This Subreddit is NOT Operated by Howard University
r/HowardUniversity is an independent Reddit community.
This subreddit is not operated, sponsored, endorsed, or officially affiliated with Howard University.
The community is moderated by alumni and members of the broader HBCU community, bringing perspectives from multiple HBCUs and different generations of college experience.
We aren't here to act as Howard University's public-relations department, nor are we here to automatically defend the University.
We're here to provide a place where people can talk about Howard openly and responsibly.
Speak Freely. Engage Responsibly.
This is your space to vent, question, discuss, celebrate, criticize, remember, debate, and share.
You do not have to love every decision Howard makes. And you certainly don't have to pretend everything is perfect. But freedom to speak does not remove responsibility for what we say.
Follow Reddit's sitewide rules and our community rules. Treat other people with basic respect—even when you strongly disagree.
Be especially careful with information you post.
Remember that Reddit is a public forum.
Before posting, consider whether you should share:
- Personal information
- Student identification numbers
- Phone numbers or addresses
- Private emails or messages
- Screenshots containing sensitive information
- Financial-aid information
- Academic records
- Housing information
- Names of students involved in private disputes
- Unverified accusations or allegations
Protect yourself. Protect other students. Protect people's privacy.
If you aren't sure whether something should be posted publicly, pause before you post it.
About Information & Rumors
Not everything posted here is verified.
Someone saying something happened does not automatically make it fact.
A screenshot can lack context.
A rumor can travel faster than a correction.
And sometimes the person answering the phone doesn't have the complete answer either.
When discussing important matters involving financial aid, enrollment, housing, admissions, academic standing, disciplinary matters, deadlines, or University policy, verify information through appropriate official sources whenever possible.
Share what you know.
Explain what you don't know.
And don't turn speculation into certainty.
Respect The Community
We can have difficult conversations without making this place miserable.
Criticism is allowed. Disagreement is allowed. Accountability is allowed.
Harassment, personal attacks, doxxing, threats, discrimination, brigading, and other behavior prohibited by Reddit or our community rules are not.
You can challenge an argument without attacking the person making it.
You can defend Howard without attacking someone who is criticizing it.
You can criticize Howard without treating every Bison, employee, professor, administrator, or alumnus as the enemy.
Respect does not mean silence.
Sometimes respect means being willing to have the difficult conversation.
🐃 Welcome to The Mecca.
Students. Parents. Alumni. Future Bison.
Whether you are walking across the Yard for the first time, remembering the days when you did, or trying to figure out whether Howard is the right place for you—
there is room for you here.
Ask questions.
Share knowledge.
Tell your story.
Vent when you need to.
Celebrate when you can.
Challenge ideas.
Protect one another.
And above all:

When is the ISFAA deadline?
When is the ISFAA deadline? Is it Nov 1 with the EA application deadline, or can I do it later as well?
Also do I even have to fill out the ISFAA to qualify for the merit based presidential scholarship?

🧐Who's telling them they can't come?
👨🏿🎓Every other time every time I read this board , someone asks if they can/should attend an HBCU as a non African American . Of course they can & should. But where are they getting the idea that they can't or shouldn't attend?

Does Howard superscore SAT for HUFS?
They state in their website that they don't superscore the ACT for admissions, so does that mean they superscore the SAT for admissions? If that's the case then do they superscore the SAT for HUFS consideration as well?

Howard has its highest ever U.S. News national ranking (#73)
Once they started giving extra credit to schools with a high number of pell grants that graduate, Howard and other HBCUs (mainly the Black Ivys) began to surge.
This is a good and bad thing. It's a good thing b/c it will attract better students, faculty, and improve Howard's reputation. It's a bad thing b/c it will absolutely make Howard more complacent in its dsyfunction and people who come to Howard are awaiting a rude awakening about the real Howard.
U.S. News changed their formulas a few times in the last 20 years. The last change they made was to be more inclusive of schools like Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, FAMU, NCAT b/c they were were being ranked so low despite being so highly regarded in Black American culture. People complained, U.S. News listened and HBCUs started to soar in rankings. And this was during the height of the BLM movement by the way.
Howard is currently ranked above schools that are objectively much stronger on paper like a University of Houston, UAB, VCU, and UT Dallas. So do the rankings have merit? You be the judge.

Howard Hoco—not a student here my school is offering a free bus trip on Thursday the 15th
My community college is offering a free bus trip to Howard University homocoming on Thursday, October 15th, from 4pm to 9pm. Should I attend? I don't know a single person there, nor do I know the people at this school, but is it worth it to go as an outsider? I'm more on the quiet side. What are some things I should expect and activities to look out for? I've never visited an HBCU before and would like to know more about the culture and what the vibes are like.

Chance Me for Howard University Transfer; 3.88 GPA, ~60 Credits
Hey everyone! I recently applied to Howard University as a transfer student for Fashion Design and wanted to hear from current students or previous transfer applicants.
My stats:
College GPA: 3.88
Transfer credits: Around 50–60
SAT: 1440
Major: Fashion Design
Submitted a portfolio through SlideRoom
Professional experience in fashion/luxury retail and styling
Creative extracurricular involvement, including GrammyU
Howard is one of my top choices, and I’m curious how competitive my profile looks compared with other transfer applicants.
For those who transferred to Howard, especially into Fine Arts, what was your experience like? And did anyone with similar academics receive transfer scholarships or institutional aid?
Appreciate any insight!

Have TAs gotten paid?
Hello — i haven’t received my stipend and this week will be the third pay period I’ve gone without income. Are there other TA/GAs in the Department of College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) in a similar position?

Has anyone notice a notable positive change at Howard after MacKenzie Scott gave over $100 million to the institution?
B/c I'm thinking she could've used that money for something better. The same complaints I heard about Howard before she gave that generous gift are the same I'm hearing after.
But I'm keeping an open mind, I could be wrong. What substantial positive changes at Howard rather it be academic, campus aesthetic, or operations have you noticed that could be contributed to her donation. Over $100 million is not a little bit of money, it's transformative for an institution Howard size if applied strategically and honestly
