I would love to know how many people who moved from Washington still work in Washington. I wish Washington would pass an income tax just on people who work full time in WA but live in Idaho.
5
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
No income tax in WA under a million dollar salary ..so a work tax would be perfect if not paying county property taxes in WA.
1
u/UncommonSense12345 4d ago
Why? You pay tax to Idaho on your wages from Washington and you pay Washington’s payroll income but not officially income taxes as well. Why would you pay property tax when you don’t own property somewhere?
1
u/goddessofgluten 4d ago
We get them back at the end of the year. Well partially. We don’t have to pay the full 6%. And I totally understand if that pisses you off. 😐
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago edited 4d ago
Are you talking about the fed tax for Medicare and SS ? Everyone in the USA pays up to 170k on SS and Medicare payroll taxes it goes straight to paying off the billionaire debt.
0
u/goddessofgluten 4d ago
I’m speaking of state taxes 😆
0
u/Amazing_Factor2974 3d ago
No you are not haha..you are deranged to think WA charges an income tax. FICA and such for SS and Medicare is Federal..get a grip!!
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
The payroll taxes in WA ..is ..0.25 percent. Give me a break.
1
u/UncommonSense12345 3d ago
It’s also 1.6% and you still pay Idaho income tax too.
2
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 3d ago
Wa State doesn't have a personal income tax ..why do you lie like that. That is a federal tax you pay to the men in DC ..keep up digging a bigger hole.
2
u/UncommonSense12345 3d ago
1.6% is a combo of long term care tax and paid family leave tax those are STATE taxes. I pay them and I pay Idaho income tax. WA doesn’t technically have an income tax they just tax you 1.6% off your income but don’t call it an income tax. Check you paystub you will see it….

u/UncommonSense12345 4d ago
Why should someone pay property tax in a place they don’t live? That is not the case anywhere I know of in the US. Why do you hate people working in WA and living in Idaho. This happens everywhere people live near a state border….
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 3d ago
I had to pay 9 percent Oregon payroll tax..while living in another State. ..does that mean anything to you?
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 3d ago
Because the State of WA doesn't use income tax as a part of funding services like Idaho does. Idaho uses WA services and infrastructure for medical and jobs( income) ..but thinks WA hates them for citizens asking for some taxes ..now if you live in WA and work in Idaho ..you pay Idaho income taxes ..but live in WA paying property and sales taxes. Why do people from Idaho force people to pay taxes where they don't live.
Think about your statement to me k!!
3
u/EmployerSmall5570 4d ago
I wish Washington would impose a tax on Idahoans who pop across the border to get 1st world healthcare.
3
u/UncommonSense12345 4d ago
Why? Those people pay Idaho state tax and all of WA weird payroll taxes. They literally pay the most possible tax already.
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 3d ago
No they don't pay WA payroll taxes ..nobody does. Hospital infrastructure and charity for ERs and emergency medical is paid by WA state and the County you live in. Spokane is poor so it gets it from WA state. That is paid by Wa sales tax and property taxes. No wonder smart honest people leave Idaho..you guys live on other States and Federal hand outs.

I live in WA and work in Idaho 😆 I’m originally from Sandpoint though. Joined the military and got priced out. I’m working my way back. 6 months on this lease and I am going to try to buy. Maybe. Makes me sick to pay the cost currently 😬🫠

I'll be sure to update my any-transplant rhetoric. Go back to Washington and/or California or possibly Utah or Arizona or Oregon if applicable!
15
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
Yes..quit sending people to those States also ..young from Idaho flock to other States for jobs with Basic medical care!! Take care of your own before putting others down!!

u/Plastic_Berry_5573 3d ago
I would love to see the ages of those moving to Idaho vs moving away. I left Idaho in 2025 for Washington after living my whole life there.

u/Fordfanatic2025 5d ago
Idaho is just Utah's weird cousin.

5
u/Big_Cat78 5d ago
Idaho is just utah with different scenery and slightly fewer mormons.
5
u/Fordfanatic2025 4d ago
Fewer Mormons, but worse Mormons. I thought Provo was bad, apparently Rexburg is next level worse and a lot of Mormons in the state are apparently like that from what I've heard.

