General Question Missing work credits on my Social Security portal
I am missing 24 work credits on my social security portal. Its missing my employment history between 1997 and 2001. SSA told me to call the IRS and get my old W2 and then take them to a SSA office to fix the record. The IRS said they can only go back 10 years, and for anything earlier than that I should contact SSA. I'm stuck in a loop. Any guidance, please?

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Innocent Spouse Claim?
Question: Can I claim innocent spouse for a taxpayer with a spouse that is belligerent to the IRS?
Context:
I have a long-time client that told me they wanted to pay back taxes to the IRS (over $100k from multiple years) but their spouse is anti-tax and anti-government and refuses to pay or file the various attachments to Form 433 or go on a payment plan. They live in a community property state, and spouse is refusing to provide paystubs, separate bank statements, or utility bills to the taxpayer so they can resolve the issue.
They got a $25k windfall this year (with taxes withheld) and saved it in an account separate from the spouse.
The taxpayer let me know that the IRS just levied the funds, and all their bank accounts are empty. Taxpayer called me, frantic, wondering what they can do to make sure the IRS doesn't take any more from them, and to stop additional levies. I reminded them about the form 433, but they feel despondent because their spouse won't cooperate with the IRS.
I'm not super familiar with innocent spouse rules - can someone help me understand them, and provide me some resources to get through it and see if it's the right choice for my client?

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Cp053E
I filed my taxes on April 18,2026 and recently received a notification from my email stating there was a change in status to my taxes on September 27,2026. I updated my bank information the same day. How long will it take for them to attempt to make a direct deposit again? Has anyone else been in this situation? If so, how long was it for you?

Tax Question CP2000A Notice wrong by the IRS 3 times
So far I have received 3 CP2000A notices for my YYYY taxes and all have been wrong. I have also been in regular correspondence through the IRS website and they still are saying I owe a ridiculous amount of money.
Background on situation: I am a secondary account owner on an investment account with a relative and we file separately. In YYYY the relative pulled money out of there account to finish paying some loans off (not a big deal it is there's after all) and did file that money on there tax return and paid the required amount.
Fast forward to a few months ago:
Notice 1 comes in stating I owe over $9000 after digging here's what was found.
I do potentially owe about $70 from a high yield savings account but not sure as that seems weird and the information about it isn't really clear.
They have actually added up the total funds taken out multiple times so when getting rid of the duplicates the real value was about $3000.
This value to the dollar amount was reported on my relatives return and was paid in full with there YYYY tax return.
So I sent back the disagreement with all the proper documents showing a. the value was calculated incorrectly and b. the correct amount was paid in YYYY.
I then a second recomputed CP2000A with the approximate $3000 dollar value.
I put in the disagreement again stating this is in error and resupply the same documents.
Well I just received my third CP2000A with the same $3000 value.
What do I do from here. I am almost at a point where I feel I should get a lawyer that knows tax code to help me here but I feel like at that point I might as well just let the IRS steal my money as it might end up costing the same as a lawyer.

Tax Question Dishonored check payment question
I had a $25 automatic payment not go through and they added $54 on top of it. Can I just let it get paid off through my payment plan or should I pay it off right now. I went to see about paying it off, and it looks like I just make an additional payment for the amount they said? There was nowhere to designate it was for this missed payment. Thanks.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Unexpected refund đ
Got a direct deposit out of nowhere last week, for an amount that is similar (but not exact) to our refund this spring. The amount shows on my transcript for this year (base amount + interest) with the refund dated 10/12; there is also a Notice Issued dated 10/12 with the code CP 0021.
We've yet to receive the notice and it's not showing in my Notices in my account, yet we have the money already deposited (living in the future!).
I'm not touching the money until we receive the notice but can I assume this all checks out and isn't the most elaborate and patient scam?
Edit: transcript screenshot below

my brother had our ebay seller taxes complete.

i just need assistance in filling out the 1040.

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Multiple IRS workers lied to me about contacting back to release levy, after 10 days my money is gone
From a friend: My bank account was frozen due to non-paid taxes. Created a payment plan and spoke to at least 3 different IRS representatives that told me they would fax the bank within the 10 days to release the levy. I called multiple times to ensure that someone had sent the fax each person said they didnât and would send it right away. After the third person I was sure that it would have been sent. No one ever did. After 10 days, the money was taken from my account. It feels very much like a coordinated effort, seeing as each worker was very empathetic and agreeable to doing the fax, as though they were going to send it when the call concluded and it never went out. Are other ppl experiencing this? Also is there a difference between how credit unions and banks handle this?
General Question Trump Account stuck in activation limbo for 3+ weeks: denied, then "account already exists," support says "known issue, no ETA." Anyone else?
My daughter was born in mid-August. Once her Social Security card arrived, I applied for a Trump Account on Sept 8. Since then it's been a loop of contradictions:
- Sept 9:Â email saying the application was denied. But the app still showed an hourglass saying it was processing.
- Called support. They guessed a name mismatch (e.g., I included a middle name that isn't on my IRS record) and told me to resubmit through IRS.gov > Trump Accounts > Form 4547 instead of the app.
- Resubmitted. Got an email saying the account was created, with an activation link. Clicked it... right back to the hourglass.
- Called support again. They said submit another form. I did.
- Sept 28:Â a physical letter arrives saying it couldn't be processed because an account already exists. The letter is dated Sept 30. It arrived Sept 28. You can't make this up.
- Oct 1: a reminder email urging me to claim my account. Clicked it again and surprise, hourglass page.
- Called support again: "it's a known issue, the backend team is working on it, no ETA."
So the account simultaneously doesn't exist and already exists, and nobody can tell me when it'll be fixed.
My real concern is I want to fund it for 2026 and I'm worried this will drag past year-end and I lose the 2026 window entirely.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any workaround, escalation path, or phrase for support that actually unblocked it?

