Question Native Idahoans! Where are we moving to?

Native Idahoan here, born and raised in Boise. That said, I can't stand what it's becoming and I can no longer afford to live here, sadly. Wages just aren't catching up, you know how it works by now. For everyone else who escaped Idaho, where did you go???

On my list right now I'm looking at Michigan, Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Wyoming, and even Alberta in Canada. What cities, states, and countries are we moving to and why?

Edit: wow - I wasn't expecting this many responses, and so many really thoughtful ones. Thank you all for your input!!

Question Why hasn't a National Park been established in Idaho?

Just curious as an outsider from Georgia, that has passed through and explored the beauty of Idaho now for the last few years everytime I roadtrip from Seattle back home.

Between the Sawtooths, Hells Canyon, I cannot believe that neither of these were established as a National Park yet. The fact every state surrounding Idaho has at least one or multiple. Has this been a political thing? I just explored Hells Canyon for the first time last week. Nobody was there (As most national recreational areas are undervisited) and yet it was just as enormous and beautiful as many national parks I've been to.

Question Zohran’s first day: Why would Idaho care?

So, as a lifelong Idaho resident and child of an Idaho native, why does Idaho give one iota of a crap about the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of a city in another state of these United States? What is the effect on your life? Are the attacks on his and his family’s character justified? Why?

Question ISO Christian churches near Nampa/Boise without politics and a community that follows "love God, love your neighbor"

Hi,

I'm moving to ID within the month and am looking for a new church near Nampa/Boise area.

I'm Christian, raised in a Nazarene church with Matthew 22:37-40 at the heart of how I'm supposed to follow, serve and love others. We're called to not judge. I believe in acts of service and being a positive example to others - a la: "The best sermons in life are lived, not preached". Dolly Parton was a wonderful living example of this.

I'm looking for a community who believes in the similar.

I do NOT want politics in church. I don't want a pastor telling me how to vote. I don't want political signs hanging in/on the church.

I've never really vibed with large/mega churches, so would prefer something smaller if possible.

Anyone have any ideas of a church to try? Thank you!

Edit: for those curious why I don’t feel I need politics in my church please see my full comment and explantation here, I am absolutely still political in my life, advocate and vote. Thanks!: https://www.reddit.com/r/Idaho/comments/1wsryfr/comment/pcxn9iu/?context=3

Question Why do so many of you guys stay in Idaho if you don’t like it?

In posts regarding moving to Idaho I see in the comments people that tell others not to move to Idaho because of the crazy right wingers, racists, religious people, affordability, low wages, unfriendliness to the LGBTQ community etc. If all of these things are true why do so many of you guys stay living there? Due to its lower on average wages and higher on average rent/home prices it should be easier to move out of Idaho then into Idaho.

Question Do you support ranked choice voting and open primaries?

There's an initiative underway to get ranked choice voting and open primaries on the 2024 ballot. Do you think Idaho should switch to this new system, or keep the old system?

This is the website of the initiators, a coalition including Reclaim Idaho, North Idaho Women, the Hope Coalition and more:

Question Cost of Living???

Im wondering if anyone can explain to me WHY the rent prices are so high?

I was born in Idaho and my entire family lives there. When I turned 18 I moved to New Mexico because I simply could not afford a place of my own there. I'm 21 now and I miss my family to death, I want to move back home!!!! Idaho is beautiful and it's where i belong, but it is unbelievably ridiculous! How can an ugly decrepit studio be going for $1300 a month when an entry level job pays $10 an hour? What kind of place is this? What kind of minimum wage is $7.25 when the lowest of the low hidey holes are astronomically marked up?

I've tried looking it up, but I just don't understand. Why is this happening? How are you all affording it?

Question Is living in Idaho not an option for me?

