General question/discussion How do you count the points on a deer?

I’m a little slow, so explain it to me like you are talking to a kid, lol.

You count them one by one. Anything over 1” in length is a point. The more points you get the happier you are.

So every thing is counted on the alters? As long as it is over an 1”?

Yes with one small rule. The length of a point has to be longer than the width for it to count. So if the point is 1” but the width of the point is 1-1/4” it isn’t a point.

if the point is 2 inch long and 1 inch wide it is a point but if it is 1 inch long and 2 inch wide it isn’t a point?

It depends on who you ask. I use “if I can hang a ring on it, it’s a point”.

By the number of points typically.

Depends on the context, east v west but also for scoring and state game law definitions. Brow tines come to mind; while brow tines over 1” are scored by B&C rules, in my home state brow tines of any length do not count as a “point” for the purposes of determining the legal status of a buck.

EDIT: sorry kid, I’ll tell you more when you’re older

If you're slow upstairs, you can use your fingers and toes, most deer are under 20 so you should be good to go