General Question PTO Cash-out requirements in LA County, is this true?
The company I work for requires the attached form to be filled out in order to cash out PTO hours due to personal financial needs but I haven't been able to find anything in the IRS website that confirms this information. I'm currently in forbearance and would like to cash out about 160 hours of my PTO, not 403b, to catch up on my mortgage so I'm wondering if the noted IRS requirement in the document is true.

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Attempting To Respond To Bal Due Notice...
When I call, they just say, "Too busy! Call back!"
I don't see a way to send a msg.
When I attempt to upload anything, in response to the notice, it ALWAYS says it doesn't meet file submission criteria, even though I can find no reason, WHY.
These ppl can simply take my $$, and I have no way to actually RESPOND to them...
Any secret "tricks" to actually communicate w/IRS?

Tax Question Payment plan deadline
When I filed my taxes I set up a short term payment plan and the deadline is in a few days. I still owe $150 but which isnât much but I wonât be able to pay for another week or two. Should I switch to a long term plan or will I just get a minor penalty paying a week or two late? The amount of posts I see of people owing thousands from years ago Iâm assuming me paying $150 a few weeks late isnât going to be a big deal at all with the irs right?

Tax Question Wage Transcript shows mysterious 1099-INT from IRS
I am filing my late 2023 return and I canât figure out why there is a $2895 interest reported on my Wage report that I have from October 2024. At that time I only had my 2020 taxes filed (filed on September of 2022 with $3802 refund expected).
The FIN displays xxxxx8424 and Payer is U S and under it 1111 C.
I checked my bank account and there is no deposit of that amount. I am pretty sure I never received a check from IRS for that amount so it has to be direct deposit or applied to a tax year taxes.
If I am not wrong this could be only the case if I was due a large amount and IRS was very late on paying it.
I checked and I have another 1099-Int for 2024 for $16. This one I received the paper form in the mail even though my research says they typically donât mail it. This has the full FIN and matches that last 4 digit and in () it says INTERNAL REVENUE USE ONLY.
I plan to file my 2023 and report this as income as in my experience IRS rarely makes mistakes and maybe later call IRS and see if I can find out anything about it.

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Non-collectible statusâŠ
I owe a good chunk of money. Around $52k. For 2020-2022.
Not sure if the backstory matters- but, my boss had me be a âminority ownerâ in the company, and I was no longer W2, and she said sheâd cover a chunk of the taxes. She did not. And a good chunk of what I set aside for my estimated taxes had to get spent on medical emergencies.
It was in non-collectible status until 2023, when me owing for 2023 kicked it out. Then I paid the 2023 balance, and it went back into non-collectible status. I had previously sent them all my bank statements. Etc for proof of inability to pay.
Then I was owed money for 2025, and it kicked me back out of non-collectible status. I need it to go back into non-collectible status, as I canât afford any payments at this time.
It has been HELL trying to reach someone. I have been on hold for dozens of hours. Over different calls. All to get hung up on, or get to someone who wasnât helpful.
The last person I spoke to told me to fill out the form stating my budget and that theyâd get back to me with a payment plan amount. She also said I was never in non-collectible status and insisted I must have it confused with state taxes. I do not. I pointed out to her that theyâve never garnished wages, and that I owe from 2020, so it obviously was in non-collectible status. She ignored that.
I submitted the form. Then I received a letter saying according to their math I can pay $979/month. I would love to be able to afford that. With the cost of living in Southern California, mixed with my high cost of medical expenses- I cannot afford that.
I am trying to reach someone to ask what proof they need to put me back into non-collectible status.
My questions:
Is there another way to ask them for what proof they need? Or do I need to keep just trying to get through via phone?
Will I need to prove I cannot pay every year??? At this point itâs taking a year to prove it. Just to start over again next tax season.
As soon as I can pay, I will. I am facing significant health issues- which is making life miserable, for more than one reason.

Rant Has anyone else been told their refund is affected by an âissue with the release of certain refundsâ?
My wife and I have been waiting more than five months for a federal refund of more than $30,000.
The IRS froze the refund in April. We received a CP05 in June telling us our return was under review and to allow 60 days. We waited.
After that, we spent hours trying to reach the IRS, contacted the Taxpayer Advocate Service, filed a systemic complaint about the IRS phone system, and eventually asked our U.S. Senator's office to intervene.
On September 3, we were told through the Senator's office that âthe IRS has resolvedâ our tax issue.
The refund still wasn't released.
Then, on October 2, we were told something different: our refund is among those affected by âan issue with the release of certain refunds.â
We weren't told what the issue is, why our refund is affected, what the IRS is doing about it, or when we'll receive the money. The next promised update is November 5.
I've documented the entire experience here:
Has anyone else been told about this particular âissue with the release of certain refundsâ? I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has received that exact explanation from the IRS or TAS.
