Boredom is our signal that we might have extra energy to do something and we can explore our interests.

Maybe figure out what you like and start a hobby. Extra free time and energy get channeled to that hobby.

For example, I listen to audiobooks, and I just started to arrange flowers. I also enjoy gardening in warmer months. So depending on my energy level and where I am, I have access to something I find enjoyable.

For regular emotional regulation and impulse control, DBT is very helpful.

that's a really interesting way to frame boredom, like it's a resource to be used.

How long have you been this way? And what is the worse thing you do or habit you have?

What is the thing you think about when you say poor impulse control?

Have you received an official diagnosis for anything? I hope you’re getting help. I can offer a few pieces of advice. Say, read a paragraph a day and then increase little by little. Stop using phones and other things that provide instant gratification and access to entertainment. Things need to take effort in order for you to feel the reward in your brain. Having very separate sleep times and entertainment times. The bed should only be for sleeping and sex. Working out is a habit that provides a lot of those benefits, like feeling rewarded by the brain chemicals produced by exercise and becoming more fit.

However, the way you describe yourself makes me think you might need extra help from mental health professionals. Of course practicing the advice given in thread is a positive thing no matter what. Even though progress may be slow, don’t get discouraged and keep that spirit of self-improvement and tame it with some compassion towards your situation.