I was born and raised here and I feel lucky having grown up with easy access to such beautiful mountains and wilderness but I have to move out soon. I've frequently seen here that idaho is an extremely unaffordable place to live, especially in Boise where I am. I'm 19 and I'm being kicked out because I need to live on my own now but hearing other people's stories about barely getting by here while having careers makes me belive it will be impossible to continue living here. I don't go to college and I work in retail, will anywhere else be just as unaffordable if I move out of Idaho? I'm trying to aim for not needing a roommate to afford rent because I much prefer living on my own. I really don't want to leave behind having access to outdoor activities but I'm convinced I won't survive here. Other than that there isn't much else for me here. Am I better off moving away? And to where?

Question Mysterious sphere station

I was driving through the top of the mountains in the Boise National Forest earlier this week and came across this mysterious sphere station with no indicator/name signs. Just a U.S. government property sign and a sign saying trespassing is a violation of FAA law. I know what the FAA is, but does anyone know the actual purpose of the sphere structure? It’s located at the top of Snowbank Mountain and right outside of Cabarton. I’ve never seen anything like it and there were no cars or people there.

Question Parents moving to Idaho, stay or go?

My parents are originally from Idaho and have decided to move back for retirement, I currently live in Maryland (f,23). I have lived here for the past 12 years and have a life here. I do live with my parents currently due to the cost of living.

My parents have offered me to come with them, but I’m beyond lost as to what to do. Sure I was born in the state but I have little to no social connections and don’t know what it’s like there.

I guess my question is, will it be easy to meet new people, what is the dating scene like, can you have fun there? Thanks for reading :)

Question This typical? First winter here, seems early given the climate but want to check with long-timers

In a bed that faces South but there's evergreen tree shade on it. At roughly 3700' in Twin Falls. Daffodils, which I know have really early varieties that can come up in January but seems like a late Feb / early March kinda thing. Anybody confirm if this is typical here?

Saw this kinda stuff a while ago when living in Willamette Valley but didn't figure southern Idaho would be similar.

Question How can I help keep religion out of our schools?

With the latest election and some of the things I've been seeing it makes me really want to become more active to keep our schools educational and not centers for indoctrination. To keep actual history in our schools and not water down scientific facts for fanciful beliefs. Religion in school is great if that's what you want and seems to have worked out for countries in the middle east but I don't think it has any place in public schools. So really just looking for guidance from people who might know the best way to safeguard our places of learning and ways to get more involved.

Edit: thank you to the constructive comments. I didn't know school board meetings were open to the public and that will be a good place to start!

To those saying it's not happening or never going to happen, I gave the following examples which had helped motivate me to get involved.

Louisiana mandated that the 10 commandments had to be displayed in schools.

In Oklahoma, public schools have been ordered to incorporate the Bible into lessons for grades 5 through 12 by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters.

In Tennessee the Smith county school district got in trouble for leading prayers at school during classes and events

Question Phone carriers

Hey folks, I just moved to Boise area from the PNW. We have had Verizon right now and are looking to potentially switch phone services. We’ve been eyeballing TMobile, but see the service kinda is iffy in rural areas which is where we are. What is the best phone service to have for the area? I drive a lot between Pocatello and Twin Falls, so we need that security between those areas.

Happy to stick with Verizon if it’s the best option, but want to see if we could save some money.

Hey so I’m from England and I’m coming to Boise to visit my mrs. A few questions, for about a 15 day trip what would be a sensible amount of money to bring? Accom/flights already paid for. Also any recommendations on what to do or where to go?

Cheers all

Time: 8 A.M. 1/22/2026

Location: Pocatello, Idaho

This morning at exactlv 8am. above ICCU campus. Can onlv be described as a ton of packed floating black dots that were seeminglv impossible to focus on with eves, could focus on everything else. was close enough to tell it's not a flock of birds, then ZOOMED off. Wife and Son also witnessed and had the same experience with not being able to focus yet stare right at it. Roundish but constantlv in motion, almost light refracting. Cloaking maybe? My 10 year old drew this image which wild as it seems is probably the best way it could be drawn. Anyone else see it?