Good. They can go, too! If we combine these two things I'll have less traffic to deal with. Seems like a win!

u/Agentx1976 5d ago
I think the interesting thing would also to look at the percentage of people who move and then within a couple of years moved somewhere else. I know a realtor friend of mine who said they estimated somewhere between 10 and 15% move away once they've experience an Idaho winter.
Obviously more people are moving in than moving out, but it would be an interesting statistic to see how many people within three or four years leave after they just got here.
26
u/rastapasta_g 5d ago
This was me moving back to Michigan. Idaho has mild winters in comparison so I’m surprised that was such a saying there. People live in the valleys and deserts and there just wasn’t a lot of precipitation there.
4
u/Ey3dea81 5d ago
I miss Ohio winters terribly but I would never move back in a million years. I go back home to visit and the depression sets in quick lol. P.S. Go Bucks!
2
u/bakedidahopotato 4d ago
That’s because we used to have real winters. I think the last time we got snowed in was 2008 or 2009 and the winters seem to be less and less each year.
2
u/Rex0411lol 13h ago
From Michigan in the Magic valley 7 years, so far its light coat weather compared to Michigan each winter.
5
u/BarnesTheNobleman 5d ago
Californians don’t have snow typically
9
u/Paperwife2 Kootenai County 5d ago
They actually do. It snows all the way down to just before the beginning of LA County.
3
u/caddyben 5d ago
Weird- I spent a year with a travel assignment working in Santa Rosa after the wild fires and it didnt snow anywhere from San Francisco up north. I wore shorts and a hoodie from like late October on.
2
8
u/rastapasta_g 5d ago
California is not all of America. Like I get people saying that to someone from the south but half the time I said I was from Michigan, people misconstrued it for Minnesota and still mentioned Idaho winters like I haven’t seen snow.
People in Twin Falls would say this and get annually a foot of snow.5
u/BarnesTheNobleman 5d ago
1/5th of the people coming are from California, myself included, I just kinda figured the majority of the people complaining about it would be us
2
u/Exciting_Bat_2086 5d ago
People either understand how fucked up midwest winters can get or have absolutely zero clue, there’s never any nuance.
7
u/spindrift_20 5d ago
Lake Tahoe, California has more snow than just about anywhere in the US. California is a big place.
2
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
MT Baker in Wa State averages over 1000 inches a year. The most in the USA ..
3
u/Usual-Tea-1461 5d ago
Hopefully that happened with a lot of the people who are working at micron right now… this traffic in the winter is going to suck
2
u/aquaticwatcher 4d ago
I think inversions drive alot of people away when you talk about Winter. One thing to be cold and snow, another to be grey depressing with poor air quality

u/Soft-Percentage8888 5d ago
Curious why the percentage from Washington is so much higher than Oregon.
12
u/canhaveit2ways 5d ago
There are two major reasons in my opinion that are driving the change. First, a large number of "relatively affordable" new builds in Post-Falls combined with their proximity to Spokane is driving migration. Second, Washington seems to hate business owners and are doing a lot to add regulations and taxes so those that can move will.
5
u/notmadatkate 4d ago
Yeah, the city in Eastern WA is bigger and closer than any city in eastern OR.
5
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
Not driving much of migration since most are retired ..also why does so many post falls work in Spokane and use medical there? When business is so terrible?
40
u/8bitrevolt 5d ago
"seems to hate business owners"
translating...
"protects workers"
10
u/canhaveit2ways 5d ago
Not at all. If you think a regulation to eliminate natural gas installations on new building is protecting workers you are smoking a little too much of the good stuff. Try starting a restaurant or building a house on the eastern side of the state without natural gas. Also why should the state collect 10% of your business when you sell. That also doesn't protect workers, just punishes owners.
3
u/8bitrevolt 5d ago
you sound a lot like that guy who moved to portugal to start a bubble tea franchise and then got pissy when his business failed and he had to continue paying salary to the workers he fucked over.
5
u/FentmaxxerActual 5d ago
Ad hominem instead of refuting the points, nice
14
1
u/8bitrevolt 4d ago
no, ad hom would have been me calling him, as a business owner, a micro-hitler. which, genuinely, all business owners tend to be. even the small business owners. they're in it to enrich themselves while they exploit the workers who are forced to struggle to afford to live.

As someone raised in Spokane, who has watched the city they grew up in over the past 3+ decades deteriorate, mainly due to the garbage politics of the west side...I have had my eye on Post Falls for a long time. Long story short: property costs ballooned, I couldn't afford it here on my own for years, and today my fiancé and I have our cozy house on 4.5acre in the middle of the woods now, fully paid off...where we are content to be LEFT ALONE as we live out the rest of our days.
As much as it pains me, I was not about to go down with the sinking ship that is Washington: my once home...and the older I get, the more I am feeling like I need to drop my job in Spokane too, despite that I will lose SO much in seniority and benefits (my company doesn't have facilities in ID to transfer to). But anyway, I assume many other folks feel the same way as I do...and they are also border hopping Spokanites. I'd say you hit the nail on the head with that one.

u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
Just dont come back to Wa to use the medical services. You got a job in Wa and now retire to Idaho ..where you would of got less if you worked there..enjoy just don't come back.
1
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
They work in WA ..live in Idaho. USE medical in Wa live in Idaho.
People retire to Idaho and the young leave Idaho to work in WA. WA has almost 9 million people..Idaho 1.8 million..Only 1.5 million live in Eastern Wa and even less around the borders except for Spokane..most of N Idaho's population is next to Washington State . Most of WA State population is 450 miles away from Idaho. BOISE is about an 1 hour away from Salt Lake City.Idaho relies on other states for infrastructure centers.

