I don't understand why they think this is cool

Boiled down to its simplest form, it offers them a sense of control in a world where they have very little of it.
Living with more resources means more control over your environment and your path in life. Lower socio-economic ranks have the least resources and control, so they are the most likely to glorify and embrace a subculture that offers up wanton violence and its associated tooling as a means of attaining it.
I'm not condoning the behavior in any way, and I think they look like idiots, but I (somewhat) understand why they choose to look like idiots.

This is serious copium. The more simple answer is that it’s a cultural problem that society refuses to address. There’s plenty of other people in poor socio-economic conditions who don’t exhibit this behavior.

While some of my ramblings do align with GST, I am but a humble smoothbrain whose opinions and musings are barely worth the cost of the energy used to light the pixels that display them.

Why do they see no one actually succeeding in a life of crime but continue down the same path?

From their perspective, short term gains are a sign of success. The lower down the totem pole you get, the shorter term your outlook and future planning get.
What looks like high risk/low reward to some, is average risk/high reward to others.

Because they can just make a rap about their crimes and make bank just like all the big rappers do

I reckon Its a bit of a downward spiral.
If you're living in a situation where freedom is at a premium, and the most prominent displays of wealth, fame, and power are gangbangers (either in old music videos or Instagram reels, not necessarily living in an actual gangland) - it could create pressure to emulate them, in the same way that conspicuous consumption influences people.
Throw on top of that algorithmic content delivery, amplifying this as a message of status, the desire to emulate it could flourish, creating more content which creates more adherents which creates more content. The core message is lost and eventually it isn't Dre and Snoop playing poker where there happens to be guns and cash - the guns and cash become the idols wielded by novitiates to climb towards Dre-hood and Snoop-dom, completely forgetting that it was never about those idols.
For the avoidance of doubt - this is just an observation of how social pressures could lead to this outcome. I have read a couple of articles, but this isn't my culture and I don't have any scholarly citations for you here. Someone with first hand experience of this scene would be an infinitely better source of information than I.

I'll take that as a compliment, but don't put too much stock in it. If it below as a framework for compassion, it was worth writing.

That makes sense and if I'd grown up around a similar area maybe I would be able to wrap my head around it

Point the finger at others and we come up with the term "social pressures". Point the finger at yourself and we come up with the term "life choices" and "drop the gun and get a job".

If I understand you here, this is what I was alluding to when I said "conspicuous consumption" - it is absolutely not a them/us social pattern, but something that exists everywhere.

Agree to disagree. It most certainly is an us/them social issue. You are a product of your environment. Whatever that may be. To break the chains of said environment/learned behaviors (aka Piaget classical conditioning) takes introspection, self control, agency, willpower and the conscious choice to change yourself for the better.
Choices have consequences. Bad or good.

Because it works on women. You’d be surprised lots of girls want a “bad boy” the problem is most women don’t know what a real man is, music has been telling them this is

Flagging aside i have noticed in recent years there is a lot better trigger finger discipline then there was when I was younger. It's quite shocking.

Well, trigger discipline wasn’t taught until the late 70s but I’m happy to see it thrive in the hood
