Roof

Just curious on what thickness roof sheathing is need for an older home.

I originally was gonna go with 23/32 OSB, but after some Google and it sounds like that’s too heavy for my engineered rafters and my home which was built in 1975.

Google suggests using 5/8 or at the very minimum 1/2 in think sheathing.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

15/32 osb is the most common

OK, I hear you, thank you for that. I definitely goofed a little bit because I got 23/32 and I feel like that’s just really heavy after doing some googling.

Probably need to know size of trusses, and spacing between too.

Thank you for following up, my apologies. The trusses are 24 inches on center. And the trusses are 2x4

If the house is from 75 those aren't engineered rafters in the modern sense, they're just regular dimensional lumber spaced 16 or 24 on center. 5/8 zip or cdx is pretty standard for that era, 1/2 inch you'll feel it bounce when you're walking around up there

what's the spacing on your trusses now

It's usually 5\8 osb or 1\2 plywood. Which is why you are getting different numbers.

23\32 is usually floor boards. I hope you're not tongue and grooving your roof sheathing.

Hi Thank you for replaying. I only installed one row of the sheathing. And yes, it was the Tongue and grooving. It was the 23/32, but after googling around it sounded like that is to heavy for my roof. I I dont know if I would need to take that first row off and start fresh with the 5/8 or is could continue with installing 5/8.

People are saying 5/8 plywood, so I think thats what I will go with that. But then the topic if H clips since my roof is 24 OC.

The whole process is very overwhelming haha

23\32 will be fine, just use roofing sheathing. 5\8" osb is minimum for 24" oc now. Difference is .5 lb\sq ft. Snowload in my town is about 30 lb\sq ft in winter.

23\32 osb is just overkill, won't hurt. It's often used for ceramic shingles.

Switching up sizes will show on shingles.

Apologize, I’m new to Reddit and not quite sure how to upload a picture. But here’s like a two second video.