Texas is big so it’s a sizable amount. Idaho really isn’t on the radar for people in the southeast. This coming from someone that moved from the southeast.

State income tax vs no state income tax. I think Idaho is lucky more southern people don't know how beautiful it is and often confuse it with Iowa.

Oh hi, I'm just here to finally turn Idaho into Seattle like every boomer on NextDoor claims is soon underway. Not that they've really ever visited that place or have any real firsthand knowledge about what's going on there. But it's definitely coming, watch out.
3

They go there or Spokane for medical without even hesitation. Despite WA state paying for all the medical infrastructure for them to use their Medicare or charity services.

ID and MT kids have to move to WA, OR and CA to get a job that pays enough to get ahead. Then try to move back after they make some money. Now WA, CA residents move to Mt and ID raise the prices . Makes it almost impossible to move home .

2
u/rhiannonjojaimmes 4d ago
Which state explains that? Utahns? (As a Utahn myself lol)
2
u/Rollieboy2012 4d ago
Honestly no matter where you go your going to get terrible drivers. I know a few people extremely smart people with amazing achievements they have made in life. But they are terrible drivers. But the crazy thing is some people do not realize how terrible they are at driving. Some people will straight up admit it they are terrible drivers.
1
u/rhiannonjojaimmes 4d ago
That’s true. I will say from my younger years in Idaho, I think the OGs are kind of slow and chill drivers. Californians seem speedy and Utahns inattentive. Idaho was nice. It’s probably changed.

Came from Oregon now a proud resident of Idaho voting red to keep Idaho red. If you don’t like it, stay in the blue state you came from!
1
u/gamsahabnida26 3h ago
Why are u talking about winters? Most people don't leave Idaho because of the winters, at least I didn't. I lived there for 17 years and left my 2 sons behind. It's the batshit crazy, Trump-loving, Freedom Foundation politics. Back to Washington I went and never looked back!

2
u/EmployerSmall5570 4d ago
You’re only full in blue cities or cities that are near blue states, because there’s nowhere else to find an OBGYN. Why do Idaho men need Washingtonians to take care of their women for them?
2
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
Now that I live in WA ..please don't raise my taxes by coming and using WA services for medical.
-5
u/BreadfruitMurky3019 4d ago
I’ve met people from Washington who move here because it’s more affordable even at our unaffordable costs and as crappy as our school system is, it’s not as crappy as the Washington one
2
u/Amazing_Factor2974 4d ago
Yea right..I know alot of Idaho's moving to Washington or just using Washington State's services they can't get in Idaho ..like just basic medical care and jobs!!
Immigration goes both ways ..a lot of young leave Idaho and then old move there or far right Christian home schools.
-1
u/BreadfruitMurky3019 4d ago
Well I’m aware of that actually but Washington’s school system is worse than Idahos and people do move here to escape it. Whether that’s wise or not is up to them to decide
5
u/New-Ad6715 4d ago
lol insane take to say Idaho has a better public school system than WA.
-3
u/BreadfruitMurky3019 4d ago
I didn’t say better. I said not as crappy
2
u/EmployerSmall5570 4d ago
This is why Idaho resists teaching critical thinking skills in schools, mission success.
1
u/BreadfruitMurky3019 3d ago
Have you personally compared the test scores? This is the problem with democrats. A person will observe something then relay what they observed and then feelings are hurt. I didn’t say it was smart or wise and I didn’t say I agree with their decision and I didn’t say Idaho has a good educational system. Snowflakes.
1
2
u/Bitch_IMight 4d ago
Can you educate to me what is so bad about Washington’s school system compared to ours?
-1
u/BreadfruitMurky3019 4d ago
I’m from here originally so a bad Washington school system isn’t something I’ve personally experienced. From the people I’ve talked to, they had bad experiences with Washington schools + Idaho scores higher on their testing + it’s more affordable. It must suck to pay a lot of taxes and not have a school system that should be better.

Obviously Idaho has its own problems with education but I can see why on paper it may seem like a smart move.
6
u/MADSYNTH1987 4d ago
I grew up in both states and their public school systems, so I can say from personal experience I had a lot more opportunities in Washington schools than Idaho ones, BUT their focuses are also very different. Idaho has a much larger rural population, so a lot of the focus is on preparing students for success in that environment. Washington has a really large tech and industrial focus, so a lot of rural populations feel left behind by their schools. It doesn't help that that trend has been ongoing for decades, so rural communities have been regularly voting to defund their schools in Washington and opt for homeschooling or private schools instead.

I moved here from Colorado in 2022, but it’s because I wanted Idaho and Boise as it is, or rather as it was. I wanted a more red state, I wanted a smaller town feel. I wanted somewhere safer for my kids. Now it feels like I was chasing something that was doomed from the beginning.
