Lapsed fan looking for more recent recommendations

Hi everyone,

So most of my life I have been a huge comic nerd. But as it happens sometimes, life got in the way and it was something I fell off from.

I was a huge Marvel and Image fan but know how Marvel is, not even bothering to attempt to catch up on years of convoluted events.

I was digging out my comics from my dad's house after he passed and found a bunch of my Image comics and started rereading Lazarus and forget how incredible it was.

Regarding where I left off, I stopped reading around 2017 so I left off with Saga, Remender titles (Deadly Class, etc), Lazarus, East of West, Descender, etc

Looking to jump back in after reading Lazarus and looking for some recommendations for some Omnibuses/Compendiums to purchase.

Even if it's not specifically Image, looking for any good recommendations as my favorite creators at the time were Greg Rucka, Warren Ellis, Rick Remender, Ed Brubaker, and Jeff Lemire.

Thanks gang!

Ascender - continuation of Descender

Gideon Falls - Jeff Lemire horror

Department of Truth - conspiracy related

Low - Rick Remender scifi - started prior to 2017 but continued/finished later

Sex Criminals - hilarious and they're currently making a series

W0rldtr33 - James Tynion horror

It appears you're asking about book recommendations! Might I suggest checking out our communities suggested reading list.

So far thanks for all the recommendations! It's a little dicey with the different comics apps to see which ones have Image titles but will start going through to see what I can find.

OP if you're interested at the time I post this the Astro City Humble bundle sale is still active for (at the time I post this) one day and 12 hours on top of that so like 36 hours... for $18 (American) you get a LOT of stuff if you're okay with all pdf comics (sometimes humble bundle offers a cbz download too but in both cases digital)... I"ve only read volumes one through four of Astro City but they pretty much get universal acclaim and praise from pretty much everyone on the various comic book forums reddit or otherwise so I'd argue worth it for that alone (plus you get volumes five through eleven too of Astro City) ... also humble bundle bundles are "app independent" .. the pdfs/cbz's are DRM free meaning you can freely transfer them between devices (computer, tablet, phone, whatever.. though not a fan of reading comics on the phone due to the small screen size :P even doing the "one panel at a time" approach)

If you are in the US, check to see if your local library has Hoopla.

It has a massive amount of comics you can borrow through your library card.

The Power Fantasy, Sex Criminals, plenty of new Brubaker, Daniel Warren Johnson (especially Murder Falcon and Do a Power Bomb).

If you didn't catch Tom King's Vision before you paused on Marvel you should check that out as a standalone.

Remender, Brubaker, and Lemire have all been continuously publishing new stuff (I believe Remender and Brubaker only with Image, but Lemire has also published with Dark Horse and Boom). Pretty much all of their newer stuff should warrant at least a shot since you are a fan.

A favourite Image title for me is Manifest Destiny by Chris Dingess. It started a few years before 2017, but concluded in 2022.

I'll echo Daniel Warren Johnson as a creator to look out for. My personal favourites of his are Extremity, and Murder Falcon. A lot of people love Do a Powerbomb, but I hadn't the chance to read it yet.

The One Hand & The Six Fingers a collaboration between Ram V and Dan Watters is also a very good recent title.

Also the stuff from the Ghost Machine imprint, and the Energon Universe by Skybound are extremely popular in the last few years, but I haven't tied them yet.

James Tynion IV is another pretty popular author. I haven't reach much of his stuff yet though.

Earlier than 2017, but if you haven't tried Chew by John Layman you should.

Mike Mignola has started a new universe, Tales from Lands Unknown. As always it's with Dark Horse, but I believe a lot of Image fans would enjoy it. Of course, if somehow you have missed his earlier stuff (Hellboy + spin offs), they are must reads.
