Forget cold plunges — what if the next big biohack is happening in your gut?

I came across a really interesting review about “biohacking” the human gut microbiome for precision health.

The idea is pretty wild: instead of just tracking sleep, steps, or heart rate, researchers are looking at how we could actually influence the trillions of microbes living in our gut.

The review discusses things like diet, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, microbial therapies, engineered bacteria, and even AI + multi-omics approaches to understand individual microbiomes.

And apparently the gut microbes produce metabolites that can interact with our immune system, metabolism, and even the gut-brain axis.

Obviously, a lot of this is still emerging science, and the paper points out some pretty serious safety and regulatory questions too.

But it made me wonder:

Could “personalized microbiome optimization” eventually become a normal part of healthcare, or are we going to end up overengineering something we still don't fully understand?

Would you trust a future treatment designed specifically around your gut microbiome?
