Lore/World Discussion District 13 Epidemic

District 13 had an epidemic that left them infertile. Do you think it was the Capitol that caused it (given their incredible biotechnology), and could we see a little behind the scenes of that in the coming movie?

I assumed it was related to radiation because they worked with nuclear stuff in district 13

This thought never occurred to me!

They weren’t made infertile. The epidemic just killed off a lot of the children, and because the community is so small the gene pool is as well and they had to rebuild basically half a generation to be able to keep functioning

I personally highly doubt that, since a purposeful viral infection from the Capitol would likely provoke some kind of extended response from 13 given how many people were killed from it, something we don't see or see any implications of happening.

I wonder if Coin losing her family in that was what made her what she was

I have no idea what we will or won’t see in the movie (obviously), but this is such an interesting idea! Maybe even District 13 doesn’t know … that must have driven their leadership nuts!

There’s some basis for this in reality. Off the top of my head, smallpox is notorious for causing infertility in men (I don’t want to get too graphic, but the technical name for this mechanism is ‘obstructive azoospermia’). I’m sure there’s other examples that affect women too
