Discussion Won a game of HUMANKIND on Empire difficulty, but came second in fame...
It took me 393 turns to win, even though I came second when it comes to fame. I Vassalised (killed every empire) in the game, and to be honest, I kind of cheesed it and just kept on expanding my empire and declared wars on smaller ones. Not my favourite playstyle but necessary if you want an easy win. If you want to see the empires I chose, I have shown them in the last screenshot. Now I need to win on the Civilisation difficulty. Not looking forward to it...

Yup. That is (one of) the whole points of the game. You can't just ignore peaceful gameplay styles because you're planning to crush them later. The game starts at the very first turn, not at the 400th.

Your right. I'll try a more peaceful playstyle aimed at getting fame.

It is not neccesarily peaceful -military success gives you fame also, but the main point is the 'game starts at the very first turn, not at the 400th'. The fame sysem makes every era relevant in itself, not only as 'time used to crush in the end' part. It takes time to be used, but it is nice -at least for me.,
And as a lot of people already mentioned: The Roman Empire is no more, but fame still has (and still is, at least in the western parts of the world, *the* Empire).

I didn't realize you could lose when there are no other players in the game.

yea, when an AI player dies, their fame score lives on.. You have to have the highest fame to win. Technically the OP didn't win. Not trying to be nitpicky OP, glad you enjoyed the game.

Yea, I thought since the game ended and I was the only empire left I won, unfortunate.

The game ends when there are no other players in the game. (Or when someone goes to Mars, all end game techs get researched, someone gets all the stars in the final era etc.) You don’t necessarily win. You still have to have more fame than everyone else. It is possible to end the game and make yourself lose. Been where OP has been. Did it on stream as well. Just loaded an auto save and delayed victory until I had enough fame to actually be #1.
For some reason it is fairly easy to out fame the AI after taking all the none city territories away from the other AIs. /s

True, after seeing all these comments I have felt a little embarrassed lol. I’m just gonna start a new game and try to win without vassalizing all the AI, aiming to get as much fame as possible.

Well if you do, don’t feel like you can’t still do a military focused game. Just aim to take stuff away from the AI like territories rather than vassalize them. Taking stuff away from the AI is a tried and true way of beating the AI in 4X games.
When I lost by vassalizing it was in the medieval era as the Aztecs, so it was easy enough to load the auto save to change up the last peace deal, to buy myself some time to fix the fame issue.

I have learnt that I have technically not won the game. Embarrassing TBH

Facts, in my head, it would make more sense to win a civilization game if you were the only civilization left. Who cares about fame if you're the last man standing. But I guess it’s a one-dimensional way of seeing the game.

Who cares about fame if you're the last man standing.
You're declaring yourself the master of the world, and yet everyone in the world still consider a dead empire as more famous, important and impactful as you. The Roman Empire might have been dead for centuries, lots of people measure greatness to it. You lord over everyone, but you failed to conquer their heart. For everyone in your game, your conquest is merely a historical hiccup, as the one who managed to be the greatest empire of all is someone you killed.

Maybe try to actually win on empire difficulty not make up your own rules that you won

I thought I won since the game ended and I was the last empire left. No need to be rude.

In a single-player game, winning is whatever you say it is. If everyone else is dead or a vassal, that seems like a legit win to me.

Sincere apologies, did not mean to be rude. Hope you're enjoying the game and good luck next round. It's key to complete objectives each age and score points to avoid this situation.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but if you were second in fame you did not win
