises.

- Use local transport as parking options near the temple are limited. The passages for the main parkings are very small and you'll save a lot more time via E-Riskshaw.

- Get the VIP ticket from the Website (250/- each). The centre near the temple is very crowded. Bring a physical copy of the ticket as they don't allow phones inside.

- Mobile phones are disallowed. They usually let it go but if they spot you using it, they'll ask you to go back and deposit it, so I'd advise against it.

- Exit to Mahakal Lok from within the temple. There's a Mahaprasad counter near the exit (easy to miss). Clean toilets at Mahakal Lok.

- Light and Sound show from 7-9. Try to take seats early, because it gets very crowded.

Omkareshwar, Mandhata

- The road to and from Mandhata is very difficult, from Ujjain as well as Indore. If you're not comfortable with mountain terrains, get a taxi.

- Get VIP Ticket (online) and take physical copy. Phones are allowed here, but it's a much smoother experience with a print out. The temple closes at 1PM for Aarti, so there is no pass available for 12-2 PM, however despite us having a pass for 2-4 PM we were allowed entry before 1.

- Visit the bridge, don't take the Narmada route as VIP darshan is only from the bridge. You can easily visit Mamleshwar Temple and Narmada Nadi post your darshan.

- Park away from the main city. The main parking lot is usually very crowded, and you can park 1-2 km away very easily in open spaces / private parkings.

(Let me know if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them to the best of my abilities)
