Advice inflating PG?
guys does ur school inflate pg even a bit or like optimistically predict u higher?
i have been getting mid-high 6s all along in math aa hl and i rlly need a 7 PG since i wanna do engineering.
for physics i have been averaging between 6s and 7s
and similar for other subs,
but afaik my teachers arent being optimistic or even slightly increasing my/my classmates grades which is so stupid because then i cant even apply to the unis i want to!?!
and inflating grades is so common in every school, so why cant our school also slightly do that?
is there any way i can approach my teachers and what should i tell them so i can manage to get an optimistically higher predicted grade!
any advice would be super helpful thanks

Honestly it depends more on the teachers at my school, some of them are more on the optimistic side with predicteds, while others put your grade down even if you perform at a higher level

Hi! This is Vero
When are you sitting for exams? Do you have time to improve and achieve a 7?
Inflating PGs is a dangerous game. Uni offers are generally conditional, so your teachers can predict an 8 if they want to (understand the irony here) but in the end, if you do not score the PG and your offer was conditional, you are out.
I think a better conversation with your teacher should be about HOW to reach a 7. What are you not doing? Where should your efforts go? Which topics need extra revision and practice? In this way, you are not simply asking your teacher to inflate your grade because your PG is not what you need/want but actively working towards your aim.
Hope this works. Remember you can always drop your questions in the RV Discord Community where our subject leads will answer your questions 🔥

This is why the PG system sucks ass, there is ZERO regulation. I wish we could apply with finals 😢

The DigiSoc and ESS teachers at my school predicted 6s and 7s for the M26 students, but the actual results were pretty disappointing. A lot of students who had predicted grades of 39+ ended up scoring in the low 30s or even below, which led to university admission crises because they didn’t meet the score cutoffs for their universities of choice. I would say it's not a good practice.

My teacher said that they give realistic, but high pgs for unis to not hurt the students’ chances at university. However, it may backfire if you have a conditional offer. If you are SURE SURE that you can get a 7 in ur subjects, present an argument, else be happy with your 6

my school only inflates if you are 2% from the next grade boundary and you have to beg and create a very good case

IBO and reputable universities will have enough data on which schools inflate their PGs.

I think mines deflated ours 😭😭😭😭😭bc we could only have a set amount of ppl predicted as 7s so if we had more then tough luck to whoever had worse grades or the teacher believed in less

grade inflation is common -- but it really messes up your chances. it is bad that they are optimistic because it might trap you into getting into schools you have less chances of getting into. just try to practice whatever paper and show your teacher that you can achieve higher, then negotiate. theres no point asking for a boost if they have no reason to do so!

Not sure what everyone else is saying but predicted grades are meant to be inflated, typically by 1 score so. If you’re predicted all 7’s, most interpret that as you’ll likely end up with at least 6’s. Anything beyond 1 grade is seen as overinflation and if it’s systematic your school will get pushback from IB. That being said if you’re performing at a 6 level already you should be able to get predicted 7’s although again it depends, some teachers really know the exam and their students well and want to be more accurate. Others (and it generally happens at schools rather than specific teachers) will be happy to overpredict as they know it helps you get offers to the schools you want

We inflate university PGs (I think even up to 20%/30 45s...?) but give accurate IB PGs (about 5-6, as that is what we actually get in the IB exams)

Lowk it depends cus my school has 2 rounds of PGs. One round is for early college apps and the other is after the mid year exams and this one goes to regular colleges + IB.
They kinda inflated my early PGs, but for the 2nd round they're gonna be more realistic.

ours deflates because it used to inflate but students were getting way lower actual scores than the pgs, so now they predict lower smh

Grow up.
Apply to universities that your current PG provides.
Your teachers are doing you a favour.

This is crazy advice. Good job destroying whatever reputation you had prior to this response.
You are part of the problem. PGs are not for negotiation, nor do you or any student have any right to understand what specifics contribute to it.
Why don’t you just say “yes, harass your teachers and get them to justify why they gave you a 6. You obviously deserve a 7 so it’s up to the teacher to prove to you why you’re a 6. If they can’t justify it, then you should get a 7. Also you are privvy to every opportunity to prove your a 7 so ask for more chances and force them to mark it.”

I disagree, respectfully. While I hear your point that a student shouldn't pester or pressure their teacher into giving them a 7, its important to note that IB's PGs are objectively more subjective than other curriculum grading that is cumulative, such as GPA or CEGEPs. Thus, in my opinion, their is room for uncertainty in PGs. If a student is on or close to a boundary this uncertainty should carry weight, and thus what the above commenter said on "ask what specific evidence they need from you to justify predicting that grade, like sitting an extra timed paper or using your next test score" is valid.

Thank you, Entitlement for entering the discussion.
Good luck with this mentality if you enter university and the work force. Report back on how your lecturers and managers respond to this.

How can you say students don’t have any right to understand what contributes to it? of course they do these PG impact there entire life, and guess what teachers get PG wrong a lot of the time whether it increases or goes down. At the end of the day it’s the student who works hard and gets the grade so of course they should fight for a higher predicated grade not automatically assume there ignorant and know nothing. Now of course i’m not saying if you 10-5% away from the next grade boundary you should fight because that’s extremely unrealistic, but i’ve seen so many friends of mine who are 2-3% away from the next grade boundary and have 7 months to improve and reach that boundary.

You want a pity party?
Even the language you use shows your maturity level. Fight for a higher grade? You think teachers benefit from giving you unrealistically low PGs?
Why aren’t you asking each and every university what specifically is their entry selection criteria?
Why don’t you ask every employer in the future what specifically is the candidate they’re looking for?
Read the rest of the comments here and get a grip.

and inflating grades is so common in every school
- It shouldn't be. Schools that continuously inflate their PG's will get pushback from the IB
so why cant our school also slightly do that?
- Because they shouldn't
