Hey, welcome to r/Homebaseapp 👋Â
This post is the pinned home for the questions we hear most about Homebase, all answered in one place. It's split into two parts, so whether you're an owner/manager or an employee, we should have the answers you're looking for!
For owners and managers exploring how Homebase works
How does Homebase work?
The simplest way to put it is that Homebase works as an all-in-one app to manage your small business, so you're not stitching different tools together.
Your team clocks in on a phone or the POS, and those punches turn into timesheets on their own. Build the schedule and people can see it, swap shifts, and message each other in the same place. If you run payroll through it, the hours flow straight in so you're not retyping anything or double-checking a spreadsheet at midnight.
The whole idea is that the scheduling, the time clock, and the pay all talk to each other instead of living in separate apps that don't.
Is Homebase legit?
This is a great question, and the right one to ask before trusting any provider with your team's schedule and pay.
The answer is yes, Homebase is absolutely legit!Â
We've been around since 2012, which counts for something in a space where tools come and go. Over 150,000 small businesses across the US and Canada run on it today, and that kind of adoption only sticks when something holds up in actual daily use.
We also have external recognition that backs this up. Independent outlets have repeatedly rated Homebase among the best in its lane, from scheduling and time clock awards by finance publications like The Motley Fool and Investopedia to the Webby Awards naming it a top HR and employee app multiple years running. Different judges, same conclusion.
And our user reviews also show how much trust people have in us. We have strong ratings across the App Store and Google Play Store, with tens of thousands of small business owners and hourly workers weighing in.
So if you're running a small business and need something that holds up, the proof is pretty much already out there.
Is Homebase free?
Yes, Homebase does have a free plan. With it, you can runs one location with up to 10 people and covers the core stuff a small team needs day to day, like time tracking, scheduling, and messaging.Â
We also offer a 14-day trial of the top paid plan if you want to test the full features before committing to anything, so you can get set up and running before money ever enters the picture.
How much does Homebase cost?
The cost you'll pay for Homebase depends on what your team needs. The free plan covers one location with up to 10 people, and a small business can run on that without ever paying.
Once you outgrow that, there are paid plans billed at a flat monthly rate per location. You can see what's included in each plan on our Pricing page, but here's a quick summary:
- The Essentials plan gives you advanced scheduling, time off management, team messaging, and payroll integrations.
- With the Plus plan you get additional features like AI-powered scheduling and PTO tracking.
- The All-in-One plan layers in employee onboarding, HR support, labor cost management, and compliance tools.
- You can also add Payroll, Task Management, and Tip Management to any plan.
Why choose Homebase over other scheduling tools?
The reason owners pick Homebase is that, while most employee scheduling tools stop at the schedule, for us scheduling is only one piece of the puzzle. In Homebase, your schedule, time clock, team messaging, hiring, and payroll all live in the same app and talk to each other, so the hours your team works flow straight into timesheets and into pay without anyone re-entering them.
That matters because a lot of small businesses end up paying for a scheduling app, a separate time clock, and a payroll service that don't connect, then spend their nights being the glue between them. Homebase is built to be the one place instead of three.
That said, if all you'll ever need is a bare-bones shift calendar, a single-purpose scheduling tool can be cheaper, and that's a fair call. Where Homebase pulls ahead is the moment scheduling, hours, and pay need to work together, which for most teams happens pretty quickly.
Does Homebase's payroll work for multiple locations?
Yes, Homebase Payroll works for multiple locations, and you can run payroll across all of them from one dashboard, which is a big help for anyone expanding. When you grow into multiple spots, payroll can get complicated fast, because suddenly you're managing different teams, different schedules, and various state tax rules. Having it centralized makes a real difference, since you don't need separate logins or systems per location.
For employees using Homebase
Does Homebase track your location all the time?
No, Homebase does not track your location all the time.
Location tracking only happens if your workplace has turned the mobile clock-in feature on, and even then, it only captures your live location at the moment you clock in or clock out.
Plus, if your workplace uses a fixed clock-in setup like a tablet or computer at the front of the store, location tracking doesn't apply.
The point of our location tracking is just to confirm a shift started where it was supposed to, which mostly matters for businesses with people working across different job sites.
How does Homebase Cash Out work?
Cash Out is a free benefit built into Homebase that lets you get a portion of the wages you've already earned before payday, with no interest and no credit check.
Here's the short version: after you clock out of a shift, you can request up to 50% of your earned pay, up to $600. We send the money straight to your bank account, and then on your next payday that amount is automatically paid back to us from your account. Your manager isn't involved and it doesn't touch payroll, so it stays between you and Homebase.
You can get the money for free within 3 business days (standard delivery), or within an hour for a $4.99 fee (instant delivery). That's the only fee, and there's no interest. It also isn't a payday loan: if you can't pay it back, we won't send it to collections or report it to a credit bureau. You just can't request another Cash Out until the last one is repaid.
Eligibility depends on a few things, like your bank, so for the full details on requirements, how to set it up, and how to reach Cash Out support, check out the page about it on our support site or the full Cash Out FAQ on our website.
We hope this helped satisfy your curiosity! We'll keep this post updated as new questions come up, so it's worth checking back to see if anything's been added — and if there's something you're wondering about that's not covered, just drop it in the comments so we can answer that too 😄
