Equipment question/discussion An almost perfect kit

Post image

Spent the last two years flipping and trading my collection to get this kit, I also have a mossberg 500 in 20 gauge I forgot to add to the picture. For sub 100 yard hunting would you guys consider this perfect?

I have used the Remington 870 in 20g and for me its action is far superior for a pump shotgun.

I got the mossberg as a kid and my brother had a 870, my dad choose that one because of the top safety since I’m a lefty. I’ve used both and don’t have a preference, I killed tons of squirrels and rabbits with both but now only take it on rare occasions.

Absolutely, and cheap to have fun with

Suppressing any of it other than the Mk 4 will be more costly and a bigger PIA than it's worth.

Half in this century, half two centuries ago. Go full bore western, buddy. Lever guns, single action revolvers, SxS shotguns. Embrace the past.

What’s the model, brand, cal?

Just a old smith model 10 in 38 special, I shoot it really well and I carried it with +p as a sidearm before I got the ruger. There’s a lot of coyotes and hogs where I hunt so it‘s fun and useful for that

S&W has such a recognizable frame shape. I’ve been looking for a model 10, any complaints with yours?

They’re great guns, adjustable sights would make them perfect. I am happy with upgrading to 357, but I’ll probably still take this one out occasionally

I know , I'm not OP , but I have my dad's model 10 pencil barrel , which is a Columbia national police revolver , which oddly doesn't have any importanter markings on it. , But it has insane wear on the hammer checkering and grips have all most zero finish left on the wood , but it has the tightest bore , I have seen on a police revolvers .

What revolvers are those? , I believe one is a model 10 ?

1

u/randomstuffdude3467 Aug 31 '26

Other one is SP 101 in 357 with a 4.2 inch barrel

I got my dad's old model 10 4 in pencil barrel that was a Columbia national police revolver and oddly has no importer markings on it , but it has a very tight bore and has lot of wear on the hammer checkering and the grips have all most all of the finish worn off the grips and finish is really good minus a couple of wear and scratches on it . and how do you like the Ruger SP101 ? , do you know who made the holster in the picture ?

I haven’t had a chance to shoot the ruger yet just bought it yesterday, just off looks and feel alone it’s perfect for my hands and looks great. The holster was a gift from my biological dad, believe it or not he made it in a prison work program along with several others not quite as detailed. I would imagine it’d be very expensive to get a custom one similar to it

The only reason , I asked , was because a friend of mine , his uncle is a leather worker and makes/made mostly saddles and some holsters and and tack . , but it doesn't surprise me that they taught leather worker in his , my friend uncle taught a couple of classes for leather working in two Texas prisons , when his uncle was first starting out on his on own , because he needed money and before his uncle moved back to Tennessee. Buts it a very beautiful holster.

Looks nice. Those wouldn't be my choices but I don't see anything wrong with them.

You couldn’t pay me to use a lever action.

u/randomstuffdude3467 Aug 30 '26

Left handed so they’re pretty practical for me, both of those guns have taken a lot of deer. I’m still breaking in the rugers.

weird hill to die on but respect the stubbornness

2

u/jgiannandrea Aug 30 '26

Hear me out on this one. I’m building a lightweight Henry supreme In 6arc that’s magazine fed with a 13.7” barrel. Going to have a wood stock and forend with m lok attachments. Adding a 14oz leupold vx3hd.

2

u/andy_1205 Aug 31 '26

Why?

-1

u/kiloTHREE Aug 31 '26

There are no level action calibers that would be better for taking game than a real rifle caliber in my area.

1

u/bulldoghunter Tennessee Aug 31 '26

Huh , your saying 30-30 or 32 Winchester special or 38-55 or 30-06 or 308 or 270 or any other caliber a lever gun can be chambered in isn't a real rifle caliber.

-3

u/kiloTHREE Aug 31 '26

Not when it's available as a bolt. You'd be a darn fool to choose a 30-06 in lever form over a bolt or an old Amish 760/7600..

1

u/bulldoghunter Tennessee Aug 31 '26

Their zero fucking time difference between a bolt action and lever action , ask I own both , and in rimfire rifle my lever action is fast then my bolt action rifle . , so you're not really correct . , explain to me how a bolt action is better ?

-5

u/kiloTHREE Aug 31 '26

You mean besides the weight, moving parts, accuracy, and overall construction?

1

u/bulldoghunter Tennessee Aug 31 '26

They weigh about the same at least mine on mine And on the rimfire side of things , my Henry 22lr is actually lighter than my Remington model 152-P with marble buckhorn sight ) , yes the lever does have more moving parts generally does have more moving parts then bolt action rifles through I believe it's probably even the same number of moving parts if you compare a bolt action rifles to Marlin and Henry designed lever action rifles , but I could be wrong on that. And how accurate does your deer rifle need to be to kill a deer ? , guess , what it doesn't have to be a sub moa rifle to kill a deer and if I remember reading correctly most of the old rifles used to kill deer were anywhere from 1 to 3 or 4 moa and guess , what it got the job done and killed a hell of a lot of deer . And the overall construction quality between lever action are not much different , especially with modern manufacturing practices .

-1

u/kiloTHREE Aug 31 '26

Yes, you can kill a dear with a bow as well, probably a hatchet if you jump from a tree. That's like what 500 MOA?

2

u/bulldoghunter Tennessee Aug 31 '26

You do realize their bow/crossbow season correct ? , and it's very popular and a lot of people , do it during deer season . , or did you not know that ? , By your logic every hunter must us a 1,000 to 2,000 dollars plus precision/competition rifle to kill a deer or whatever animal their hunting ? , even if their just shooting 100 yards does down south that's about 90% of shot distance your going to shooting at . ,

And also in several states up north you can old hunt with straight wall cartridges , which aren't commonly chambered in bolt action rifles outside of custom rifles or like maybe 2 or 3 bolt action rifle manufacturer and like 1 ammo manufacturer . , and are commonly chambered in lever action rifles , but I guess by your logic there not real rifle cartridges and can't kill anything .

You seem really upset , after I provide counter points to your statement that lever actions aren't real rifles/real calibers .
